NMR study on the stability of the magnetic ground state in MnCrO
The canting angles and fluctuation of the magnetic ion spins of spinel oxide
MnCrO were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at low
temperatures, which has a collinear ferrimagnetic order below and a
ferrimagnetic spiral order below . Contrary to previous reports,
only one spin canting angle of Cr ions was observed. The spin canting angles of
Mn and Cr ions in the ferrimagnetic spiral obtained at a liquid-He temperature
were 43\,^{\circ} and 110\,^{\circ}, respectively. The nuclear spin-spin
relaxation was determined by the Suhl-Nakamura interaction at low temperatures
but the relaxation rate increases rapidly as the temperature
approaches . This indicates that the fluctuation of the spiral component
becomes faster as the temperature increases but not fast enough to leave an
averaged hyperfine field to nuclei in the time scale of nuclear spin precession
in the ferrimagnetic phase, which is on the order of s. The spiral
volume fraction measured for various temperatures reveals that the collinear
and the spiral ferrimagnetic phases are mixed below the transition temperature
of the spiral order. The temperature hysteresis in the volume fraction implies
that this transition has first-order characteristics.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Fighting Abuse while Promoting Free Speech: Policies to Reduce Opinion Manipulation in Online Platforms
With the rise of misinformation epidemic, this study aims to empirically investigate the consequences of an online commenting platform’s activity-capping policy on abusers’ and regular users’ activities. Utilizing a quasi-experimental setting, we find that restrictive policies not only curtail the activity of the abusers, but also promote the activity of regular users. Results show that the policy has asymmetric effect on abusers and regular users— while it effectively reduces the actions of the malicious users by 1.8%, it promotes the activities of the regular users by 2.2%. To better understand the behavioral change of the regular users, we draw from the rational economic perspective of voting decisions and provide initial evidence that such policy measures reinforce the subjective probability of being influential on the outcome. This study will provide valuable implications to managers and policy makers to estimate the consequences of and to combat against malicious behaviors in online platforms
Orbital selective Fermi surface shifts and mechanism of high T superconductivity in correlated AFeAs (A=Li,Na)
Based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and angle resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the mechanism of high
superconductivity in stoichiometric LiFeAs. The calculated spectrum is in
excellent agreement with the observed ARPES measurement. The Fermi surface (FS)
nesting, which is predicted in the conventional density functional theory
method, is suppressed due to the orbital-dependent correlation effect with the
DMFT method. We have shown that such marginal breakdown of the FS nesting is an
essential condition to the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity, while
the good FS nesting in NaFeAs induces a spin density wave ground state. Our
results indicate that fully charge self-consistent description of the
correlation effect is crucial in the description of the FS nesting-driven
instabilities.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supporting informatio
A Spoken Dialogue Analysis Platform for Effective Counselling
This paper proposes a spoken dialogue analysis platform (SDAP) that could assist counsellors in person-to-person counselling by analysing counselling conversations and providing key information that could enhance the counsellors\u27 understanding of the counselees\u27 conditions and situations. The proposed platform has two main modules: a speech recognition module and a text analysis module that are specifically built for the Korean language. The speech recognition module uses NAVER CLOVA Speech service to convert voice recordings of counselling dialogues into text. The Korean text analysis environment of the text analysis module was built using NLTK, KoNLPy and scikit-learn library, and, for now, the module provides two types of text analysis: keyword analysis and sentiment analysis. The results of the text analyses that provide keywords and analysis of customers\u27 emotional state can help counsellors to provide appropriate feedback to the counselees easily and more quickly, making the counselling fast and effective and reducing the counselees\u27 waiting time. In the experiments, the text analysis module building process is elaborated in detail, and the usefulness of the proposed SDAP is exemplified by case studies on actual counselling conversations at a dental clinic and a fitness centre
Benthic invertebrate fauna in the islets of Namuseom and Bukhyeongjeseom off Busan
AbstractThis study was conducted to examine the benthic invertebrate fauna inhabiting in the subtidal zone in and around the islets of Namuseom and Bukhyeongjeseom off the coast of Busan by SCUBA diving in September 2013. As a consequence, it was confirmed that a total of 6 phyla, 14 classes, 20 orders, 46 families, and 73 species of zoobenthos inhabit in and around those islets. The total number of species surveyed by taxon during the study is 22 species of Arthropoda (30%), 20 species of Mollusca (27%), 15 species of Cnidaria (21%), 10 species of Echinodermata (14%), four species of Poridera (5%), and two species of Chordata
Piceatannol, Natural Polyphenolic Stilbene, Inhibits Adipogenesis via Modulation of Mitotic Clonal Expansion and Insulin Receptor-dependent Insulin Signaling in Early Phase of Differentiation
Piceatannol, a natural stilbene, is an analog and a metabolite of resveratrol. Despite a well documented health benefit of resveratrol in intervention of the development of obesity, the role of piceatannol in the development of adipose tissue and related diseases is unknown. Here, we sought to determine the function of piceatannol in adipogenesis and elucidate the underlying mechanism. We show that piceatannol inhibits adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a dose-dependent manner at noncytotoxic concentrations. This anti-adipogenic property of piceatannol was largely limited to the early event of adipogenesis. In the early phase of adipogenesis, piceatannol-treated preadipocytes displayed a delayed cell cycle entry into G2/M phase at 24 h after initiation of adipogenesis. Furthermore, the piceatannol-suppressed mitotic clonal expansion was accompanied by reduced activation of the insulin-signaling pathway. Piceatannol dose-dependently inhibited differentiation mixture-induced phosphorylation of insulin receptor (IR)/insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1)/Akt pathway in the early phase of adipogenesis. Moreover, we showed that piceatannol is an inhibitor of IR kinase activity and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Our kinetics study of IR further identified a Km value for ATP of 57.8 μm and a Ki value for piceatannol of 28.9 μm. We also showed that piceatannol directly binds to IR and inhibits IR kinase activity in a mixed noncompetitive manner to ATP, through which piceatannol appears to inhibit adipogenesis. Taken together, our study reveals an anti-adipogenic function of piceatannol and highlights IR and its downstream insulin signaling as novel targets for piceatannol in the early phase of adipogenesis
Realization of giant magnetoelectricity in helimagnets
We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets
Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution
level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric
polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME
susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at
an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the
octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of
magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME
characteristics
