    A class of pseudoinverse-free greedy block nonlinear Kaczmarz methods for nonlinear systems of equations

    In this paper, we construct a class of nonlinear greedy average block Kaczmarz methods to solve nonlinear problems without computing the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse. This kind of methods adopts the average technique of Gaussian Kaczmarz method and combines with the greedy strategy, which greatly reduces the amount of computation. The convergence analysis and numerical experiments of the proposed method are given. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    A sketch-and-project method for solving the matrix equation AXB = C

    In this paper, based on an optimization problem, a sketch-and-project method for solving the linear matrix equation AXB = C is proposed. We provide a thorough convergence analysis for the new method and derive a lower bound on the convergence rate and some convergence conditions including the case that the coefficient matrix is rank deficient. By varying three parameters in the new method and convergence theorems, the new method recovers an array of well-known algorithms and their convergence results. Meanwhile, with the use of Gaussian sampling, we can obtain the Gaussian global randomized Kaczmarz (GaussGRK) method which shows some advantages in solving the matrix equation AXB = C.     Influence of external heat sources on volumetric thermal errors of precision machine tools

    Volumetric accuracy is susceptible to thermal gradient caused by internal heat source (IHS) and external heat source (EHS). A temperature-structure multi-step calculation method is presented to investigate the influences of EHSs on volumetric thermal errors of precision machine tools. The temperature and structure of the machine tool are simulated first, and then, the volumetric thermal errors are calculated using multi-body theory method. Simulations are completed to study the effects of different EHSs on a machine tool, and series of validating experiments are carried out to verify the modeling method. The test results in specific position and working condition revealed that EHSs contribute 53, 21, and 68% of thermal deviations in X, Y, and Z directions individually. It is illustrated that the EHS is an important factor affecting the volumetric accuracy of precision machine tools. The methods provided in this paper are valuable for machine tool designers to evaluate the EHS effects on volumetric thermal errors during designing process; furthermore, some insulating measures are suggested to improve the accuracy and accuracy stability of precision machine tools by reducing the EHS influences

    PGC1β Regulates Breast Tumor Growth and Metastasis by SREBP1-Mediated HKDC1 Expression

    Background: Breast cancer is a very common cancer with significant premature mortality in women. In this study, we show that HKDC1 expression in breast cancer cells is increased significantly. We aim to investigate the detailed mechanism for the regulation of HKDC1 expression and its potential contribution to tumorigenesis.Methods: Gene expression was evaluated by real time PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. The mechanism for PGC1β/SREBP1-mediated HKDC1 expression was investigated using luciferase reporter assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and siRNA techniques. In addition, HKDC1 was overexpressed or knocked down by lentivirus to evaluate the potential effect on in vitro cell proliferation, glucose uptake, mitochondrial function, apoptosis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Furthermore, an in vivo xenograft tumor development study was employed to investigate the effect of HKDC1 on tumor growth and mouse survival.Results: HKDC1 is highly expressed in both breast cancer cells and clinical tumor tissues. HKDC1 expression is upregulated and co-activated by PGC1β through SREBP1 binding motif on the HKDC1 promoter. HKDC1 is located on the mitochondrial membrane and regulates the permeability transition pore opening by binding with VDAC1, subsequently modulating glucose uptake and cell proliferation. Overexpression of HKDC1 increases while knockdown of HKDC1 decreases in vitro breast cancer cell proliferation and in vivo tumor growth, metastasis, and mouse survival.Conclusions: PGC1β regulates breast cancer tumor growth and metastasis by SREBP1-mediated HKDC1 expression. This provides a novel therapeutic strategy through targeting the PGC1β/HKDC1 signaling pathway for breast cancer treatment

    Molecular typing of mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates circulating in Jiangsu Province, China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Globally, China is the second place with high burden of tuberculosis (TB). To explore the characteristics of the pathogens of <it>Mycobacterium tuberculosis </it>(MTB) circulating in this area is helpful for understanding and controlling the spread of the strains. Recent developments in molecular biology have allowed prompt identification and tracking specific strains of MTB spreading through the population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Spacer-oligonucleotide typing (spoligotyping) and mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units variable number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) were performed in combination to yield specific genetic profiles of 260 MTB strains isolated from 30 counties of Jiangsu province in China between June and July 2010. The spoligotyping results were in comparison to the world Spoligotyping Database of Institute Pasteur de Guadeloupe (SpolDB4). Drug susceptibility test (DST) was performed on all strains by proportion method on Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) culture media.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Based on the spoligotyping method, 246 strains displayed known patterns and 14 were absent in the database. Predominant spoligotypes belonged to the Beijing family (80.4%). By using the 24-loci VNTR typing scheme, 224 different patterns were identified, including 20 clusters and 204 unique patterns. The largest clade comprised 195 strains belonging to the Beijing family. The combination of spoligotyping and 24-loci MIRU-VNTR demonstrated maximal discriminatory power. Furthermore, we observed a significant association between Beijing family strains and drug-resistant phenotypes. The Beijing family strains presented increased risks for developing multi-drug resistant TB, with the OR (95% CI) of 11.07(1.45-84.50).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study demonstrated that Beijing family isolates were the most prevalent strains circulating in Jiangsu province of China. The utility of spoligotyping in combination with 24-loci MIRU-VNTR might be a useful tool for epidemiological analysis of MTB transmission.</p

    CD24 as a Molecular Marker in Ovarian Cancer: A Literature Review

Cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis offers an attractive explanation of chemoresistance, metastasis, etc., associated with the disease. However, there are still controversy and limitation in defining the CSC markers. CD24 is a mucin-type glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-linked glycoprotein, expressed on the surface of cells, which serves as a normal receptor for P-selectin and is found involved in molecular adhesion and metastatic tumor spread. Expression rate of CD24 has been associated with progression of various cancers and poor survival rates. In this review, the function of CD24 in ovarian cancer, especially in ovarian CSC system, was discussed in an effort to broaden the interpretation of potential mechanism

    Behavior of Ants Escaping from a Single-Exit Room

    <div><p>To study the rules of ant behavior and group-formation phenomena, we examined the behaviors of <i>Camponotus japonicus</i>, a species of large ant, in a range of situations. For these experiments, ants were placed inside a rectangular chamber with a single exit that also contained a filter paper soaked in citronella oil, a powerful repellent. The ants formed several groups as they moved toward the exit to escape. We measured the time intervals between individual escapes in six versions of the experiment, each containing an exit of a different width, to quantify the movement of the groups. As the ants exited the chamber, the time intervals between individual escapes changed and the frequency distribution of the time intervals exhibited exponential decay. We also investigated the relationship between the number of ants in a group and the group flow rate.</p></div

    Yb-ASE Suppression in Single-Frequency Hybrid Double Cladding Erbium–Ytterbium Co-Doped Fiber Amplifier with SMS Structure

    A hybrid double cladding erbium–ytterbium co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifier with a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) active fiber is demonstrated in this study. The hybrid gain fiber with an SMS structure is composed of two kinds of EYDFs with 6 and 12 μm core diameters. The transmission spectra of the SMS fiber structure were theoretically analyzed and the simulation results indicated that the maximum loss in the 1~1.1 μm band where the Yb-band amplified spontaneous emission (Yb-ASE) located, was much larger than that of the 1.5-μm band because of the wavelength difference. The power performance and spectra properties of the hybrid fiber amplifier were theoretically and experimentally analyzed and compared with a typical uniform fiber amplifier under the same conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that this hybrid fiber amplifier can suppress the Yb-ASE by over 12 dB and increase the slope efficiency by more than 2%, but the ASE in the 1.5-μm band increases by 2~3 dB. This work provides a possible method to enable EYDF amplifiers to suppress the Yb-ASE and overcome the pump bottleneck effect
