Topological Structure of Dense Hadronic Matter
We present a summary of work done on dense hadronic matter, based on the
Skyrme model, which provides a unified approach to high density, valid in the
large limit. In our picture, dense hadronic matter is described by the
{\em classical} soliton configuration with minimum energy for the given baryon
number density. By incorporating the meson fluctuations on such ground state we
obtain an effective Lagrangian for meson dynamics in a dense medium. Our
starting point has been the Skyrme model defined in terms of pions, thereafter
we have extended and improved the model by incorporating other degrees of

Education of History of Medicine for 80 Years: History and Current Status in Republic of Korea
Medical history education enables the medical students to understand the humanistic aspects of medicine and also help to promote the professionalism of doctors. It makes them understand the disappearing or emerging diseases by recognizing the historical changes and trends to respond appropriately. Therefore, it is helpful to study and understand modern medicine.As of March 2023, 22 (55.0%) out of 40 medical schools in Republic of Korea have medical history course as an independent subject and two schools have integrated courses with medical ethics. Compared to 53.1% in 1995 and 56.2% in 2010, similar percentage of medical schools maintained the subject independently. However, the average credits of 18 schools in 2023(2.0) are higher than those of 1995(1.4) and 2010(1.2).The number of full-time professor who specialized in the history of medicine was 2 in 1995, 6 in 2010, and 11 in 2023. Generally, a full-time professor majoring medical history tend to have other duties besides the education and research of medical history, depending on the role of the department to which he or she belongs since they are assigned to the humanities education other than medical history education.Currently, the curriculums that have been recommended by Korea Association of Medical Colleges(KAMC), Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation(KIMEE), and The Korean Society of Medical Education(KSMED), emphasize medical humanities but do not necessarily include the medical history. As a result, medical history courses have increased slightly, but the other humanities classes have increased significantly since 2000.The knowledge of medical history will help students become a doctor, and a doctor with professionalism adapting to the rapidly changing medical environment. Students will also be able to establish the ideas they must pursue in the present era when they come into contact with numerous historical situations. And if they share a sense of history, they will inspire a sense of unity as a profession and will be more active in solving social problems such as health equity.It is hoped that The Korean Society for the History of Medicine will step forward to set the purpose and goal of the medical history education, and organize the contents of the education. Classes should be prepared so that students are interested in them, and education should be focused on how the contents of education will be able to be used in medicine. To this end, it is necessary to establish the basic learning outcomes of history of medicine, and prepare learning materials based on these learning outcomes. It is also necessary to increase the competencies of educators for the history of medicine, such as performing workshops.With the dedication of the pioneers who devoted their energy to the education of medical history, it is expected that medical history will find out what to do in medical education to foster better doctors and provide better education
Miniaturized ISFET Glucose Sensor Including a New Structure Actuation System
A new principle of an amperometric actuation technique was incorporated in the ISFET glucose sensor. The ISFET is fabricated by the CMOS process and the platinum working electrode is deposited by the lift-off process. A sensor with a specially designed ladder type working electrode exhibits improved operation in response time, response magnitude and detection range. An expectation concerning the reduction of sensor size is also discussed
Volumetric Lung Nodule Segmentation using Adaptive ROI with Multi-View Residual Learning
Accurate quantification of pulmonary nodules can greatly assist the early
diagnosis of lung cancer, which can enhance patient survival possibilities. A
number of nodule segmentation techniques have been proposed, however, all of
the existing techniques rely on radiologist 3-D volume of interest (VOI) input
or use the constant region of interest (ROI) and only investigate the presence
of nodule voxels within the given VOI. Such approaches restrain the solutions
to investigate the nodule presence outside the given VOI and also include the
redundant structures into VOI, which may lead to inaccurate nodule
segmentation. In this work, a novel semi-automated approach for 3-D
segmentation of nodule in volumetric computerized tomography (CT) lung scans
has been proposed. The proposed technique can be segregated into two stages, at
the first stage, it takes a 2-D ROI containing the nodule as input and it
performs patch-wise investigation along the axial axis with a novel adaptive
ROI strategy. The adaptive ROI algorithm enables the solution to dynamically
select the ROI for the surrounding slices to investigate the presence of nodule
using deep residual U-Net architecture. The first stage provides the initial
estimation of nodule which is further utilized to extract the VOI. At the
second stage, the extracted VOI is further investigated along the coronal and
sagittal axis with two different networks and finally, all the estimated masks
are fed into the consensus module to produce the final volumetric segmentation
of nodule. The proposed approach has been rigorously evaluated on the LIDC
dataset, which is the largest publicly available dataset. The result suggests
that the approach is significantly robust and accurate as compared to the
previous state of the art techniques.Comment: The manuscript is currently under review and copyright shall be

Treatment of Surgical Site Infection in Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion
Study DesignA retrospective observational and case control study.PurposeTo identify appropriate treatment options according to the types of surgical site infections (SSI) in instrumented posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF).Overview of LiteratureThere has been no agreement or consensus with regard to this matter.MethodsThirty-two consecutive SSIs were included and followed for more than one year. The elapsed time to diagnosis (ETD) according to the type of SSI was analyzed. The treatment options for each type and consequent clinical results were reviewed. The risk factors of removing the implants were analyzed.ResultsThere were 6/32 (19%) superficial incisional, 6/32 (19%) deep incisional, and 20/32 (62%) organ/space infection cases (SII, DII, and O/SI, respectively) (p=0.002). ETD was 8.5±2.3 days in SII, 8.7±2.3 days in DII, and 164.5±131.1 days in O/SI (p=0.013). All cases of SII and DII retained implants and were treated by repeated irrigation and secondary closure. Among O/SIs, 10/20 were treated conservatively. Nine out of ten underwent posterior one stage simultaneous revision (POSSR) and in one case, the cage was removed anteriorly. Those who had ETDs longer than 3 months showed a significant risk of implant removal (p=0.008, odds ratio [OR]=40.3). The Oswestry disability index (ODI) improved from 47.3% to 33.8% in SII, from 55.0% to 32.3% in DII, and from 53.4% to 42.1% in O/SI (p=0.002). There was no difference among the three groups (p=0.106); however, there was a partial correlation between ETD and final ODI (r=0.382, p=0.034).ConclusionsLatent O/SI was the most common type of SSI in PLIF. In cases of SII and DII, early aggressive wound management and secondary closure was effective and implant removal was not necessary. In some cases of O/SI, implant removal was unavoidable. However, implant removal could be averted by an earlier diagnosis. POSSR was feasible and safe. Functional outcomes were improved; however, disability increased as ETD increased
