    Design of One-Coincidence Frequency Hopping Sequence Sets for FHMA Systems

    Department of Electrical EngineeringIn the thesis, we discuss frequency hopping multiple access (FHMA) systems and construction of optimal frequency hopping sequence and applications. Moreover, FHMA is widely used in modern communication systems such as Bluetooth, ultrawideband (UWB), military, etc. For these systems, it is desirable to employ frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) having low Hamming correlation in order to reduce the multiple-access interference. In general, optimal FHSs with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound do not always exist for all lengths and frequency set sizes. Therefore, it is an important problem to verify whether an optimal FHS with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound exists or not for a given length and a given frequency set size. I constructed FHS satisfying optimal with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound and Peng-Fan bound for efficiency of available frequency. Parameters of a new OC-FHS set are length p^2-p over Z_(p^2 ) by using a primitive element of Z_p. The new OC-FHS set with H_a (X)=0 and H_c (X)=1 can be applied to several recent applications using ISM band (e.g. IoT) based on BLE and Zigbee. In the construction and theorem, I used these mathematical back grounds in preliminaries (i.e., finite field, primitive element, primitive polynomial, frequency hopping sequence, multiple frequency shift keying, DS/CDMA) in order to prove mathematically. The outline of thesis is as follows. In preliminaries, we explain algorithm for minimal polynomial for sequence, linear complexities, Hamming correlation and bounds for FHSs and some applications are presented. In section ???, algorithm for complexity, correlation and bound for FHSs and some applications are presented. In section ???, using information in section ??? and ???, a new construction of OC-FHS is presented. In order to prove the optimality of FHSs, all cases of Hamming autocorrelation and Hamming cross-correlation are mathematically calculated. Moreover, in order to raise data rate or the number of users, a new method is presented. Using this method, sequences are divided into two times of length and satisfies Lempel-Greenberger bound and Peng-Fan bound.clos

    With the rapid growth and development of barrier islands, understanding the long-term stability of these islands is an integral part of future coastal planning. The overwash process is the largest influence on the long-term stability of these islands and thus a corresponding understanding is of major importance. A laboratory experiment was undertaken to physically model the wave and current forcing as they pertain to the overwash process. The physical model was subjected to various storm conditions common to the occurrence of the overwash. Combinations of wave height, wave period, and overwash depth were tested in an attempt to isolate the significant parameters. Water surface gradients were also applied to observe their influence on the overwash process. Wave height, current, and bed profile measurements were taken at different locations throughout the tank. In addition, wave height transformation modeling and mean current prediction were performed and compared to the laboratory results in an attempt to model the overwash process through computer simulations.     Primary Candida guilliermondii Infection of the Knee in a Patient without Predisposing Factors

    Isolated primary candidal infection of joint is extremely rare, with only a few reported cases. It occurs as a result of accidental implantations of fungus during traumatic procedures, such as surgery, and is usually reported in patients with predisposing factors such as immunosuppression, malignancy, and drug abuse. If left untreated, irreversible deformity and pain with severe osteoarticular destruction occur. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment are important. This paper presents a case of 72-year-old man with primary C. guilliermondii infection of knee joint without predisposing factors and previous traumatic procedures, who was misdiagnosed with advanced degenerative osteoarthritis. Our case is the second case of primary C. guilliermondii arthritis of knee to be reported in the English-language literature and the first to be successfully treated with total knee arthroplasty following IV amphotericin B and oral fluconazole. Primary candidal infection of joint is generally asymptomatic or involves only mild pain and swelling in the affected knee. Thus, although the majority of knee joint infections are of a pyogenic or tuberculous origin, if a patient complains of mild pain and swelling in the knee and has mild signs of infection, the possibility of fungal infection should be considered

    PIP-EL: A New Ensemble Learning Method for Improved Proinflammatory Peptide Predictions

    Proinflammatory cytokines have the capacity to increase inflammatory reaction and play a central role in first line of defence against invading pathogens. Proinflammatory inducing peptides (PIPs) have been used as an antineoplastic agent, an antibacterial agent and a vaccine in immunization therapies. Due to the advancement in sequence technologies that resulted an avalanche of protein sequence data. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automated computational method to enable fast and accurate identification of novel PIPs within the vast number of candidate proteins and peptides. To address this, we proposed a new predictor, PIP-EL, for predicting PIPs using the strategy of ensemble learning (EL). Our benchmarking dataset is imbalanced. Thus, we applied a random under-sampling technique to generate 10 balanced models for each composition. Technically, PIP-EL is the fusion of 50 independent random forest (RF) models, where each of the five different compositions, including amino acid, dipeptide, composition–transition–distribution, physicochemical properties, and amino acid index contains 10 RF models. PIP-EL achieves the Matthews’ correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.435 in a 5-fold cross-validation test, which is ~2–5% higher than that of the individual classifiers and hybrid feature-based classifier. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of PIP-EL on the independent dataset, showing that our method outperforms the existing method and two different machine learning methods developed in this study, with an MCC of 0.454. These results indicate that PIP-EL will be a useful tool for predicting PIPs and for researchers working in the field of peptide therapeutics and immunotherapy.     Shape optimization of an autonomous underwater vehicle with a ducted propeller using computational fluid dynamics analysis

    ABSTRACTAutonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) provide a useful means of collecting detailed oceano-graphic information. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the power requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper describes a procedure using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for determining the hull resistance of an AUV under development, for a given propeller rotation speed and within a given range of AUV velocities. The CFD analysis results reveal the distribution of the hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) around the AUV hull and its ducted propeller. The paper then proceeds to present a methodology for optimizing the AUV profile in order to reduce the total resistance. This paper demonstrates that shape optimization of conceptual designs is possible using the commercial CFD package contained in Ansys™. The optimum design to minimize the drag force of the AUV was identified for a given object function and a set of constrained design parameters

    Delayed surgical intervention in central cord syndrome with cervical stenosis

    Study Design Review of the literature. Objective It is generally accepted that surgical treatment is necessary for central cord syndrome (CCS) with an underlying cervical stenosis. However, the surgical timing for decompression is controversial in spondylotic cervical CCS. The purpose of this study is to review the results of early and delayed surgery in patients with spondylotic cervical CCS. Methods MEDLINE was searched for English-language articles on CCS. There were 1,653 articles from 1940 to 2012 regarding CCS, 5 of which dealt with the timing of surgery for spondylotic cervical CCS. Results All five reports regarding the surgical timing of spondylotic cervical CCS were retrospective. Motor improvement, functional independence measures, and walking ability showed similar improvement in early and late surgery groups in the studies with follow-up longer than 1 year. However, greater improvement was seen in the early surgery group in the studies with follow-up shorter than 1 year. The complication rates did not show a difference between the early and late surgery groups. However, there are controversies regarding the length of intensive care unit stay or hospital stay for the two groups. Conclusions There was no difference in motor improvement, functional independence, walking ability, and complication rates between early and late surgery for spondylotic cervical CCS

    Ultraviolet photodepletion spectroscopy of dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether complexes with alkali metal cations

    Ultraviolet photodepletion spectra of dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether complexes with alkali metal cations (M+-DB18C6, M = Cs, Rb, K, Na, and Li) were obtained in the gas phase using electrospray ionization quadrupole ion-trap reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The spectra exhibited a few distinct absorption bands in the wavenumber region of 35450−37800 cm^(−1). The lowest-energy band was tentatively assigned to be the origin of the S_0-S_1 transition, and the second band to a vibronic transition arising from the “benzene breathing” mode in conjunction with symmetric or asymmetric stretching vibration of the bonds between the metal cation and the oxygen atoms in DB18C6. The red shifts of the origin bands were observed in the spectra as the size of the metal cation in M^+-DB18C6 increased from Li^+ to Cs^+. We suggested that these red shifts arose mainly from the decrease in the binding energies of larger-sized metal cations to DB18C6 at the electronic ground state. These size effects of the metal cations on the geometric and electronic structures, and the binding properties of the complexes at the S_0 and S_1 states were further elucidated by theoretical calculations using density functional and time-dependent density functional theories
