    The Role of Soft Skills in Promoting Effective Communication and Cooperation among Students in a Multicultural Classroom Environment

    This study was conducted to examine the importance of soft skills in promoting successful communication and cooperation among students in a multicultural classroom environment. Soft skills, including effective communication, active listening, empathy, and teamwork play an important role in building positive relationships and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Through the study of documents and the results of interviews with 12 students from 8 universities in Hanoi, the research results demonstrate that students who actively participate in the development of soft skills demonstrate a greater level of awareness and appreciation of their role in a multicultural environment. Based on the results of the study, a number of collaborative learning strategies, cultural exchange programs and real-world problem-solving activities are encouraged to raise students' awareness and understanding of the importance of soft skills

    Pandemic Effect on the Industry 4.0 Readiness: A Case Study in Vietnamese Industry

    The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected the global supply chain because many links in the chain have been broken or severely delayed. Different epidemic response policies from other countries also have had a significant impact on logistics activities and the operations of businesses. The considerable influence of this pandemic also has caused companies to change their strategies for risk management and apply advanced technologies to handle disruption in the future. This study explores the pandemic’s impact on the decision to apply Industry 4.0 technology in the production process using qualitative research. The leaders from 4 selected manufacturing firms were interviewed with open-end questions and thematic and cross-case analyses were applied to analyze their strategic orientation to use Industry 4.0 technology in their businesses during and after COVID-19. The results show that COVID-19 influenced the decision to implement Industry 4.0 technology in international and local companies within the global market. In contrast, the pandemic has not affected the decision to implement Industry 4.0 technology in a local company with a local market. The following policy recommendations are based on these findings. The government should establish a policy to provide vital support to local SMEs because their employee capability is too low to implement Industry 4.0 technology and deal with the pandemic crisis. Moreover, executive training for giving essential knowledge for Industry 4.0 should be provided to the owners of SMEs

    Cloning and expression of gene FanC-2NT encoding K99-2NT fimbrial antigen of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli from diarrheic post-weaning piglets

    Background and Purpose: The K99 (F5) is one pilus adhesin that mediates the attachment of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) strains to small intestines to cause to diarrhea in piglets, lambs and newborn calves. In this work, we carried out cloning and expression of the mature peptide of FanC subunit, K99 fimbriae, one of the most common adhesive antigens in E. coli. Materials and Methods: E. coli 2NT strain was isolated from fecal samples of post-weaning piglets with diarrhea. The coding sequence of the mature peptide of K99-2NT subunit was isolated by PCR amplification and cloned into pGEMÂź-T Easy vector for sequencing using fluorescent dideoxy-terminator method. Expression of K99-2NT protein which was inserted into pET200/D-TOPO vector induced with IPTG. The PCR product and expression level of protein was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, respectively. Results and Conclusions: We cloned and expressed successfully the mature peptide of K99 subunit with molecular weight of approximately 17.5 kDa from E. coli 2NT strain (named K99-2NT). Nucleotide sequence of the K99-2NT subunit coding region of fanC-2NT gene is 477 bp in length and is 99% similarity with that of fanC gene (accession no: M35282). Highest expression level occurred after 12 h of induction with 0.75 mM IPTG at 37oC. This subunit antigen will be tested for immune response of rat in the next time

    Effect of Molecular Charge Asymmetry on Even-to-odd Ratio of High-order Harmonic Generation

    Recently, asymmetric molecules, such as HeH2+_2^+, CO, OCS, HCl, have been evolved much attention since its rich information in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG), whose ratio of adjacent even and odd harmonics characterizes the asymmetry of molecules. In this paper, we study the dependence of even-to-odd ratio on the asymmetric parameters, in particular, the nuclear-charge ratio, and the permanent dipole, by exploiting a simple but general model of asymmetric molecules Z1Z2Z_1Z_2 subjected to an intense laser pulse. The HHG is simulated by the numerical method of solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We find out that this even-to-odd ratio strongly depends on the nuclear-charge ratio. In particular, the even-to-odd ratio reaches its maximum when the nuclear-charge ratio is about from 0.5 to 0.7. Besides, the dependence on the permanent dipole of the even-to-odd ratio has a non-trivial law. To explain, we calculate the analytical ratio of the transition dipole according to the emission of even and odd harmonics, and this ratio is well consistent with the even-to-odd ratio of the HHG

    Characterization and utilization of pulp and paper mill sludge digesting thermophilic bacteria in composting process

    Pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS) was found to be poorly colonised with thermophilic microorganisms. However, evidence to support the need for inoculation to facilitate PPMS composting has only been demonstrated in one instance. In this study, we aimed to: screen and identify PPMS digesting thermophilic bacterial strains; investigate effects of the mixture of selected thermophilic bacterial strains on PPMS digestion; and utilize this mixture as start inoculum in PPMS composting and assess the quality of compost product. The results showed that eleven thermophilic bacterial strains were isolated from Bai Bang PPMS by the enrichment culture method. Among these, three strains which reflected high growth rates on the plates of Minimal Media Agar supplemented with Bai Bang PPMS and showed hydrolytic and ligninolytic activities on the agar plates containing appropriate inductive substrates were selected. Based on the morphological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, they were identified as Bacillus subtilis. The inoculation with the mixture of selected strains enhanced remarkably Bai Bang PPMS digestion. The dry weight decrease, volatile suspended solids removal, dehydrogenase and protease activities in the inoculated sludge were 2.1-, 1.5-, 1.3- and 1.2- fold higher, respectively, compared to the non-inoculated sludge. The assessment of compost quality based on stability using the alkaline trap method and maturity using the germination and root elongation test showed that the inoculated compost was stable and mature while the non-inoculated compost was unstable and immature. These thermophilic bacterial strains therefore have great potential for Bai Bang PPMS composting

    Microscopic Observation Drug Susceptibility Assay (MODS) for Early Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in Children

    MODS is a novel liquid culture based technique that has been shown to be effective and rapid for early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). We evaluated the MODS assay for diagnosis of TB in children in Viet Nam. 217 consecutive samples including sputum (n = 132), gastric fluid (n = 50), CSF (n = 32) and pleural fluid (n = 3) collected from 96 children with suspected TB, were tested by smear, MODS and MGIT. When test results were aggregated by patient, the sensitivity and specificity of smear, MGIT and MODS against “clinical diagnosis” (confirmed and probable groups) as the gold standard were 28.2% and 100%, 42.3% and 100%, 39.7% and 94.4%, respectively. The sensitivity of MGIT and MODS was not significantly different in this analysis (P = 0.5), but MGIT was more sensitive than MODS when analysed on the sample level using a marginal model (P = 0.03). The median time to detection of MODS and MGIT were 8 days and 13 days, respectively, and the time to detection was significantly shorter for MODS in samples where both tests were positive (P<0.001). An analysis of time-dependent sensitivity showed that the detection rates were significantly higher for MODS than for MGIT by day 7 or day 14 (P<0.001 and P = 0.04), respectively.     Development of a highly sensitive point‐of‐care test for African swine fever that combines EZ‐Fast DNA extraction with LAMP detection: Evaluation using naturally infected swine whole blood samples from Vietnam

    [Background] While early detection and early containment are key to controlling the African swine fever (ASF) pandemic, the lack of practical testing methods for use in the field are a major barrier to achieving this feat. [Objectives] To describe the development of a rapid and sensitive point-of-care test (POCT) for ASF, and its evaluation using swine whole blood samples for field settings. [Methods] In total, 89 swine whole blood samples were collected from Vietnamese swine farms and were performed the POCT using a combination of crude DNA extraction and LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) amplification. [Results] The POCT enabled crude DNA to be extracted from swine whole blood samples within 10 min at extremely low cost and with relative ease. The entire POCT required a maximum of 50 min from the beginning of DNA extraction to final judgment. Compared to a conventional real-time PCR detection, the POCT showed a 1 log reduction in detection sensitivity, but comparable diagnostic sensitivity of 100% (56/56) and diagnostic specificity of 100% (33/33). The POCT was quicker and easier to perform and did not require special equipment. [Conclusions] This POCT is expected to facilitate early diagnosis and containment of ASF invasion into both regions in which it is endemic and eradicated

    Rifampicin resistant 'Mycobacterium tuberculosis' in Vietnam, 2020–2022

    Objective: We conducted a descriptive analysis of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Vietnam’s two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. Methods: All patients with rifampicin resistant tuberculosis were recruited from Hanoi and surrounding provinces between 2020 and 2022. Additional patients were recruited from Ho Chi Minh city over the same time period. Demographic data were recorded from all patients, and samples collected, cultured, whole genome sequenced and analysed for drug resistance mutations. Genomic susceptibility predictions were made on the basis of the World Health Organization’s catalogue of mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis associated with drug resistance, version 2. Comparisons were made against phenotypic drug susceptibility test results where these were available. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess risk factors for previous episodes of tuberculosis. Results: 233/265 sequenced isolates were of sufficient quality for analysis, 146 (63 %) from Ho Chi Minh City and 87 (37 %) from Hanoi. 198 (85 %) were lineage 2, 20 (9 %) were lineage 4, and 15 (6 %) were lineage 1. 17/211 (8 %) for whom HIV status was known were infected, and 109/214 (51 %) patients had had a previous episode of tuberculosis. The main risk factor for a previous episode was HIV infection (odds ratio 5.1 (95 % confidence interval 1.3–20.0); p = 0.021). Sensitivity for predicting first-line drug resistance from whole genome sequencing data was over 90 %, with the exception of pyrazinamide (85 %). For moxifloxacin and amikacin it was 50 % or less. Among rifampicin-resistant isolates, prevalence of resistance to each non-first-line drug was < 20 %. Conclusions: Drug resistance among most MDR-TB strains in Vietnam’s two largest cities is confined largely to first-line drugs. Living with HIV is the main risk factor among patients with MDR-TB for having had a previous episode of tuberculosis

    The burden of tuberculosis in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: a spatial analysis of drug-susceptible and multi-drug resistant cases between 2020 and 2023

    We characterised the spatial distribution of drug-susceptible (DS) and multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) cases in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), a major South-East Asian metropolis, and explored demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with local TB burden. Hot spots of DS- and MDR-TB incidence were observed in the central parts of HCMC, with substantial heterogeneity observed across wards. Positive spatial autocorrelation was observed for both DS- and MDR-TB. Ward-level TB incidence was associated with HIV prevalence (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 1.77, 95% CI 1.54-2.03) and the male proportion of the population (IRR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02-1.08). No ward-level demographic and socioeconomic indicators were associated with MDR-TB case count relative to total TB case count. Our findings may inform spatially-targeted TB control strategies and provide insights for generating hypotheses about the nature of the relationship between DS- and MDR-TB in HCMC, Vietnam and the wider South-East Asia region
