The international geomagnetic reference field 1965.0 in dipole coordinates
Computer program for transforming spherical harmonic coefficients to geomagnetic dipole coordinate
Quantitative magnetospheric models derived from spacecraft magnetometer data
Quantitative models of the external magnetospheric field were derived by making least-squares fits to magnetic field measurements from four IMP satellites. The data were fit to a power series expansion in the solar magnetic coordinates and the solar wind-dipole tilt angle, and thus the models contain the effects of seasonal north-south asymmetries. The expansions are divergence-free, but unlike the usual scalar potential expansions, the models contain a nonzero curl representing currents distributed within the magnetosphere. Characteristics of four models are presented, representing different degrees of magnetic disturbance as determined by the range of Kp values. The latitude at the earth separating open polar cap field lines from field lines closing on the dayside is about 5 deg lower than that determined by previous theoretically-derived models. At times of high Kp, additional high latitude field lines are drawn back into the tail
Jupiter's radiation belts: Can Pioneer 10 survive?
Model calculations of Jupiter's electron and proton radiation belts indicate that the Galilean satellites can reduce particle fluxes in certain regions of the inner magnetosphere by as much as six orders of magnitude. Average fluxes should be reduced by a factor of 100 or more along the Pioneer 10 trajectory through the heart of Jupiter's radiation belts in early December. This may be enough to prevent serious radiation damage to the spacecraft
Absorption of trapped particles by Jupiter's moons
Absorption effects of the four innermost moons in the radial transport equations for electrons and protons in Jupiter's magnetosphere are presented. The phase space density n at 2 R sub J for electrons with equatorial pitch angles less than 69 deg is reduced by a factor of 4.2 x 1000 when lunar absorption is included in the calculation. For protons with equatorial pitch angles less than 69 deg, the corresponding reduction factor is 3.2 x 100000. The effect of the satellites becomes progressively weaker for both electrons and protons as equatorial pitch angles of pi/2 are approached, because the likelihood of impacting a satellite becomes progressively smaller. The large density decreases which we find at the orbits of Io, Europa, and Ganymede result in corresponding particle flux decreases that should be observed by spacecraft making particle measurements in Jupiter's magnetosphere. The characteristic signature of satellite absorption should be a downward pointing cusp in the flux versus radius curve at the L-value corresponding to each satellite
The utility of surface magnetic field measurements in the MAGSAT program
To take full advantage of the global, vector, survey by the Magsat satellite, and international program of augmented surface measurements was proposed. For secular variation and upper mantle conductivity the proposed measurements are global. The repeat station measurements for secular variation should be occupied at 2-3 year intervals. A special observing period in November and December of 1979 is proposed during which simultaneous, continuous, global measurements for upper mantle conductivity studies are to be gathered. Finally, it is recommended that the networks in operation during the IMS extend their operation through the Fall of 1980 to provide correlative data useful for high latitude disturbance studies and for crustal conductivity studies
Geometric field-line calculations
Procedure for calculating three components of vector field from spherical harmonic using either geocentric or geodetic coordinates as input and output is described. Three subroutines of computer program are explained. Program is written in FORTRAN for IBM 360 computer
The Born-Oppenheimer Approach to the Matter-Gravity System and Unitarity
The Born-Oppenheimer approach to the matter-gravity system is illustrated and
the unitary evolution for matter, in the absence of phenomena such as
tunnelling or other instabilities, verified. The Born-Oppenheimer approach to
the matter-gravity system is illustrated in a simple minisuperspace model and
the corrections to quantum field theory on a semiclassical background
exhibited. Within such a context the unitary evolution for matter, in the
absence of phenomena such as tunnelling or other instabilities, is verified and
compared with the results of other approaches. Lastly the simplifications
associated with the use of adiabatic invariants to obtain the solution of the
explicitly time dependent evolution equation for matter are evidenced.Comment: Latex, 12 pages. Revised version as accepted for publication by

Initial geomagnetic field model from MAGSAT
Magsat data from magnetically quiet days were used to derive a thirteenth degree and order spherical harmonic geomagnetic field model, MGST(3/80). The model utilized both scalar and vector data and fit that data with standard deviations of 8, 52, 55 and 97 nT for the scalar magnitude, B sub r, B sub theta and B sub phi respectively. When compared with earlier models, the Earth's dipole moment continues to decrease at a rate of about 26 nT/year. Evaluation of earlier models with Magsat data shows that the scalar field at the Magsat epoch is best predicted by the POGO(2/72) model but that the AWC/75 and IGS/75 are better for predicting vector fields
DFR Perturbative Quantum Field theory on Quantum Space Time, and Wick Reduction
We discuss the perturbative approach a` la Dyson to a quantum field theory
with nonlocal self-interaction :phi*...*phi:, according to Doplicher,
Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR). In particular, we show that the Wick reduction
of non locally time--ordered products of Wick monomials can be performed as
usual, and we discuss a very simple Dyson diagram.Comment: 15 pages, pdf has active hyperlinks. To appear in the proceedings of
