Symmetry causes a huge conductance peak in double quantum dots

We predict a huge interference effect contributing to the conductance through large ultra-clean quantum dots of chaotic shape. When a double-dot structure is made such that the dots are the mirror-image of each other, constructive interference can make a tunnel barrier located on the symmetry axis effectively transparent. We show (via theoretical analysis and numerical simulation) that this effect can be orders of magnitude larger than the well-known universal conductance fluctuations and weak-localization (both less than a conductance quantum). A small magnetic field destroys the effect, massively reducing the double-dot conductance; thus a magnetic field detector is obtained, with a similar sensitivity to a SQUID, but requiring no superconductors.Comment: 5pages 3 figures and an appendix ONLY in arXiv versio

ICT as a tool to foster inclusion: interactive maps to access cultural heritage sites

    Get PDF
Within the European policies and strategies for a sustainable development, the role of cultural heritage as an economic, environmental and social driver has become increasingly significant. As an asset in people’s lives, it’s necessary to assure anyone the opportunity to access it, regardless of the physical abilities or cultural background of a person. In this sense, ICT could represent an important instrument in enhancing the level of inclusion in cultural heritage sites. This paper develops the discussion around interactive maps as a feasible solution to ensure a fully inclusive experience of a cultural heritage site. Thanks to the analysis of similar existing instruments, this operative tool has been conceived to perform two fundamental functions. First, provide an information system thanks to which everyone, particularly users with special needs, could be able to organize their movements and be aware of the proposed services (that also could be new ICT, like Virtual and Augmented Reality, implemented directly in the map) and opportunities to access cultural heritage. Second, offer a tool for the management of the projects related to the development of inclusion, therefore it is addressed to municipal administrators and other key actors involved in the governance of cultural heritage

Gardella/il trasmettere: La fotografia tra iconizzazione e reperto

    Get PDF

Analysis of shot noise suppression in mesoscopic cavities in a magnetic field

We present a numerical investigation of shot noise suppression in mesoscopic cavities and an intuitive semiclassical explanation of the behavior observed in the presence of an orthogonal magnetic field. In particular, we conclude that the decrease of shot noise for increasing magnetic field is the result of the interplay between the diameter of classical cyclotron orbits and the width of the apertures defining the cavity. Good agreement with published experimental results is obtained, without the need of introducing fitting parameters.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, contents changed (final version

INCLUSIVE CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES: ICT AS A TOOL TO SUPPORT THE DESIGN PROCESS AND SHARE KNOWLEDGE

    Get PDF
Within the European strategies for a sustainable development, the role of cultural heritage as an economic, environmental and social driver has become increasingly significant. As an asset in people’s lives, it’s necessary to assure anyone the opportunity to access it. For this reason, urban transformation policies must guarantee the proper compromise between the requirements of conservation and physical/cognitive accessibility. This entails a clear design complexity, which however cannot justify the lack of intervention, but must propose new governance models for an inclusive design process. In a broader research framework, the implementation of ICT has turned out to be a solution that can address some issues in enhancing the level of inclusion in cultural heritage sites. Particularly, the conception of an interactive map has seemed the proper perspective of producing a feasible operative tool. The first aim is linked to the necessity of having an information system thank to which everyone, particularly users with special needs, could be able to organize their movements and be aware of the proposed services and fulfilled inclusive strategies. The second target is connected to the management of the projects related to the development of inclusion, therefore it is addressed to municipal administrators and other key actors involved in the governance of cultural heritage. Finally, the discussion about the main objectives and features of an interactive map wants to highlight the role that ICT can assume within an inclusive design approach, for which is needed a tool able to support the intervention on the physical environment and offer further essential services.</p
