Selected Properties of Chaste Tree and Sunflower Husk Filled Thermoplastic Composite
In this study, mechanical and physical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) based
composite filled with two different lignocellulose fibers were investigated. Polymer composite were prepared
by using HDPE as a polymer matrix and sunflower seed husk (Helianthus annuus L.) or chaste tree (Vitex
negondu L.) as lignocellulosic filler at 15% and 30% loading. The effect of filler types and concentration on
the mechanical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) based composites were investigated. Pellets
were first manufactured through single screw extruder. Then, manufactured pellets were turned into
composite samples by using injection molding machine. Tensile, flexural and impact properties were
determined according to ASTM D638, ASTM D790 and ASTM D256, respectively. Addition of chaste tree
fiber to thermoplastic composite provided better mechanical and physical properties compare to sunflower
husk. All manufactured groups provided necessary values required by the ASTM D 6622 standard
indeksinin odun plastik kompozitlerin (OPK) özelliklerine etkisinin
This study investigated the effect of untreated and heat-treated ash and black pine wood flour concentrations on the selected properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. HDPE and wood flour were used as thermoplastic matrix and filler, respectively. The blends of HDPE and wood fl our were compounded using single screw extruder and test samples were prepared through injection molding. Mechanical properties like tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM), elongation at break (EatB), fl exural strength (FS), fl exural modulus (FM) and impact strength (IS) of manufactured composites were determined. Wood fl our concentrations have significantly increased density, FS, TM and FM and hardness of composites while reducing TS, EatB and IS. Heat-treated ash and black pine fl our reinforced HDPE composites had higher mechanical properties than untreated ones. Composites showed two main decomposition peaks; one coming from ash wood flour (353-370 °C) and black pine wood fl our (373-376 °C), the second one from HDPE degradation (469-490 °C). SEM images showed improved dispersion of heat-treated ash and black pine wood flour. The obtained results showed that both the untreated and heat-treated ash/black pine wood flour have an important potential in the manufacture of HDPE composites.U radu je opisano istraživanje utjecaja koncentracije drvnog brašna od nemodifi ciranog i toplinski modificiranog drva jasena i crnog bora na odabrana svojstva kompozita visoke gustoće na bazi polietilena (HDPE). Koncentracije drvnog brašna značajno su povećale gustoću, tvrdoću, FS, TM i FM, a smanjile TS, EatB i IS.
EFFECT OF DOLOMITE POWDER ON COMBUSTION AND TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF WPC AND NEAT POLYPROPYLENE
Water resistance, mechanical properties, and limiting oxygen index (LOI) of wood plastic composites (WPCs) and neat polypropylene filled with different amounts (3, 6, and 9% by weight) of dolomite powder and wood flour (15 and 30 by weight) were investigated. Wood flour, dolomite powder, polypropylene, and wax were dry-mixed in a high-intensity mixer to produce a homogeneous blend. This blend was then compounded in a laboratory-scale single screw extruder. Test specimens were produced by injection moulding process from the pellets dried to moisture content of 1%. The thickness swelling and water absorption of the dolomite polypropylene composites (DPCs) and WPCs slightly increased with increasing dolomite powder content but the differences were not significant. The flexural modulus and tensile modulus of the WPCs and DPCs increased with increasing dolomite powder content while the flexural strength and tensile strength slightly decreased. The LOI of the WPCs and DPCs increased with increasing dolomite powder content, which extended the times to ignition of WPC and polypropylene. Based on the findings obtained from the present study, it can be said that 6 wt% dolomite powder is the optimum amount in the manufacture of WPC and DPC
Effect of wood acetylation with vinyl acetate and acetic anhydride on the properties of wood-plastic composites
Chemical modifications of Scots pine (Pinus slyvestris) wood flour were performed with vinyl acetate (VA) and acetic anhydride (AA) in the presence of potassium carbonate as a catalyst. Scots pine wood flour samples were successfully acetylated with VA (19 wt% gain) and AA (24 wt% gain). The effect of chemical modification of the Scots pine wood flour with AA and VA on the mechanical properties of wood high-density polyethylene composites (WPC) were determined. It was observed that acetylation of wood flour allowed a significant increase in both the mechanical properties and the thermal stability of the WPCs. It was concluded that acetylation of lignocellulosic fibers improves thermal stability, dispersion in the polymer matrix, and compatibility with the polymer matrix
Utilization of Flours from Hemp Stalks as Reinforcement in Polypropylene Matrix
Utilization of hemp stalks (HS) was investigated as filler and maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP) as a coupling agent relative to some mechanical, physical, morphological, and thermal properties of polypropylene (PP) composites. The test sample manufacturing used 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 wt% of HS and 0 wt% or 3 wt% of MAPP. Test specimens were manufactured by combining extrusion and injection molding processes. Results showed that incorporating filler and MAPP increased the mechanical properties significantly. The utilization of HS filler or MAPP provided an improvement of 11.7% (samples containing 35 wt% HS and 3 wt% MAPP) improvement in tensile strength, 44.2% (samples containing 35 wt% HS and 3 wt% MAPP) in flexural strength, and 60.2% (samples containing 30 wt% HS and 0 wt% MAPP) in impact strength compared to neat PP. The scanning electron microscopy analysis provided visual evidence that MAPP improved adhesion between the filler and the polymer matrix. This study showed that using hemp stalks in composite manufacturing provided good overall properties
