Enhancing quantum entanglement for continuous variables by a coherent superposition of photon subtraction and addition

    Get PDF
We investigate how the entanglement properties of a two-mode state can be improved by performing a coherent superposition operation of photon subtraction and addition, proposed by Lee and Nha [Phys. Rev. A 82, 053812 (2010)], on each mode. We show that the degree of entanglement, the EPR-type correlation, and the performance of quantum teleportation can be all enhanced for the output state when the coherent operation is applied to a two-mode squeezed state. The effects of the coherent operation are more prominent than those of the mere photon subtraction and the addition particularly in the small squeezing regime, whereas the optimal operation becomes the photon subtraction in the large-squeezing regime.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, published versio

    Empathy as the Moral Sense?

    Get PDF
In his recent work, Michael Slote argues that empathy is what Hutcheson called 'the moral sense'. The most innovative argument he offers for this claim is that our empathic reactions play a crucial role in fixing the reference of moral terms. I argue that Slote's bold proposal faces all the main problems of analytical naturalism, as well as some of its own. I suggest that empathy may nevertheless play a more modest and indirect role in acquiring moral knowledge

Charge density functional plus UU calculation of lacunar spinel GaM4_4Se8_8 (M = Nb, Mo, Ta, and W)

Charge density functional plus UU calculations are carried out to examine the validity of molecular JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 and 3/2 state in lacunar spinel GaM4_4X8_8 (M = Nb, Mo, Ta, and W). With LDA (spin-unpolarized local density approximation)+U+U, which has recently been suggested as the more desirable choice than LSDA (local spin density approximation)+U+U, we examine the band structure in comparison with the previous prediction based on the spin-polarized version of functional and with the prototypical JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 material Sr2_2IrO4_4. It is found that the previously suggested JeffJ_\text{eff}=1/2 and 3/2 band characters remain valid still in LDA+U+U calculations while the use of charge-only density causes some minor differences. Our result provides the further support for the novel molecular JeffJ_\text{eff} state in this series of materials, which can hopefully motivate the future exploration toward its verification and the further search for new functionalities

Enhanced electrochemical properties of fluoride-coated LiCoO2 thin films

The electrochemical properties of fluoride-coated lithium cobalt oxide [LiCoO2] thin films were characterized. Aluminum fluoride [AlF3] and lanthanum fluoride [LaF3] coating layers were fabricated on a pristine LiCoO2 thin film by using a spin-coating process. The AlF3- and LaF3-coated films exhibited a higher rate capability, cyclic performance, and stability at high temperature than the pristine film. This indicates that the AlF3 and LaF3 layers effectively protected the surface of the pristine LiCoO2 film from the reactive electrolyte

Acquisition performance of Gold sequence-based DS-CDMA systems

The performance of sequence acquisition for Gold sequence based DS-CDMA systems is studied in this paper. We consider the use of a sliding correlator-type structure for the acquisition scheme. Since acquisition of a IN sequence in DS-CDMA systems can be formulated as testing two simple hypotheses, we apply fixed sample size (FSS) for the synchronization test. The acquisition schemes require the knowledge of the partial correlation of Gold sequences, which is diffcult to model. We propose the use of an approximate upper bound and then further linearize it for ease of designing the test scheme. The acquisition performance of Gold sequeince based DS-CDMA systems is analyzed and is compared to that of m-sequence based ones. Numerical results indicate that the use of Gold sequences is very suitable for DS-CDMA systems. In addition, analytical results are verified by computer simulation
