Hybrid Neural Networks for Frequency Estimation of Unevenly Sampled Data
In this paper we present a hybrid system composed by a neural network based
estimator system and genetic algorithms. It uses an unsupervised Hebbian
nonlinear neural algorithm to extract the principal components which, in turn,
are used by the MUSIC frequency estimator algorithm to extract the frequencies.
We generalize this method to avoid an interpolation preprocessing step and to
improve the performance by using a new stop criterion to avoid overfitting.
Furthermore, genetic algorithms are used to optimize the neural net weight
initialization. The experimental results are obtained comparing our methodology

Magnetic Exchange Couplings from Noncollinear Spin Density Functional Perturbation Theory
We propose a method for the evaluation of magnetic exchange couplings based
on noncollinear spin-density functional calculations. The method employs the
second derivative of the total Kohn-Sham energy of a single reference state, in
contrast to approximations based on Kohn-Sham total energy differences. The
advantage of our approach is twofold: It provides a physically motivated
picture of the transition from a low-spin to a high-spin state, and it utilizes
a perturbation scheme for the evaluation of magnetic exchange couplings. The
latter simplifies the way these parameters are predicted using
first-principles: It avoids the non-trivial search for different spin-states
that needs to be carried out in energy difference methods and it opens the
possibility of "black-boxifying" the extraction of exchange couplings from
density functional theory calculations. We present proof of concept
calculations of magnetic exchange couplings in the H--He--H model system and in
an oxovanadium bimetallic complex where the results can be intuitively

Polarization dependence of the third-harmonic generation in multiband superconductors
In a superconductor the third-harmonic generation (THG) of a strong THz pulse
is enhanced below Tc by the resonant excitation of lattice-modulated charge
fluctuations (LCF), which modulate the response according to the polarization
of the field. Here we compute the THG within a multiband model for the
prototype NbN superconductor. We show that the non-resonant contribution coming
from the instantaneous electronic response and the finite width of the pulse
significantly suppress the polarization dependence of the signal, challenging

IIR Adaptive Filters for Detection of Gravitational Waves from Coalescing Binaries
In this paper we propose a new strategy for gravitational waves detection
from coalescing binaries, using IIR Adaptive Line Enhancer (ALE) filters. This
strategy is a classical hierarchical strategy in which the ALE filters have the
role of triggers, used to select data chunks which may contain gravitational
events, to be further analyzed with more refined optimal techniques, like the
the classical Matched Filter Technique. After a direct comparison of the
performances of ALE filters with the Wiener-Komolgoroff optimum filters
(matched filters), necessary to discuss their performance and to evaluate the
statistical limitation in their use as triggers, we performed a series of
tests, demonstrating that these filters are quite promising both for the
relatively small computational power needed and for the robustness of the
algorithms used. The performed tests have shown a weak point of ALE filters,
that we fixed by introducing a further strategy, based on a dynamic bank of ALE
filters, running simultaneously, but started after fixed delay times. The
results of this global trigger strategy seems to be very promising, and can be
already used in the present interferometers, since it has the great advantage
of requiring a quite small computational power and can easily run in real-time,

KRAS early testing. Consensus initiative and cost-effectiveness evaluation for metastatic colorectal patients in an italian setting
KRAS testing is relevant for the choice of the most appropriate first-line therapy of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). Strategies for preventing unequal access to the test should be implemented, but their relevance in the practice is related to economic sustainability. The study adopted the Delphi technique to reach a consensus on several topics. Issues related to execution of KRAS testing were identified by an expert's board and proposed to 108 Italian oncologists and pathologists through two subsequent questionnaires. The emerging proposal was evaluated by decision analyses models employed by technology assessment agencies in order to assess cost-effectiveness. Alternative therapeutic strategies included most commonly used chemotherapy regimens alone or in combination with cetuximab or bevacizumab. The survey indicated that time interval for obtaining KRAS test should not exceed 15 days, 10 days being an optimal interval. To assure the access to proper treatment, a useful strategy should be to anticipate the test after radical resection in patients at high risk of relapse. Early KRAS testing in high risk CRC patients generates incremental cost-effectiveness ratios between 6,000 and 13,000 Euro per quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained. In extensive sensitivity analyses ICER's were always below 15,000 Euro per QALY gained, far within the threshold of 60,000 Euro/QALY gained accepted by regulatory institutions in Italy. In metastatic CRC a time interval higher than 15 days for result of KRAS testing limits access to therapeutic choices. Anticipating KRAS testing before the onset of metastatic disease in patients at high risk does not affect the sustainability and cost-effectiveness profile of cetuximab in first-line mCRC. Early KRAS testing may prevent this inequality in high-risk patients, whether they develop metastases, and is a cost-effective strategy. Based on these results, present joined recommendations of Italian societies of Oncology and Pathology should be updated including early KRAS testing
