CULTURAL TERMS TRANSLATION IN HIRATA’S LASKAR PELANGI AND THE IMPACT ON THE TRANSLATION QUALITY

This paper aims to evaluate the translation of cultural terms in English version of of the Hirata’s Laskar Pelangi. This paper investigates also the translation quality of those cultural terms. The data, in this study, are the terms of culture that exist in the novel. The finding of the cultural term is divided into five categories. It consists of ecology, material, social, organization, customs, ideas, motion and habits. Overall, translation cultural terms lead to reduce the level of acceptability and readability of the translation quality.Keywords: translation, cultural terms, laskar pelangi, rainbow troop

THE REFLECTION OF RACISM TOWARDS AFRICAN AMERICAN IN SELMA MOVIE

The purpose of this research is to find the level of racism that happened to African American as seen in Selma movie. Further, the other purpose is to give the reflection about the effect of the racism toward African-American people as depicted in the movie. This research focused to examine the racism by using Jones’ and Day’s theory about the level of racism and on how the effect of racism itself. Further, the researcher used qualitative-descriptive method and Mikos’ data analysis for the movie. In this movie, the researcher finds the three levels of racism have appeared. The racisms are institutionalized racism, personally mediated racism and internalized racism. The first level which is institutionalized racism is marked by the legitimize and systematic intimidation in voting booths. Further, this racism gives positive and negative effect.  Secondly, the personally mediated racism also appeared and it is shown by the limitedness of public access, police brutality and everyday avoidance towards black people. Thus, personally mediated racism also gives positive and negative effect. The last level of racism which appeared in this movie is internalized racism. This racism marked by the acceptance of stigma from white people to black people. Additionally, this racism only gives negative effect because it makes the victim of racism felt insecure, unworthy, and disbelief towards themselves

AN ANALYSIS OF SMEAGOL’S CHARACTER INFLUENCED BY THE ONE RING IN LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING FILM USING JUNG ARCHETYPES

Lord of the Rings: Return of The King film was adapted from a novel with the same title by J.R.R. Tolkien. This film was directed by Peter Jackson and aired in 2003. This film was a fantasy-adventure genre film. It tells the journey of the Hobbits and their friends to save Middle Earth from dark master Sauron. The purpose of this research is to find out Smeagol archetypes and how the One Ring influences Smeagol’s personality. In this research, the researcher used Carl Gustav Jung analytical psychology theory which contains ego, personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. In this research, the researcher focused on Jung Archetypes theory, which Archetypes is part of the collective unconscious. The researcher used twelve archetypes in this research: persona, shadow, anima, animus, the great mother, the wise old man, hero, child, hermaphrodite, trickster, and self. The researcher used those twelve archetypes to find Smeagol archetypes and used that to analyze how the One ring influenced Smeagol personality. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method to collect the data. The data collected from dialogue, narration, and monologue which was related to Smeagol’s. the data presented in quotations and pictures. The result of this research, the researcher found five archetypes in Smeagol and one in the One Ring. Five archetypes that found in Smeagol are the persona, shadow, the hero, hermaphrodite and the trickster, and for the One Ring is the mana. The major archetypes in Smeagol were the trickster, which was the most influenced on changing Smeagol personality. Lord of the Rings: Film Return of The King diadaptasi dari novel dengan judul yang sama dari karya J.R.R. Hasil dari penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan lima arketipe di Smeagol dan satu arketipe di One Ring. Lima arketipe yang ditemukan di Smeagol adalah persona, shadow, hero, hermaphrodite dan trickster, dan untuk One Ring adalah mana. AN ANALYSIS OF MAIN CHARACTERS IN WARM BODIES FILM USING JUNG THEORY OF ARCHETYPES

ABSTRACTThe collective unconscious concept of Jungian critic contains archetypes that are unique part of the theory of human personality. The archetypes can be found in R and Julie character in Warm Bodies film. The purpose of this study is to find out some archetypes based on Jungian critics that related to both characters. Analytical psychology theory by Carl G Jung was used as the main theory to find out the archetypes that related to both characters. This study is categorized as literary criticism since this study is emphasized on the analysis of literary work. The primary data of this study are collected from Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies film. The result of this study is showed there were six archetypes found in the film. THE LEADERSHIP OF TWO CHARACTERS IN TRANSFORMERS MOVIE

This research studied the character of two leaders in Transformers movie.  There are six movies of Transformers, but the writer only took four movies squeal as the object research is because the changed story and character in the fifth and the sixth movies. The subject of this research is Optimus and Megatron character. There are two objectives in this research, the first is the leadership of two leaders and the second is the character of two leaders. The writer used the leadership theory into three categories the first category is Dilts’ model of leadership, the second category is Davis’ form of leadership theory and the third category is Stogdill’s characteristic of leadership. Meanwhile to find the character of two leaders, the writer used Johnson’s indirect characterization theory that consists of five methods namely is speech, thoughts, effect to other characters, action and looks. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative that consists to data in the form of words and sentences. The data are dialog of script in movie.  The results of this study, the writer found the different leadership and character two leaders. The writer found their characters and leaderships by seeing the interaction between leader and follower in movies. Optimus Prime’s leadership categorizes in macro leadership, leadership positive form and all of leadership characteristic. Optimus characters defined as moral character. Meanwhile Megatron’s leadership categorizes in meta leadership, leadership negative form and all of leadership characteristic. Megatron characters defined as immoral character

THE FUNCTIONS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS OF MALEFICENT CHARACTER IN MALEFICENT MOVIE

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to identify the types of directive speech acts and functions of language existed in Maleficent’s utterances. There were two theories used in order to fulfill the two objectives of this study. Searle’s (1979) types of directives helped the writer to identify types of directives speech acts uttered by Maleficent. While Jakobson’s (1960) functions of language helped to identify functions of language existed in each directive of Maleficent. This study was a qualitative research due to the fact of using words as its data taken from Maleficent movie script. As the method in analysing data, this study used conversation analysis in which taking account not only the utterances of Maleficent, but also the actions involved within. As the results, there were five types of directive speech acts and three functions of language found in the utterances of Maleficent in Maleficent movie script. The five types of directive speech acts were commanding, inviting, forbidding, requesting, and suggesting. Of all these five types, commanding was the most uttered and effective type by Maleficent regarding her role as the Moors’ protector who gave her the authority to command other people. Meanwhile, the three functions of language in Maleficent’s directives were expressive, conative, and referential.

WOMAN'S ROLE IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA PORTRAYED IN MARMEE'S CHARACTER IN LITTLE WOMEN MOVIE

ABSTRACT This research analyzed Little Women movie which is adapted from a novel with the same title written by Louisa May Alcott in the 19th century. This research focused on Marmee’s roles and related to the setting of the movie to be discussed further. The character’s role is explained thoroughly by using Tiffany K. Wayne’s theory of triple role. This research used mimetic approach and deals with descriptive method to analyse the data qualitatively.The result of this research is Marmee’s character experienced one out of three roles that proper with Tiffany’s triple role theory. This role is reproductive role where it was shown in many scenes during the story. The reproductive activities shown by Marmee were she cared for her daughters, she looked after them, educated them and cooked for them where these represents as reproductive role according to Tiffany and it proved that Marmee is capable to handle all things without the existence of her husband in that era. The two other roles missing are productive and community management role. These roles are not seen towards the character because Marmee did not work in the story and she chose to be a housewife rather than did voluntarily activity or earned money.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menganalisis film Little Women yang diadaptasi dari sebuah novel dengan judul yang sama yang ditulis oleh Louisa May Alcott pada abad ke-19. Peran karakter dijelaskan secara menyeluruh dengan menggunakan teori triple role oleh Tiffany K. Wayne. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan mimetik dan metode deskriptif untuk menganalisis data secara kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah karakter Marmee mengalami satu dari tiga role (peran) yang sesuai dengan teori triple role, Tiffany. Role (peran) ini adalah reproductive role (peran reproduksi) di mana ia ditampilkan dalam banyak adegan selama cerita. Aktivitas/kegiatan reproduksi yang diperlihatkan oleh Marmee adalah ia perhatian pada putrinya, ia merawat mereka, mendidik mereka dan memasak untuk mereka di mana ini semua merupakan peran reproduksi menurut Tiffany dan itu membuktikan bahwa Marmee mampu menangani semua hal meskipun tanpa keberadaannya suami nya di era itu. Dua role (peran) lain yang hilang adalah productive role (peran produksi) dan community management role (peran dalam manajemen di masyarakat). Dua peran (role) ini tidak terlihat pada karakter Marmee dikarenakan Marmee tidak bekerja dalam cerita dan dia memilih untuk menjadi ibu rumah tangga daripada melakukan kegiatan sukarela di masyarakat seperti halnya menjadi volunteer

The Adaptation to Climate Change Portrayed Through Al Gore's Character in An Inconvenient Sequel:Truth to Power Film(An Ecocriticism Study)

In industrialization era, human activities have a global impact on the environment. Natural phenomena begin to occur, one of which is climate change. Rising sea-levels, warming earth temperatures, and air pollution are the actual impacts of climate change. The study aimed to explain how climate change is portrayed in An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power Film. In addition, this study also tried to investigate the adaptations carried out by Al Gore as the main character in responding to climate change. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The study used ecocriticism theory (By Garrard, 2004) to explain the representation of climate change and the adaptation of the main character to climate change. Data obtained from An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power Film by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk was released in 2017. The results of the data analysis showed the representation of climate change in the film through issues covering three aspects, apocalypse, pollution, and earth. These three aspects significantly impact human life, particularly health, economy, and environment. In addition, adaptations made by the main character in responding to climate change can be analyzed through environmentalism and deep ecology. The main character responded to environmentalism by building self-awareness of environmental concerns, and he created a training program to build awareness of human beings. Meanwhile, in deep ecology, he suggested switching to renewable energy to meet human energy needs to be more environmentally friendly and reduce the effects of greenhouse gases and pollution

IDENTITY OF TIMO CRUZ CHARACTER THROUGH NEEDS FULFILLMENT IN THE "COACH CARTER" MOVIE

ABSTRACT This research aimed to find out how Timo Cruz as the main character in Coach Carter movie obtained his real identity by examining the needs Timo Cruz fulfilled using Abraham Maslow's theory of Five Hierarchy of Needs. To begin with, the researcher analyzed the needs that Timo Cruz fulfilled from the first stage to the fifth stage. After analyzing the needs, the researcher then analyzed the four identities from James Marcia's theory. Furthermore, the researcher identified what stage of needs that could be linked up to the identity. The method used in this research was qualitative research. The data were analyzed through Abraham Maslow's theory about Five Hierarchy of Needs and Four Identity Status by James Marcia. The movie was analyzed by the characters’ conversation and dialogue script. The researcher used some steps to collect the data to be examined. In analyzing the data, the researcher was watching the movie several times, comprehended the dialogues and the pictures of the movie related to needs fulfillment and identity of Timo Cruz character. The researcher found the needs of Timo Cruz character based on the Abraham Maslow's theory on five needs; physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. The researcher also found the identity of Timo Cruz that focused on four identities; identity foreclosure, diffusion, moratorium and achievement. Afterwards, the researcher explained the most dominant needs like social needs and identity from character Timo Cruz. Key words: needs, identity  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana cara tokoh utama dalam film Coach Carter, Timo Cruz memperoleh identitas sebenarnya dengan mengkaji berbagai kebutuhan yang telah dipenuhi olehnya melalui teori Hirarki Lima Kebutuhan dari Abraham Maslow. Pada langkah awal, peneliti menganalisa kebutuhan-kebutuhan yang telah dipenuhi oleh Timo Cruz mulai tingkatan pertama sampai pada tingkatan kelima. Selanjutnya peneliti menganalisa empat identitas dari teori James Marcia. Pada langkah ini, peneliti mengidentifikasi tingkatan kebutuhan apa yang memiliki hubungan dengan identitas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif. Data yang sudah dikumpulkan kemudian dianalisa menggunakan teori Hirarki Lima Kebutuhan oleh Abraham Maslow dan teori Empat Identitas oleh James Marcia. Percakapan-percakapan para tokoh serta naskah dialog lah yang dianalisa dari film ini. Peneliti menggunakan beberapa cara dalam mengumpulkan data-data untuk dianalisa selanjutnya. Dalam menganalisa data-data tersebut, peneliti telah menonton film ini beberapa kali, kemudian menghubungkan beberapa dialog dan adegan yang ada dalam film Coach Carter dengan pemenuhan kebutuhan dan identitas dari tokoh Timo Cruz. Peneliti menemukan adanya pemenuhan kebutuhan oleh tokoh Timo Cruz berdasarkan teori Lima Kebutuhan Abraham Maslow; kebutuhan fisiologis, kebutuhan rasa aman, kebutuhan sosial, kebutuhan untuk diapresiasi, dan kebutuhan aktualisasi diri. Selain lima kebutuhan tersebut, peneliti juga menemukan identitas Timo Cruz berdasarkan pada empat identitas James Marcia: pengambilan identitas, difusi identitas, penundaan identitas, dan pencapaian identitas. Setelah itu, peneliti menjelaskan kebutuhan yang paling berpengaruh seperti kebutuhan sosial dan identitas dari tokoh Timo Cruz. Kata kunci: kebutuhan, identitas

HISTORIOPHOTY IN THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE

ABSTRACT The object of this research was to find the historiophoty in The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the purpose of this research was to find how historiophoty interpreted in the historical events of The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This research used qualitative method as research design and library research as the method of data collection. This research showed that historiophoty could be used to interpret World War II as a setting and Christianity concept related to the author personal experienced.
