“Stay out of my territory”:Walter White’s evolving authority as portrayed through camera techniques and narrative in Breaking Bad

Abstract. This thesis examines how the character of Walter White’s evolving authority is portrayed through cinematographic techniques and narrative in the American series Breaking Bad. This is done by comparing White to three other characters while focusing on camera angles and other filmmaking techniques, as well as the narrative structure of the series. The other three characters, Hank Schrader, Gustavo Fring, and Jesse Pinkman were chosen for the comparisons due to their contrasting social statuses, in order to diversify the analysis for more detailed conclusions. The aim of this thesis is to examine whether different cinematographic techniques are used to portray different levels of authority, and what those techniques might be. The series shows how White evolves into his criminal alter ego Heisenberg, who appears to have more authority than the former. The analysis of this thesis consists of close examination of some scenes from episodes of Breaking Bad, and most of the material used in this thesis comes from the series. Past research about cinematography and film analysis, as well as Breaking Bad is used to support the analysis, and to offer more information about analyzing a series. Conclusions from the analysis suggest that the differences in power and White’s evolving authority are portrayed through various cinematographic techniques, as well as through the narrative structure. The methods of portraying authority do not seem to depend much on the character whose authority is portrayed, despite them being contrasting. The methods also do not seem to change much throughout the seasons of the series, although White’s more powerful alter ego, Heisenberg, can be seen more in the later seasons. Cinematographic techniques, such as camera angles and shot structure appear to affect how the different power dynamics are portrayed, and how White’s authority evolves. The methods of portrayal seem to be based widely on the intensity of the scene. Different camera techniques, such as close-up shots seem to be used to add intensity to scenes by, for example, showing a character’s facial expressions better. Medium close-up shots, which are often used in the Western genre, are also often used to show a power battle between two characters. Colors and lighting also seem to affect the portrayal of power. The colors of the characters’ outfits have been carefully planned and selected, and they often depend on the character’s emotions. Red is often used for clothes and other items in order to foreshadow violence or aggression. Lighting and shadows are used to show a difference in power between two characters by placing one of them in the shadow and one of them in the light. The analysis also shows that silence is used throughout the series to emphasize a character’s power, and possibly to make certain lines appear more powerful.Tiivistelmä. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, kuinka Walter Whiten kehittyvä auktoriteetti näkyy elokuvamenetelmien ja narratiivin keinoin amerikkalaisessa Breaking Bad -sarjassa. Tarkastelu tapahtuu vertaamalla Whitea kolmeen muuhun hahmoon, keskittyen samalla kameran liikkeisiin, kuvakulmiin ja muihin elokuvaustekniikoihin, sekä sarjan kerronnan rakenteeseen. Hahmot, joihin Whitea verrataan, ovat Hank Schrader, Gustavo Fring sekä Jesse Pinkman, joiden yhteiskunnalliset asemat ovat sarjassa keskenään varsin erilaiset. Nämä hahmot vertailuun lisäämällä analyysistä saadaan monipuolisempaa, ja johtopäätöksistä tarkempia. Tutkielman pääasiallisena tavoitteena on selvittää, onko sarjassa käytetty eri elokuvaustekniikoita erilaisten voimasuhteiden esittämiseen, ja millaisia tekniikoita ne mahdollisesti voisivat olla. Sarjassa nähdään, kuinka White kehittyy rikolliseksi toiseksi minäkseen, Heisenbergiksi, jolla vaikuttaa olevan valtaa edellä mainittua enemmän. Tutkielman analyysi koostuu muutaman Breaking Bad -kohtauksen huolellisesta tarkastelusta, ja suurin osa tutkielmassa käytetystä materiaalista onkin peräisin sarjasta. Lisäksi aikaisempia elokuvaukseen liittyviä tutkimuksia käytetään analyysin tukena sekä lisätietona. Analyysistä voidaan päätellä, että elokuvaustekniikoilla ja kerronnan rakenteella Breaking Badissä on merkitystä voimasuhteiden ja Whiten kehittyvän auktoriteetin esittämisen kannalta. Vallan esittämisen keinot eivät vaikuta riippuvan niinkään hahmosta tai tuotantokaudesta, vaikka Whiten Heisenberg-puolta nähdäänkin enemmän sarjan myöhemmillä tuotantokausilla. Elokuvaustekniikat, kuten kuvakulmat ja otosten rakenne näyttäisivät vaikuttavan voimasuhteiden esittämiseen, ja siihen, kuinka Whiten auktoriteetin kehittyminen näkyy. Nämä tekniikat näyttävät riippuvan kohtauksen intensiivisyydestä. Erilaisia kuvaustekniikoita, kuten lähikuvia, käytetään kohtauksissa intensiivisyyden lisäämiseen, esimerkiksi näyttämällä hahmon ilmeet lähempää. Puolilähikuvia puolestaan käytetään useissa kohtauksissa valtataisteluasetelmien näyttämiseen, aivan kuten lännenelokuvissa. Väreillä ja valaistuksella vaikuttaisi myös olevan vaikutus voimasuhteiden esittämisessä. Hahmojen vaatetusten värit ovat tarkoin suunniteltuja ja valittuja, ja ne riippuvat usein hahmon tunnetilasta. Esimerkiksi punaisella värillä sarjassa usein enteillään väkivaltaa tai aggressiivisuutta. Hahmojen voimasuhteiden eroja esitetään myös valojen ja varjojen avulla, asettamalla yksi hahmo varjoon ja toinen valoon. Analyysistä voidaan myös nähdä, että hiljaisuutta käytetään läpi sarjan hahmojen vallan korostamisen keinona. Hiljaisuuden avulla voidaan myös saada tietyt vuorosanat kuulostamaan vaikutusvaltaisemmilta

Yoda the powerful Jedi Master:perception of the character of Yoda in five of the first six Star Wars films

The main aim of my research is to analyze the character of Yoda’s perception of others and himself, and other characters’ perception of him in two of the three original Star Wars trilogy films and all three of the prequel films. In my thesis, I used methods of film analysis, as well as discourse analysis. I analyzed the perceptions individually in different scenes from each film. The conclusions of my research are that the character of Yoda is a very central and significant character, and other characters, as well as himself, perceive him as wise and powerful. Although, Yoda is a powerful character, he is very humble, and values other character’s opinions and words.Tutkimukseni päätavoitteena on analysoida Yodan käsitystä muista hahmoista sekä hänestä itsestään että muiden hahmojen käsitystä Yodasta, kahdessa kolmesta alkuperäisestä Star Wars -elokuvasta sekä kaikissa kolmessa esiosaelokuvassa. Työssäni käytin elokuva-analyysin menetelmiä sekä diskurssianalyysiä. Analysoin käsityksiä erikseen jokaisesta elokuvasta eri kohtauksissa. Tutkimukseni johtopäätökset ovat, että Yoda on hyvin keskeinen ja merkittävä hahmo, ja muut hahmot, samoin kuin Yoda itse, pitävät häntä viisaana ja voimakkaana. Vaikka Yoda onkin voimakas hahmo, hän on hyvin nöyrä ja arvostaa muiden hahmojen mielipiteitä ja sanoja
