    Elliptic aspects of statistical mechanics on spheres

    Our earlier results on the temperature inversion properties and the ellipticisation of the finite temperature internal energy on odd spheres are extended to orbifold factors of odd spheres and then to other thermodynamic quantities, in particular to the specific heat. The behaviour under modular transformations is facilitated by the introduction of a modular covariant derivative and it is shown that the specific heat on any odd sphere can be expressed in terms of just three functions.     Identifying high-mobility tetracene derivatives using a non-adiabatic molecular dynamics approach

    The search for conductive soft matter materials with significant charge mobility under ambient conditions has been a major priority in organic electronics (OE) research. Alkylated tetracenes are promising cost-effective candidate molecules that can be synthesized using wet chemistry methods, resulting in columnar single crystals with pronounced structural stability at and above room temperature. A remarkable characteristic of these materials is the capability of tuning the tetracene core intracolumnar stacking pattern and the crystal melting point via the side chain length and type modifications. In this study, we examine the performance of a series of alkylated tetracenes as hole conducting materials using a novel atomistic simulation technique that allows us to predict both the charge transport mechanism and mobilities. Our simulations demonstrate that molecular wires of alkylated tetracenes are capable of polaronic hole conduction at room temperature, with mobility values ranging up to 21 cm2 V−1 s−1, thus rendering such materials a highly promising choice for flexible OE applications. As regards the charge transfer robustness, two promising tetracene derivatives are identified with the capability of seamless inter-wire polaron delocalization, alleviating possible transfer bottlenecks due to local molecular defects.     Statistical Model of Superconductivity in a 2D Binary Boson-Fermion Mixture

    A two-dimensional (2D) assembly of noninteracting, temperature-dependent, composite-boson Cooper pairs (CPs) in chemical and thermal equilibrium with unpaired fermions is examined in a binary boson-fermion statistical model as the superconducting singularity temperature is approached from above. The model is derived from {\it first principles} for the BCS model interfermion interaction from three extrema of the system Helmholtz free energy (subject to constant pairable-fermion number) with respect to: a) the pairable-fermion distribution function; b) the number of excited (bosonic) CPs, i.e., with nonzero total momenta--usually ignored in BCS theory--and with the appropriate (linear, as opposed to quadratic) dispersion relation that arises from the Fermi sea; and c) the number of CPs with zero total momenta. Compared with the BCS theory condensate, higher singularity temperatures for the Bose-Einstein condensate are obtained in the binary boson-fermion mixture model which are in rough agreement with empirical critical temperatures for quasi-2D superconductorsComment: 16 pages and 4 figures.     Investigating the Role of Hypothalamic Tumor Involvement in Sleep and Cognitive Outcomes Among Children Treated for Craniopharyngioma

    Objective: Despite excellent survival prognosis, children treated for craniopharyngioma experience significant morbidity. We examined the role of hypothalamic involvement (HI) in excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and attention regulation in children enrolled on a Phase II trial of limited surgery and proton therapy. Methods: Participants completed a sleep evaluation (N = 62) and a continuous performance test (CPT) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI; n = 29) prior to proton therapy. Results: EDS was identified in 76% of the patients and was significantly related to increased HI extent (p = .04). There was no relationship between CPT performance during fMRI and HI or EDS. Visual examination of group composite fMRI images revealed greater spatial extent of activation in frontal cortical regions in patients with EDS, consistent with a compensatory activation hypothesis. Conclusion: Routine screening for sleep problems during therapy is indicated for children with craniopharyngioma, to optimize the timing of interventions and reduce long-term morbidity
