How ‘literate’ are young people when it comes to getting their news on social media? Niklas McKerrell is a sixth-form student who attended a recent Polis workshop with Facebook looking at ‘news literacy’. Here are his views on how his generation is coping with ‘fake news’ and the struggle to find reliable information online

Studies of a Rat Liver Ribonuclease Inhibitor Protein Gene

The cytoplasmic ribonuclease inhibitor-ribonuclease system has been detected in a wide variety of tissues and species and is thought to play an essential role in the regulation of RNA metabolism and hence protein synthesis. This hypothesis is based on the observation that tissues with high levels of RNA and protein synthesis are associated with correspondingly high levels of free inhibitor and vice versa. However, the precise nature of this regulatory function is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this project was to isolate cDNA clones of ribonuclease inhibitor from a rat liver library in the expression vector, lgt11 using polyclonal antiserum, to characterise the resultant clones and to use the clones to determine the extent to which ribonuclease inhibitor activities are controlled at the level of gene expression

On the relationship between performance and intangible cultural heritage

This chapter deliberately ranges across disciplines because we wish to move towards a better understanding of the notion of performance in relation to ICH, where both terms are inherently transdisciplinary. We fi rst examine the concept of performance as it is understood in Theatre and Performance Studies, focussing on those aspects which are pertinent to ICH – embodiment, liminality and effi cacy. Second, we turn to Heritage Studies and outline how ideas of and about performance shape our understanding of heritage and its sociocultural dimensions. Thirdly, and fi nally, we investigate aspects of the tension between the performance of and the research on ICH through the lens of ethnomusicology, a discipline that is shaped by the tensions between the wealth of tacit cultural knowledge acquired by learning to perform works of ICH and the need to communicate such knowledge in research outputs
