Book Review: The Winding-Up of Insolvent Companies in England and France
Livadas provides an especially adept analysis and comparison of the treatment of employees of insolvent companies in the two countries. The author convincingly demonstrates that a French liquidation des biens protects employee wages, benefits, and claims more extensively than an English winding-up proceeding. The French requirement of compulsory insurance to protect the wages of employees and the special privilege afforded employees against the immovable assets of a French company are without analogy in English winding-up law. Livadas punctuates the chapters on the liabilities of officers and directors, which are generally more strict in France than in England, and the priorities of distribution of assets with incomprehensible mathematical examples, complete to two decimal places.
The author\u27s conclusion, contained in a scant one and one-half pages at the end of this 400-page text, cry out for expansion. Several of his conclusory points have been previously mentioned only in passing, and at obscure junctures of the text. The reader senses that this author may have had many interesting observations to share but failed to present them. Livadas obviously has developed an intimate and profound understanding of his subject, but has cluttered the broad framework of this work with so much minutiae that the finished product is almost impenetrable
Circularly polarized waves in a plasma with vacuum polarization effects
The theory for large amplitude circularly polarized waves propagating along
an external magnetic field is extended in order to include also vacuum
polarization effects. A general dispersion relation, which unites previous
results, is derived.Comment: 5 pages (To appear in Physics of Plasmas

Implementation and impact of pediatric antimicrobial stewardship programs: a systematic scoping review.
Background: Antibiotics are the most common medicines prescribed to children in hospitals and the community, with a high proportion of potentially inappropriate use. Antibiotic misuse increases the risk of toxicity, raises healthcare costs, and selection of resistance. The primary aim of this systematic review is to summarize the current state of evidence of the implementation and outcomes of pediatric antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) globally. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched to identify studies reporting on ASP in children aged 0-18 years and conducted in outpatient or in-hospital settings. Three investigators independently reviewed identified articles for inclusion and extracted relevant data. Results: Of the 41,916 studies screened, 113 were eligible for inclusion in this study. Most of the studies originated in the USA (52.2%), while a minority were conducted in Europe (24.7%) or Asia (17.7%). Seventy-four (65.5%) studies used a before-and-after design, and sixteen (14.1%) were randomized trials. The majority (81.4%) described in-hospital ASPs with half of interventions in mixed pediatric wards and ten (8.8%) in emergency departments. Only sixteen (14.1%) studies focused on the costs of ASPs. Almost all the studies (79.6%) showed a significant reduction in inappropriate prescriptions. Compliance after ASP implementation increased. Sixteen of the included studies quantified cost savings related to the intervention with most of the decreases due to lower rates of drug administration. Seven studies showed an increased susceptibility of the bacteria analysed with a decrease in extended spectrum beta-lactamase producers E. coli and K. pneumoniae; a reduction in the rate of P. aeruginosa carbapenem resistance subsequent to an observed reduction in the rate of antimicrobial days of therapy; and, in two studies set in outpatient setting, an increase in erythromycin-sensitive S. pyogenes following a reduction in the use of macrolides. Conclusions: Pediatric ASPs have a significant impact on the reduction of targeted and empiric antibiotic use, healthcare costs, and antimicrobial resistance in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Pediatric ASPs are now widely implemented in the USA, but considerable further adaptation is required to facilitate their uptake in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa
Odin observations of ammonia in the Sgr A +50 km/s Cloud and Circumnuclear Disk
Context. The Odin satellite is now into its sixteenth year of operation, much
surpassing its design life of two years. One of the sources which Odin has
observed in great detail is the Sgr A Complex in the centre of the Milky Way.
Aims. To study the presence of NH3 in the Galactic Centre and spiral arms.
Methods. Recently, Odin has made complementary observations of the 572 GHz NH3
line towards the Sgr A +50 km/s Cloud and Circumnuclear Disk (CND). Results.
Significant NH3 emission has been observed in both the +50 km/s Cloud and the
CND. Clear NH3 absorption has also been detected in many of the spiral arm
features along the line of sight from the Sun to the core of our Galaxy.
Conclusions. The very large velocity width (80 km/s) of the NH3 emission
associated with the shock region in the southwestern part of the CND may
suggest a formation/desorption scenario similar to that of gas-phase H2O in
shocks/outflows.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
Impurity-induced dephasing of Andreev states
A study is presented concerning the influence of flicker noise in the
junction transparency on coherent transport in Andreev states. The amount of
dephasing is estimated for a microwave-activated quantum interferometer.
Possibilities of experimentally investigating the coupling between a
superconducting quantum point contact and its electromagnetic environment are
discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Poisson equation and self-consistent periodical Anderson model
We show that the formally exact expression for the free energy (with a
non-relativistic Hamiltonian) for the correlated metal generates the Poisson
equation within the saddle-point approximation for the electric potential,
where the charge density automatically includes correlations. In this
approximation the problem is reduced to the self-consistent periodical Anderson
model (SCPAM). The parameter of the mixing interaction in this formulation have
to be found self-consistently together with the correlated charge density. The
factors, calculated by Irkhin, for the mixing interaction, which reflect the
structure of the many-electron states of the \f-ion involved, arise
automatically in this formulation and are quite sensitive to the specific
element we are interested in. We also discuss the definitions of the mixing
interaction for the mapping from ab initio to model calculations.Comment: 25 pages, no figure
Short wavelength quantum electrodynamical correction to cold plasma-wave propagation
The effect of short wavelength quantum electrodynamic (QED) correction on
plasma-wave propagation is investigated. The effect on plasma oscillations and
on electromagnetic waves in an unmagnetized as well as a magnetized plasma is
investigated. The effects of the short wavelength QED corrections are most
significant for plasma oscillations and for extraordinary modes. In particular,
the QED correction allow plasma oscillations to propagate, and the
extra-ordinary mode looses its stop band. The significance of our results is
discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
