    Interaction of O vacancies and domain structures in single crystal BaTi O3: Two-dimensional ferroelectric model

    Two-dimensional simulations on the interactions of oxygen vacancies and different domain structures in barium titanate single crystal were carried out using the phase field method. The evolution of the spontaneous polarizations and oxygen vacancies was coupled through Maxwell's equation. The results showed that two barriers near the electrodes existed in both the 90°and 180°domain structures. It has also been observed that while an intrinsic electrostatic potential drop across the 90°domain wall created the electric fields which drove the electrons and oxygen vacancies aggregate on the different sides of the domain wall, the 180°domain wall had insignificant interaction with the potential, and no electron or vacancy accumulation in 180°domain structure was observed.     Enhanced hydrogen sensing properties of graphene by introducing a mono-atom-vacancy

    To facilitate the dissociative adsorption of H2 molecules on pristine graphene, the addition of a mono-atom-vacancy to graphene is proposed. This leads to reduction of the dissociative energy barrier for a H2 molecule on graphene from 3.097 to 0.805 eV for the first H2 and 0.869 eV for the second, according to first principles calculations. As a result, two H2 molecules can be easily dissociatively adsorbed on this defected graphene at room temperature. The electronic structure and conductivity of the graphene change significantly after H2 adsorption. In addition, the related dissociative adsorption phase diagrams under different temperatures and partial pressures show that this dissociative adsorption at room temperature is very sensitive (10-35 mol L -1). Therefore, this defected graphene is promising for ultra-sensitive room temperature hydrogen sensing. © 2013 the Owner Societies

    Unique Carboniferous-Permian tectonic-metallogenic framework of Northern Xinjiang (NW China): Constraints for the tectonics of the southern Paleoasian Domain

    The late Paleozoic tectonic-metallogenic framework of North Xinjiang of the southern Paleoasian Domain was characterized by a serious of Carboniferous-Permian events, including: (1) late Carboniferous-Permian Chinese Altay island arc and its metamorphism, granulite in the Chinese Altay, radiolarian chert and high-pressure/ultra-high-pressure metamorphism; (2) late Carboniferous-early Permian adakites, Alaskan-type mafic-ultramafic complexes, and calc-alkaline magmatism, together with porphyry copper deposits, which occurred in the North Xinjiang; and (3) late Carboniferous ophiolite and island arc volcanic rocks located in the Tian Shan. Combined with the facts that there was no typical foreland basin, no typical collisional-type granitoid, and there were large amount of strike-slip faulting, it is suggested that in the Carboniferous-early Permian North Xinjiang was characterized by the coexistence of compression-extension-strike-slip structures with active magmatism and metallogeny. These phenomena all indicate that there were active margins during the late Carboniferous-early Permian, leading to the notion that the complicated accretionary orogeny along the southern Paleoasian Domain may have lasted to the latest Carboniferous-Permian.新疆北部晚古生代独特的构造一成矿作用以发育大量石炭纪一二叠纪构造一成矿事件为特征, 其中包括: (l) 发育于晚石炭世一二叠世的阿尔泰岛弧及其变质事件、阿尔泰麻粒岩与基性杂岩、西南天山放射虫硅质岩和高压一超高压一低压麻拉岩相变质事件; (2 )北疆发育的石炭纪(一二叠世)埃达克岩一高镁安山岩一富N d 玄武质岩组合、阿拉斯加型基性一超基性杂岩和大量的与俯冲相关的钙碱性岩浆活动与斑岩型铜矿床成矿作用; (3) 天山晚石炭世晚期蛇绿岩与岛弧火山岩等。结合北疆地区相关的前陆盆地发育不明显、碰撞型花岗岩欠发育与大量发育平行造山带大型走滑构造等现象, 可以认为新疆北部在石炭纪一二叠纪挤压一伸展一走滑并存, 岩浆活动与成矿作用活跃。这些新进展表明新疆北部在晚石炭世一二叠纪可能仍存在活动陆缘, 因此, 古亚洲洋构造域南部复杂增生造山作用最后延至晚石炭世晚期一二叠纪。published_or_final_versio

    Interaction of a novel red-region fluorescent probe, Nile Blue, with DNA and its application to nucleic acids assay

    A novel fluorimetric method was developed for the rapid determination of DNA and RNA based on their quenching effect on the cationic red-region fluorescent dye Nile Blue (NB) In the investigation of the interaction of NE with DNA by steady-state polarization measurements, thermal denaturing study, determination of absorption and fluorescence characteristics, salt effect study and electrophoresis experiments, the results supported the suggestion that NE served as an intercalator to the stack base pairs of nucleic acids. Further evidence showed that the quenching could be ascribed to the static quenching mode. A binding constant of about 10(6) M-1 and a binding site size of about three base pairs were obtained by spectral methods. Under optimum conditions, the calibration curves for the determination of calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) and yeast RNA were linear over the ranges 3.0 ng mL(-1)-2.0 mu g mL(-1) and 27 ng mL(-1)-10 mu g mL(-1), respectively, The detection limits were 3.0 ng mL(-1) for CT DNA and 27 ng mL(-1) for RNA. The relative standard deviation (n = 6) was within 2.1% in the middle of the linear range. Interferences from some interesting co-existing substances in the determination of DNA were also examined

    Multicolor Combinatorial Probe Coding for Real-Time PCR

    The target volume of multiplex real-time PCR assays is limited by the number of fluorescent dyes available and the number of fluorescence acquisition channels present in the PCR instrument. We hereby explored a probe labeling strategy that significantly increased the target volume of real-time PCR detection in one reaction. The labeling paradigm, termed “Multicolor Combinatorial Probe Coding” (MCPC), uses a limited number (n) of differently colored fluorophores in various combinations to label each probe, enabling one of 2n-1 genetic targets to be detected in one reaction. The proof-of-principle of MCPC was validated by identification of one of each possible 15 human papillomavirus types, which is the maximum target number theoretically detectable by MCPC with a 4-color channel instrument, in one reaction. MCPC was then improved from a one-primer-pair setting to a multiple-primer-pair format through Homo-Tag Assisted Non-Dimer (HAND) system to allow multiple primer pairs to be included in one reaction. This improvement was demonstrated via identification of one of the possible 10 foodborne pathogen candidates with 10 pairs of primers included in one reaction, which had limit of detection equivalent to the uniplex PCR. MCPC was further explored in detecting combined genotypes of five β-globin gene mutations where multiple targets were co-amplified. MCPC strategy could expand the scope of real-time PCR assays in applications which are unachievable by current labeling strategy

    Luminescent Organic–Inorganic Hybrids of Functionalized Mesoporous Silica SBA-15 by Thio-Salicylidene Schiff Base

    Novel organic–inorganic mesoporous luminescent hybrid material N, N′-bis(salicylidene)-thiocarbohydrazide (BSTC-SBA-15) has been obtained by co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate and the organosilane in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as a template. N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-thiocarbohydrazide (BSTC) grafted to the coupling agent 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl isocyanate (TESPIC) was used as the precursor for the preparation of mesoporous materials. In addition, for comparison, SBA-15 doped with organic ligand BSTC was also synthesized, denoted as BSTC/SBA-15. This organic–inorganic hybrid material was well-characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and photoluminescence spectra, which reveals that they all have high surface area, uniformity in the mesostructure. The resulting materials (BSTC-SBA-15 and BSTC/SBA-15) exhibit regular uniform microstructures, and no phase separation happened for the organic and the inorganic compounds was covalently linked through Si–O bonds via a self-assemble process. Furthermore, the two materials have different luminescence range: BSTC/SBA-15 presents the strong dominant green luminescence, while BSTC-functionalized material BSTC-SBA-15 shows the dominant blue emission
