    Expressions, Looks and Others' Minds

We can know some things about each others' mental lives. The view that some of this knowledge is genuinely perceptual is getting traction. But the idea that we can see any of each others' mental states themselves - the Simple Perceptual Hypothesis - remains unpopular. Very often the view that we can perceptually know, for example, that James is angry, is thought to depend either on our awareness of James' expression or on the way James appears - versions of what I call the Expressive Hypothesis. The Expressive Hypothesis is intuitive. But in this chapter I argue that it does not allow us to do away with the thought that we sometimes perceive people's mental states. I take my arguments to provide some tentative support for the Simple Perceptual Hypothesis

Development of longitudinal handling qualities criteria for large advanced supersonic aircraft

    Get PDF
A piloted simulation study was conducted with the aim of advancing the development of longitudinal handling qualities criteria for large supersonic cruise aircraft. The areas of study investigated included high-speed cruise maneuvering, and stall-recovery control power. Comparisons were made with existing criteria and, for the cruise condition, a time response criterion was developed which correlated well with pilot ratings and comments. For low-speed stall recovery a new criterion was developed in terms of nose-down angular acceleration capability

Perception of graininess in complex photographic images through objective and subjective comparison

    Get PDF
A model previously used for the perception of graininess in uniform-density images that exist in electrophotography, has been verified for use in silver-halide photography. In addition, a model has been developed which estimates the sensation of graininess in photographic images of non -uniform density. Given the relationship between graininess and density in uniform-density images, the graininess in a complex image is weighted by the frequency of occurrence of each measured density in the image. Such an analysis is compared to subjective evaluations. It is shown that the graininess model is useful in predicting the sensation of graininess in photographs

    In-Situ Measurements of Pore Pressures

    Get PDF
As engineering moves into deeper waters, measurements of soil properties in the laboratory may be highly suspect if the soils are gassy. Strength and pore-pressure data are presented and discussed. A suggestion is made for development of pore-pressure gauges to detect the presence of clathrates

The Public Health Crisis of Law Enforcement’s Over-Use of Force

    Get PDF
The overuse of police force has public health implications. The rates of injury and death sustained while in law enforcement custody should be collected as a part of the public health strategy to minimize the over-use of force
