Inverse Classification for Comparison-based Interpretability in Machine Learning
In the context of post-hoc interpretability, this paper addresses the task of
explaining the prediction of a classifier, considering the case where no
information is available, neither on the classifier itself, nor on the
processed data (neither the training nor the test data). It proposes an
instance-based approach whose principle consists in determining the minimal
changes needed to alter a prediction: given a data point whose classification
must be explained, the proposed method consists in identifying a close
neighbour classified differently, where the closeness definition integrates a
sparsity constraint. This principle is implemented using observation generation
in the Growing Spheres algorithm. Experimental results on two datasets
illustrate the relevance of the proposed approach that can be used to gain
knowledge about the classifier.Comment: preprin
Alterations of Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Induced by Interaction with Allogeneic Lymphocytes In Vitro
Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are widely used for cell therapy. Treatment with interferon-Îł (IFNÎł) increases the immunomodulating properties of MSCs. When administered intravenously, MSCs interact with lymphocytes. It is impossible to follow the fate of MSCs in the recipient organism. The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of MSCs after their interaction with lymphocytes in vitro. Bone marrow MSCs were co-cultured for 4 days with activated and non-activated lymphocytes. A portion of the MSCs was pretreated with IFNÎł. HLA-DR expression on the MSCs increased when these cells were co-cultured with lymphocytes and after they were treated with IFNÎł. The activated lymphocytes induced significantly higher HLA-DR expression levels than did IFNÎł treatment. IFNÎł increased the viability of MSCs when these cells were co-cultured with lymphocytes. The immunomodulating properties of MSCs were amplified after IFNÎł priming and co-cultivation with lymphocytes; therefore, this amplification was not dependent on the IFNÎł source. IFNÎł treatment and lymphocyte interactions induced increases in the relative expression levels (RELs) of ICAM1 and factors involved in immunomodulation in the MSCs. IFNÎł stabilizes MSCs while maintaining their viability. The data suggest that MSCs obtained from the hematopoietic cells donor or autologous should be used for cell therapy
Patient information after hospitalization improves humanistic care in intensive care units
Introduction The purpose of the study was to assess the prognosis value of pro-adrenomedullin (pADM), C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT), lactate (LT), albumin (ALB), cholesterol (CHOL), white blood cell (WBC) and severity score in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock.
Methods A prospective, observational study in adult patients with severe sepsis or septic shock in a polyvalent ICU. Demographics, severity scores (APACHE II and SOFA) and all of the biomarkers were
studied within 24+ hours from septic shock onset. Descriptive and comparative statistical analysis was performed using the statistical software packages SPSS v.15 and MedCalc® 9.2.1.0. Conclusion The protein pADM, LT and ALB showed good prognosis
accuracy when measured on admission of septic patients to the ICU.Ye
Follistatin as potential therapeutic target in prostate cancer
Follistatin is a single-chain glycosylated protein
whose primary function consists in binding and neutralizing
some members of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily
such as activin and bone morphogenic proteins.
Emerging evidence indicates that this molecule may also
play a role in the malignant progression of several human
tumors including prostate cancer. In particular, recent findings
suggest that, in this tumor, follistatin may also contribute
to the formation of bone metastasis through multiple
mechanisms, some of which are not related to its specific
activin or bone morphogenic proteins’ inhibitory activity.
This review provides insight into the most recent advances
in understanding the role of follistatin in the prostate cancer
progression and discusses the clinical and therapeutic implications
related to these findings
Interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras
We introduce the concept of quasi-coincidence of a fuzzy interval value with
an interval valued fuzzy set. By using this new idea, we introduce the notions
of interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras and
investigate some of their related properties. Some characterization theorems of
these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters are derived. The relationship
among these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras
is considered. Finally, we consider the concept of implication-based interval
valued fuzzy implicative filters of pseudo -algebras, in particular, the
implication operators in Lukasiewicz system of continuous-valued logic are
discussed
Hydrological (in)stability in Southern Siberia during the Younger Dryas and early Holocene
Southern Siberia is currently undergoing rapid warming, inducing changes in vegetation, loss of permafrost, and impacts on the hydrodynamics of lakes and rivers. Lake sediments are key archives of environmental change and contain a record of ecosystem variability, as well as providing proxy indicators of wider environmental and climatic change. Investigating how hydrological systems have responded to past shifts in climate can provide essential context for better understanding future ecosystem changes in Siberia. Oxygen isotope ratios within lacustrine records provide fundamental information on past variability in hydrological systems. Here we present a new oxygen isotope record from diatom silica (ẟ18Odiatom) at Lake Baunt (55°11′15″N, 113°01,45″E), in the southern part of eastern Siberia, and consider how the site has responded to climate changes between the Younger Dryas and Early to Mid Holocene (ca. 12.4 to 6.2 ka cal BP). Excursions in ẟ18Odiatom are influenced by air temperature and the seasonality, quantity, and source of atmospheric precipitation. These variables are a function of the strength of the Siberian High, which controls temperature, the proportion and quantity of winter versus summer precipitation, and the relative dominance of Atlantic versus Pacific air masses. A regional comparison with other Siberian ẟ18Odiatom records, from lakes Baikal and Kotokel, suggests that ẟ18Odiatom variations in southern Siberia reflect increased continentality during the Younger Dryas, delayed Early Holocene warming in the region, and substantial climate instability between ~10.5 to ~8.2 ka cal BP. Unstable conditions during the Early Holocene thermal optimum most likely reflect localised changes from glacial melting. Taking the profiles from three very different lakes together, highlight the influence of site specific factors on the individual records, and how one site is not indicative of the region as a whole. Overall, the study documents how sensitive this important region is to both internal and external forcing
Psychometric properties of 4-item questionnaire for sleep habits and time in a South American paediatric population
Objectives: To assess the psychometric properties of 4-item questionnaire about sleep habits and time in South American children (3-10 years) and adolescents (11-18 years). Material and Methods: We evaluated 459 participants from seven South American cities. Two items from week and weekend days wake up time and bedtime were asked twice, with a 2-week interval. We calculated time spent in bed (subtracting wake up time from bedtime). Participants also answered the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) sleep time questionnaire. Results: The questionnaire showed acceptable temporal stability in children and adolescents on total days (rho >= 0.30; p<0.05). For total days, the questionnaire presented acceptable convergent validity only in children (rho from 0.48 to 0.62; p <= 0.01) compared with the HELENA questionnaire. Conclusion: The 4-item questionnaire is a reliable and valid tool for children; however, its validity is not consistent in adolescents for sleep habits and time
