High-latitude artificial aurora using the EISCAT high-gain HF facility
The EISCAT high-frequency (HF) transmitter facility at Ramfjord, Norway, has been used to accelerate F-region electrons sufficiently to excite the oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules, resulting in optical emissions at 630, 557.7 and 427.8 nm. During O-mode transmissions at 5.423 MHz, using 630 MW effective radiated power, in the hours after sunset on 12 November 2001 several new observations were made, including: (1) The first high-latitude observation of an HF induced optical emission at 427.8 nm and (2) Optical rings being formed at HF on followed by their collapse into a central blob. Both discoveries remain unexplained with current theories
A cosmological model in Weyl-Cartan spacetime
We present a cosmological model for early stages of the universe on the basis
of a Weyl-Cartan spacetime. In this model, torsion and
nonmetricity are proportional to the vacuum polarization.
Extending earlier work of one of us (RT), we discuss the behavior of the cosmic
scale factor and the Weyl 1-form in detail. We show how our model fits into the

Let's talk about varying G
It is possible that fundamental constants may not be constant at all. There
is a generally accepted view that one can only talk about variations of
dimensionless quantities, such as the fine structure constant . However, constraints on the strength of
gravity tend to focus on G itself, which is problematic. We stress that G needs
to be multiplied by the square of a mass, and hence, for example, one should be
constraining , where is
the proton mass. Failure to focus on such dimensionless quantities makes it
difficult to interpret the physical dependence of constraints on the variation
of G in many published studies. A thought experiment involving talking to
observers in another universe about the values of physical constants may be
useful for distinguishing what is genuinely measurable from what is merely part

Improvements in Mass Spectrometers for the Measurement of Small Differences in Isotope Abundance Ratios
A Nier-type mass spectrometer and its associated electronic units have been constructed for the purpose of measuring small variations in the abundances of oxygen of mass 18 and of carbon of mass 13 in carbon dioxide, and of oxygen of mass 18 in oxygen gas, to an accuracy of ±0.01 percent of the abundance of these isotopes.The electronic units of the necessary stability for this degree of accuracy are described. A gas feed system is described which permits fast alternate introduction of the sample of gas to be analyzed and a standard gas into the mass spectrometer. Cosmological Models with Shear and Rotation
Cosmological models involving shear and rotation are considered, first in the
General Relat ivistic and then in the Newtonian framework with the aim of
investigating singularities in them by using numerical and analytical
techniques. The dynamics of these rotating models ar e studied. It is shown
that singularities are unavoidable in such models and that the centr ifugal
force arising due to rotation can never overcome the gravitational and shearing

The Clusters AgeS Experiment (CASE). II. The Eclipsing Blue Straggler OGLEGC-228 in the Globular Cluster 47 Tuc
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary
OGLEGC-228 (V228) to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the
component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, proper motion and
distance, the system is a blue straggler member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc.
Our analysis shows that V228 is a semi-detached Algol. We obtain M=1.512 +/-
0.022 Msun, R=1.357 +/- 0.019 Rsun, L=7.02 +/- 0.050 Lsun for the hotter and
more luminous primary component and M=0.200 +/- 0.007 Msun, R=1.238 +/- 0.013

On the diurnal variability in F2-region plasma density above the EISCAT Svalbard radar
Two long runs of EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR), in February 2001 and October 2002, have been analysed with respect to variability in the F2 region peak density and altitude. The diurnal variation in the F2 peak density exhibits one maximum around 12:00 MLT and another around 23:00 MLT, consistent with solar wind controlled transport of EUV ionized plasma across the polar cap from day to night. High density plasma patch material is drawn in through the cusp inflow region independent of IMF <I>B<sub>Y</sub></I>. There is no apparent IMF <I>B<sub>Y</sub></I> asymmetry on the intake of high density plasma, but the trajectory of its motion is strongly <I>B<sub>Y</sub></I> dependent. Comparison with the international reference ionosphere model (IRI2001) clearly demonstrates that the model does not take account of the cross-polar transport of F2-region plasma, and hence has limited applicability in polar cap regions
From Newton's Laws to the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation
This is a pedagogical paper which explains some ideas in cosmology at a level
accessible to undergraduate students. It does not use general relativity, but
uses the ideas of Newtonian cosmology worked out by Milne and McCrea. The
cosmological constant is also introduced within a Newtonian framework.
Following standard quantization procedures the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the
