Photonic integrated circuits for data read-out systems

    Get PDF
We propose and design two photonic integrated circuits which can be used in a data read-out system. The designs are developed for use in a neutrino detector but the principle is applicable to a wider range of read-out systems. The first one is an optical serializer integrated with electro-optical modulators and semiconductor optical amplifiers and operates at a single wavelength. The second one employs a wavelength-division-multiplexing scheme and utilizes arrayed waveguide gratings, electro-optical modulators and semiconductor optical amplifiers

    Integrated multi-wavelength lasers : a design study

    Get PDF
Multi-wavelength lasers (MWLs) play an important role in wavelength division multiplexing networks, and also in photonic radar beam steering applications. In this paper we study different options for realizing such lasers, monolithically integrated with radio frequency (RF) modulators that can be modulated up to 40 GHz. Configurations of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG)-based MWLs integrated with Mach-Zehnder modulators are discussed. Depending on the application, they can have spatially separated modulated outputs or the modulated signals can be multiplexed onto a common output. A novel configuration, that exploits the reflection and transmission properties of on-chip reflectors is presented.

Characterization of integrated electro-optically tunable cascaded filters for tunable laser purposes

    Get PDF
In this contribution we present our results on the tunable arrayed waveguide gratings designed and fabricated to be used in a tunable ring laser structure in the 1600 to 1800nm range. To be able to tune the two cascaded filters over 100 to 200nm the wavelength dependent phase shifting in the phase shifters have been measured. With the knowledge of the wavelength dependency in the phase shifters we are able to tune the AWG over the full wavelength range

On-chip mode-locked laser diode structure using multimode interference reflectors

    Get PDF
We report, for the first time to our knowledge, an on-chip mode-locked laser diode (OCMLLD) that employs multimode interference reflectors to eliminate the need of facet mirrors to form the cavity. The result is an OCMLLD that does not require cleaved facets to operate, enabling us to locate this OCMLLD at any location within the photonic chip. This OCMLLD provides a simple source of optical pulses that can be inserted within a photonic integrated circuit chip for subsequent photonic signal processing operations within the chip (modulation, optical filtering, pulse rate multiplication, and so on). The device was designed using standardized building blocks of a generic active/passive InP technology platform, fabricated in a multi-project wafer run, and achieved mode-locking operation at its fundamental frequency, given the uncertainty at the design step of the optical length of these mirrors, critical to achieve colliding pulse mode-locked operation. © 2014 Chinese Laser Pres

Irradiation tests on InP based Mach Zehnder modulator

    Get PDF
Particle detectors in High Energy Physics experiments contain various types of mixed-signal integrated circuits and demand data rates of multiple Gigabits per second per chip and several Terabits per second for the whole detector. Optical transmission by external modulation of a continuous wave laser is a possible solution to solve the problem of high data rates. The detectors have to operate in a high radiation environment and particles passing through the circuits alter the properties of the circuits giving rise to performance issues. In this paper, we investigate the radiation hardness performance of Indium Phosphide (InP) based Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZM). The modulator circuit has been irradiated with a 24 GeV/c proton beam at CERN up to various fluences. The irradiated samples have been characterized and compared against measurements of non-irradiated devices. Also, a design of an optical integrated circuit using the Generic Integration philosophy is presented
