Nontechnical issues in waste management: ethical, institutional, and political concerns

    No full text
The report consists of a presentation and distillation of major nontechnical issues surrounding commercial waste management, followed by ethical, institutional, and political analyses of these issues. The ethical analysis consists of a discusson of what is meant by ''ethics'' and ''morality'' in the waste management context and an illustrative attempt at an ethical analysis of the commercial nuclear waste problem. Two institutional analyses are presented: one is an analysis of the possible problems of long-term human institutions in waste management; the other is a presentation of institutional arrangements for the short term. A final chapter discusses issues and concerns involving intergovernmental relations--that is, local, state, and federal interface problems in waste management

MTCA.4-based clock and timing distribution for PETRA IV

At DESY, the technical design phase to upgrade the PETRA III storage ring towards the 4th-generation synchrotron light source PETRA is ongoing. This foresees a complete renewal of the machine including its existing timing and synchronisation system. The new timing and synchronisation system needs to deliver precise clocking, which will be implemented by an application-specific hardware design. Further on, it has to provide trigger signals and beam-synchronous information to the subsystems located across the facility. The main hardware for the timing system will be based on the MTCA.4 standard. This platform has been successfully implemented here at DESY / EuXFEL. Because of new specific requirements for PETRA IV, the successor hardware has to be adapted and upgraded to a new design. This Poster shows the system design and the facility-wide distribution of precise clocks, trigger signals and timing system-related meta-information. We illustrate how the new MTCA.4-based AMC card (DAMC-X3TIMER) meets the requirements for PETRA IV. Insights into ongoing lab tests on components qualification and the status of the development will be presented

Effective use of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell rescue for relapsed adult Wilms' tumor and a novel alteration in intron 1 of the WT1 gene

Adult Wilms' tumor (AWT) is a very rare and aggressive malignancy, and little information is available on effective therapy in adults. Although mutations in WT1 have been found in 10% to 15% of childhood Wilms' tumor patients, to date WT1 mutations in AWT patients have not been described. The authors describe a 47-year-old man with relapsed AWT and a novel germline alteration in intron 1 of WT1: IVS1-6 C-->A. This alteration may reduce the splicing efficiency for exon 2 and possibly results in exon skipping. The effective salvage chemotherapy contained ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide and was followed by a high-dose chemotherapy that contained melphalan, carboplatin, and etoposide. Both chemotherapy regimens showed moderate treatment-related toxicity. This report is the first that indicates that adult nephroblastoma patients also may carry WT1 germline mutations
