    A Study on the Ability of Second Year Students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau in Supplying Correct Punctuations

    This study is aimed at investigating the level of the students' ability at English Study Program of Universitas Riau in supplying correct punctuations. The research design is a descriptive quantitative. There were 45 students chosen as the samples of this research. The instruments of the research were 30 multiple choice questions assessed by using Heaton's formula that were analyzed by using Harris' measurement. It was found that the average score of the students ability in supplying correct punctuations was 47,9. To be more specific the result finding shows that there were 3 (6,6%) students in excellent ability level. Then, there were 9 (20%) students who were in good ability level. Moreover, there were 12 (26,7%) students who were in mediocre ability level and there were 17 ( 37,8%) students who were in poor level. Last, there were 4 (8,9%) students who were in very poor level

    The Use of Think-pair-share Technique to Improve the Writing Ability of the Students of SMA Negeri 03 Pekanbaru in Recount Text

    The aimof this research was to know whether or not Think-Pair-Share technique could improve students' ability in writing recount texts and how it could improve the ability. Classroom action research was conducted in two cycles to 34 students of X-2Class of SMAN 03 Pekanbaru as the participant of this research. The data were collected through written test, observation sheet, and field note. This research findings found that Think-Pair-Share technique could improve the students' ability in writing recount texts. Students' mean score improved from 54.46 in pre-test to 65.14 in post-test 1, and to 77.64 in post-test 2. It is in line with the activeness of students that improved from 46.08% in cycle 1 to 86.26% in cycle 2. Think-Pair-Share technique helped students in writing the recount texts. It analyzes each part of generic structure of recount text. Think-Pair-Share strategy could motivate the students during teaching and learning process. This research recommended that teachers to use Think-Pair-Share to find out the different effect after using this cooperative learning technique than a conventional technique

    Improving Students' Reading Comprehension of the Tenth Grade Class Akuntansi 3 of Smk Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru Through Reading Aloud

    This classroom action research was aimed to know whether reading aloud strategy can improve students' reading comprehension of the tenth grade class Akuntansi 3 of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. This research consisted of one cycle. Thirty six students participated in this study. The data were collected from several sources; reading comprehension tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The result showed that the mean score of post test (80) was higher than mean score of pre-test (73). The observation result also showed that the there was an increase number of students' participation in every single activity. We can saw that there was the increasing average number become 94.44%. It means that more than 80% of students were active in teaching and learning process. It can be conclude that reading aloud strategy can improve students' reading comprehension of the tenth grade class Akuntansi 3 of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru

    A Study on the Ability of the Third Year Students of the English Study Program of Fkip Riau University in Writing a Narrative Essay

    The objective of this study is to find out the level ability of the third year students of the English Study Program of FKIP Riau University in writing a narrative essay. The research design is a descriptive quantitative research. There are 25 students chosen as the samples of this research. The instrument of the research was a written test that was assessed by the three raters by referring Heaton's scoring guide and Harris' measurement. It was found that 3 students (12%) were in excellent level, 12 students (48%) were in good level, 9 students (36%) were in mediocre level, 1 student (4%) was in poor level, and there was no student in very poor level. It can be concluded that the students can write a narrative essay with the average score was 65,15. Overall, the students' problems were dominated in category of language USAge. Most of students made a lot mistakes in using tenses and constructing sentences

    A Study on the Ability of the Second Year Students of Smk Taruna Pekanbaru in Rearranging Scrambled Sentences Into Good Paragraphs

    This descriptive research was aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs. This research focuses on students' ability in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs based on rhetorical markers of constructing sentences. The data were collected using sentences-reordering test. The test contained 20items of scrambled sentences. The population were the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru that consist of 220 students. The sample size were 52 students who are from Class XI TAV and XI TSP chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The needed data were collected by giving written test that consist of 2 different of texts that posses different rhetorical markers. Based on the research, the data was found that students ability in rearranging scrambled sentences is in mediocre level of ability with the mean score was 60. According to this study, it is expected that teachers can use this type of test in the form of scrambled sentences to increase students' ability in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs

    A Study on the Ability of the First Year Students of Sman 7 Siak in Combining Sentences Using Relative Pronouns

    The research is a descriptive research that was conducted based on the problem occurred at the first years students of SMA 7 Siak; namely the students were lack in making sentences using relative pronouns that influence them got poor sore in test. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out on the ability of the first years students of SMA 7 Siak in combining sentences using relative pronouns. The participants were 35 students from first years of SMA 7 Siak. This research was conducted for about four months(February – May, 2015) and wad taken on April 6th and April 8th , 2015 at SMAN 7 Siak, Tut WuriHandayani street No.1, Kandis. The data collection technique was obtained through (1) try out which was applied to know the quality of the test items, particularly to determine the item difficulty and item discrimination and (2) test was done to measure students' achievement. The research finding can briefly explain as follow: First the result of the test shows that the easiest relative pronouns is ‘where' (average to good level), while the most difficult relative pronouns is ‘whom' (poor level). It can be seen in the mean score for relative pronoun ‘where' is 66,25 (average to good level) and the mean score for relative pronoun ‘whom' is 34,38 (poor level)

    Using Word Mapping Technique to Improve the Students\u27 Speaking Ability on Hortatory Exposition Text at SMAN 3 Merbau

    This classroom action research was aimed to find out if Word Mapping technique in Brainstorming can improve the speaking ability of the students on Hortatory Exposition Text at grade XI Science Class 1 of SMAN 3 Merbau. The participants of this research were all of the students grade XI Science Class 1 of SMAN 3 Merbau (28 students).The procedures applied were: (a) explaining the objective of the learning, the teaching material, material, the text type; hortatory exposition, and the steps in using the technique, (b) dividing students into some groups of discussion and the teacher delivered the learning instruments needed such as flip chart and markers, (c) explaining about Hortatory Exposition Text to the students, (d) choosing the topic together, (e) asking asked to work in their group in limited time to generate ideas related to the topic as many as possible, (f) facilitating students in discussion, and (g) presenting the ideas in front of the class. The data were collected by using tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The level of achievement in this research was 70, based on the standard minimum criteria of achievement of English subject in SMAN 3 Merbau. The research finding showed that the implementation of Word Mapping technique could improve students\u27 speaking ability both at the first and second cycle. Based on the data analysis, the students\u27 score improved from 39,66 in the pre-test, to 56,72 in post-test 1, and up to 72,16 in post-test II. Therefore, the implementation of Word Mapping technique could improve students\u27 speaking ability on Hortatory Exposition text at SMAN 3 Merbau

    Efek dari Menggunakan Teknik Mind Mapping pada Kemampuan Siswa Kelas Satu SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru dalam Menulis Teks Deskriptif

    This pre-experimental design aimed to find out the effect of mind mapping technique in writing descriptive texts. This pre-experimental research was used one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample of this research was the first year students of SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru. The partcipants were 39 students. The reasons for conducting this research because of several problems: the students faced some problem in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Furthermore, the students have difficulties to develop their ideas in writing descriptive text. The steps of research procedure are conducting pre-test, treatment, post-test and data analysis. The data were assessed by the three raters and analyzed by using t-test formula. The data analysis showed that the implementation of mind mapping technique as the teaching technique was effective to improve students' ability in writing descriptive texts. The finding also proved that in the pre-test students' average score was only 58.72 and it improved to 76.07 in the post-test. In addition, applying mind mapping as a teaching technique in English language teaching and learning could also improve students' ability to write English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, organization, and fluency
