Dementia, music and biometric gaming: Rising to the Dementia Challenge

    Get PDF
In 2012, the U.K. government launched its Dementia Challenge, authorizing additional funding for dementia research and health care. The search for curative medicines is ongoing, but scientific research reveals evidence that music can play a positive role in general health, and in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in particular. This article considers whether some of the challenges that dementia presents could be addressed through music therapy and proposes that biometric gaming might offer one means of channeling such associated health benefits to sufferers of dementia, even in the final stages of the disease

    Observation of a Broad L=1 cqˉc\bar{q} State in BD+ππB^{-}\to D^{*+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} at CLEO

Using 4.7 fb^-1 of data taken at CESR at energies at and near the Upsilon(4S) we have studied the decay B- -> D{*+}pi-pi- (and its conjugate). We observe a new, broad charmed meson state, which we interpret as D_J(j=1/2), in its decay to D{*+}pi-. Our preliminary results indicate the mass and width of this L=1 state to be m = (2461 +41/-3} +/-10 +/-32) MeV and Gamma = (290 +101/-79 +/-26 +/-36) MeV, with the third uncertainty associated with the parameterization of the relative strong phases. In addition we have measured several new branching fractions of charged B mesons. All quoted results are preliminary.Comment: 7 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

A New Method for Selecting Exclusive Semileptonic Charmless B-Decays at e+ee^+ e^- Colliders at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S)

We introduce a new method for selecting exclusive semileptonic charmless B-decays in the presence of a large background. The method can be applied to charged and neutral B-mesons decaying into any exclusive neutral or charged hadronic final state. The method is designed for high luminosity \eplemi colliders operating at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S). It employs an improved partial reconstruction technique for \Dstar-mesons and a novel 0-C event fit to both B-meson's decay products resulting in the kinematics of all particles (including neutrinos) in the event. The charged lepton energies are accessible from 1.0 \GeV to the kinematic limit.Comment: 10 pages with 7 figures in subdirectory fi

Luminescence quenching of the triplet excimer state by air traces in gaseous argon

While developing a liquid argon detector for dark matter searches we investigate the influence of air contamination on the VUV scintillation yield in gaseous argon at atmospheric pressure. We determine with a radioactive alpha-source the photon yield for various partial air pressures and different reflectors and wavelength shifters. We find for the fast scintillation component a time constant tau1= 11.3 +- 2.8 ns, independent of gas purity. However, the decay time of the slow component depends on gas purity and is a good indicator for the total VUV light yield. This dependence is attributed to impurities destroying the long-lived argon excimer states. The population ratio between the slowly and the fast decaying excimer states is determined for alpha-particles to be 5.5 +-0.6 in argon gas at 1100 mbar and room temperature. The measured mean life of the slow component is tau2 = 3.140 +- 0.067 microsec at a partial air pressure of 2 x 10-6 mbar.Comment: 7 pages submitted to NIM
