Low-speed single-element airfoil synthesis

The use of recently developed airfoil analysis/design computational tools to clarify, enrich and extend the existing experimental data base on low-speed, single element airfoils is demonstrated. A discussion of the problem of tailoring an airfoil for a specific application at its appropriate Reynolds number is presented. This problem is approached by use of inverse (or synthesis) techniques, wherein a desirable set of boundary layer characteristics, performance objectives, and constraints are specified, which then leads to derivation of a corresponding viscous flow pressure distribution. Examples are presented which demonstrate the synthesis approach, following presentation of some historical information and background data which motivate the basic synthesis process

A brief examination of the performance figures achieved by modern soaring machines and a little reflection on the often huge disparity in L/D values between sailplanes and GA aircraft indicates that careful attention to lessons learned in sailplane design and manufacture hold realistic promise for substantial gains in the aerodynamic efficiency of several GA types

Medical Music: Anthropological Perspectives on Music Therapy

Music-based healing is utilized as a healing tool in many cultural contexts around the world. This thesis examines the cultural practice of music therapy in the context of the larger discipline of medicine in the United States through an ethnographic study of music therapists in the Greater Atlanta area. It contextualizes this data with research in medical ethnomusicology that explores cross-cultural traditions of music in healing rituals. It also connects music therapy to the observation that forces of globalization are strongly correlated with an increase in rates of inequality, poverty, stress, and disease. This thesis discusses how Atlanta-area music therapists use music healing with patients suffering from physical and mental disease and how economic stratification impacts access to music therapy. It is concerned with deeper and not immediately evident processes taking place in music therapy, such as the role of music as a medium and facilitator in healing

Effective Strategies for Preventing Recidivism Among Juveniles

This paper will discuss recidivism among juveniles, primarily aged 12 -18 years old, and evaluate which methods best prevent recidivism. I will begin with the multiple nationwide definitions of recidivism and which is most appropriate for this thesis, before moving on to explore the different methods and programs used by juvenile probation officers. This paper will discuss programs such as Scared Straight and anger reduction groups and their effect on reducing recidivism rates. Restorative justice will also be examined and whether or not the emphasis should be placed on rehabilitation or punishment in the field of juvenile justice. I will also be examining the effectiveness of practices in the juvenile department such as risk assessments and EPICS, which is Effective Practices in Community Supervision. Ultimately, I hope to produce a research paper that shows rehabilitation, rather than punishment, is more productive in reducing juvenile recidivism than severe punishment
