Reproducibility of straylight measurement by C-Quant for assessment of retinal straylight using the compensation comparison method.
BACKGROUND: Straylight gives the appearance of a veil of light thrown over a person's retinal image when there is a strong light source present. We examined the reproducibility of the measurements by C-Quant, and assessed its correlation to characteristics of the eye and subjects' age. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Five repeated straylight measurements were taken using the dominant eye of 45 healthy subjects (age 21-59) with a BCVA of 20/20: 14 emmetropic, 16 myopic, eight hyperopic and seven with astigmatism. We assessed the extent of reproducibility of straylight measures using the intraclass correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The mean straylight value of all measurements was 1.01 (SD 0.23, median 0.97, interquartile range 0.85-1.1). Per 10Â years of age, straylight increased in average by 0.10 (95%CI 0.04 to 0.16, pâ<â0.01]. We found no independent association of refraction (range -5.25 dpt to +2 dpt) on straylight values (0.001; 95%CI -0.022 to 0.024, pâ=â0.92). Compared to emmetropic subjects, myopia reduced straylight (-.011; -0.024 to 0.02, pâ=â0.11), whereas higher straylight values (0.09; -0.01 to 0.20, pâ=â0.09) were observed in subjects with blue irises as compared to dark-colored irises when correcting for age. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of repeated measurements was 0.83 (95%CI 0.76 to 0.90). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that straylight measurements with the C-Quant had a high reproducibility, i.e. a lack of large intra-observer variability, making it appropriate to be applied in long-term follow-up studies assessing the long-term effect of surgical procedures on the quality of vision

The B-Meson Distribution Amplitude in QCD
The B-meson distribution amplitude is calculated using QCD sum rules. In
particular we obtain an estimate for the integral relevant to exclusive
B-decays \lambda_B = 460 \pm 110 MeV at the scale 1 GeV. A simple QCD-motivated

Ten-year outcomes of a randomised trial of laparoscopic versus open surgery for colon cancer
Background: Laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer is associated with improved recovery and similar cancer outcomes at 3 and 5 years in comparison with open surgery. However, long-term survival rates have rarely been reported. Here, we present survival and recurrence rates of the Dutch patients included in the COlon cancer Laparoscopic or Open Resection (COLOR) trial at 10-year follow-up.
Methods: Between March 1997 and March 2003, patients with non-metastatic colon cancer were recruited by 29 hospitals in eight countries and randomised to either laparoscopic or open surgery. Main inclusion criterion for the COLOR trial was solitary adenocarcinoma of the left or right colon. The primary outcome was disease-free survival at 3 years, and secondary outcomes included overall survival and recurrence. The 10-year follow-up data of all Dutch patients were collected. Analysis was by intention-to-treat. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00387842).
Results: In total, 1248 patients were randomised, of which 329 were Dutch. Fifty-eight Dutch patients were excluded and 15 were lost to follow-up, leaving 256 patients for 10-year analysis. Median follow-up was 112 months. Disease-free survival rates were 45.2 % in the laparoscopic group and 43.2 % in the open group (difference 2.0 %; 95 % confidence interval (CI) â10.3 to 14.3; p = 0.96). Overall survival rates were 48.4 and 46.7 %, respectively (difference 1.7 %; 95 % CI â10.6 to 14.0; p = 0.83). Stage-specific analysis revealed similar survival rates for both groups. Sixty-two patients were diagnosed with recurrent disease, accounting for 29.4 % in the laparoscopic group and 28.2 % in the open group (difference 1.2 %; 95 % CI â11.1 to 13.5; p = 0.73). Desflurane-induced and ischaemic postconditioning against myocardial infarction are mediated by Pim-1 kinase
BackgroundAnaesthetic-induced (APOST) and ischaemic postconditioning (IPOST) against myocardial infarction are mediated via phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/Akt. Pim-1 kinase is acting downstream of Akt and has recently been demonstrated to enhance cardiomyocyte survival. We tested the hypothesis that both APOST and IPOST are mediated by Pim-1 kinase.MethodsPentobarbital-anaesthetized male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to 45-min coronary artery occlusion (CAO) and 3-h reperfusion. Animals received either no intervention, the Pim-1 kinase inhibitor II (10??g/g intraperitoneally) or its vehicle dimethy sulfoxide (10??l/g intraperitoneally). Three minutes prior to the end of CAO, 1.0 minimum alveolar concentration desflurane was administered for 18?min alone or in combination with Pim-1 kinase inhibitor II. IPOST was induced by three cycles of each 10-s ischaemia/reperfusion, and animals received either IPOST alone or in combination with Pim-1 kinase inhibitor II. Infarct size was determined with triphenyltetrazolium chloride and area at risk with Evans blue. Protein expression of Pim-1 kinase, Bad, phospho-BadSer112 and B-cell lymphoma 2 was determined using Western immunoblotting analysis.ResultsInfarct size in control animals (CON) was 46?±?3%. Dimethylsulfoxide (47?±?3%) and Pim-1 kinase inhibitor II (44?±?5%) did not significantly reduce infarct size. Desflurane (16?±?2%*; *P?<?0.05 vs. CON) and IPOST (21?±?2%*) significantly reduced infarct size compared with CON. Inhibition of Pim-1 kinase abolished desflurane-induced postconditioning (46?±?4%) and IPOST (44?±?5%). Western blot analysis revealed that only desflurane enhances phosphorylation of Bad at serine 112 that was abrogated by Pim-1 kinase inhibitor II.ConclusionThese data suggest that Pim-1 kinase mediates both desflurane-induced postconditioning and IPOST in mice
Transport properties of strongly correlated metals:a dynamical mean-field approach
The temperature dependence of the transport properties of the metallic phase
of a frustrated Hubbard model on the hypercubic lattice at half-filling are
calculated. Dynamical mean-field theory, which maps the Hubbard model onto a
single impurity Anderson model that is solved self-consistently, and becomes
exact in the limit of large dimensionality, is used. As the temperature
increases there is a smooth crossover from coherent Fermi liquid excitations at
low temperatures to incoherent excitations at high temperatures. This crossover
leads to a non-monotonic temperature dependence for the resistance,
thermopower, and Hall coefficient, unlike in conventional metals. The
resistance smoothly increases from a quadratic temperature dependence at low
temperatures to large values which can exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel value, hbar
a/e^2 (where "a" is a lattice constant) associated with mean-free paths less
than a lattice constant. Further signatures of the thermal destruction of
quasiparticle excitations are a peak in the thermopower and the absence of a
Drude peak in the optical conductivity. The results presented here are relevant
to a wide range of strongly correlated metals, including transition metal

Warsaw Breakage Syndrome associated DDX11 helicase resolves G-quadruplex structures to support sister chromatid cohesion
Warsaw Breakage Syndrome (WABS) is a rare disorder related to cohesinopathies and Fanconi anemia, caused by bi-allelic mutations in DDX11. Here, we report multiple compound heterozygous WABS cases, each displaying destabilized DDX11 protein and residual DDX11 function at the cellular level. Patient-derived cell lines exhibit sensitivity to topoisomerase and PARP inhibitors, defective sister chromatid cohesion and reduced DNA replication fork speed. Deleting DDX11 in RPE1-TERT cells inhibits proliferation and survival in a TP53-dependent manner and causes chromosome breaks and cohesion defects, independent of the expressed pseudogene DDX12p. Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the States
We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for
the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the
chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The
ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates,
r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information
on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find
r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world
average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P);
i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than

Radiative Decay Modes of the Meson
Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have searched for four
radiative decay modes of the meson: ,
, , and . We
obtain 90% CL upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of , , and
