Dynamical evolution of high velocity clouds in the intergalactic medium

HI observations of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) indicate, that they are interacting with their ambient medium. Even clouds located in the very outer Galactic halo or the intergalactic space seem to interact with their ambient medium. In this paper, we investigate the dynamical evolution of high velocity neutral gas clouds moving through a hot magnetized ambient plasma by means of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic plasma-neutral gas simulations. This situation is representative for the fast moving dense neutral gas cloudlets in the Magellanic Stream as well as for high velocity clouds in general. The question on the dynamical and thermal stabilization of a cold dense neutral cloud in a hot thin ambient halo plasma is numerically investigated. The simulations show the formation of a comet-like head-tail structure combined with a magnetic barrier of increased field strength which exerts a stabilizing pressure on the cloud and hinders hot plasma from diffusing into the cloud. The simulations can explain both the survival times in the intergalactic medium and the existence of head-tail high velocity clouds.Comment: 11 pages, 19 figure

We introduce management and spirituality scholars to the “knack” passages from the c. 4th century B.C.E. text, the Zhuangzi. The knack passages are parables about low status figures, such as wheelwrights, furniture makers and cooks, whose actions offer insights into the spirituality of ordinary work and, we argue, of entrepreneurship. Such non-corporate settings are lesser-studied domains for spirituality. Ancient Chinese writings have been noticed by spirituality and management writers but we call for deeper scholarly textual attention. We seek also to model more attention to the renaissance in scholarship on classical China. More ambitiously, we hope to show that these passages are not only germane but worthy of careful consideration. Our efforts reflect the influence of Slingerland\u27s (2003) study of “effortless action” as a central soteriological goal in ancient China

Equivalent expert career paths in small- and medium-sized companies – chance to gain and retain good employees or a threat for managers?

Research questions: Does a manager in a small- and medium-sized company accept an expert on the same hierarchy level or are conflicts the consequences due to her/his power motivation? Methods: Questionnaire across different hierarchy levels in a medium-sized company Results: Managers are aware of the need for experts and claim that both careers are equal but are motivated by power and reputation and for that reason will not accept an expert on the same hierarchy level

The Role of Involved Positive Parenting and Classroom Emotional Support on Preschool Children’s Prosocial and Problem Behaviors

Children’s behavior early in life has many short- and long-term implications. The current study investigates the associations among involved positive parenting, classroom emotional support, and children’s problem and prosocial behaviors, using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory as a theoretical framework. Additionally, classroom emotional support was analyzed to see if it moderated the association between involved positive parenting and children’s behaviors. This study examined Head Start classrooms from the FACES 2009 data set, specifically looking at parent-reported positive parenting, observed classroom emotional support, and parent- and teacher-reported children’s problem and prosocial behaviors. Regression and interaction models were chosen to run analyses through STATA. Results indicated that involved positive parenting was significantly associated with parent-reported children’s prosocial behaviors, while classroom emotional support was negatively associated with teacher-reported children’s problem behaviors. Interestingly, classroom emotional support significantly moderated the association between involved positive parenting and parent-reported children’s problem behaviors in an unexpected way, with children who had a mismatch in adult-child interactions (i.e. high involved positive parenting and low classroom emotional support) had more problem and less prosocial behaviors at home. Future studies should investigate the cross-context association of children’s behaviors

ANALYZING VERTICAL JUMP AND STANDING LONG JUMP POWER RATIOS TO DETERMINE LOWER EXTREMITY INJURY RISK USING AUROC CURVES

The purpose of this study examined the ability to predict previous knee and thigh injuries in athletes by assessing allometrically scaled ratios of average power and peak power results from VJ (vertical jump) and SLJ (standing long jump) testing using ROC curves. The strength and conditioning testing data and medical records of 26 female NCAA-I from soccer and volleyball teams were examined. Data examined included isokinetic knee flexion and extension, VJ power, and SLJ power outputs. Previous thigh or knee injury was compared to scaled average power ratio, peak power ratio, and calculated z-scores for average power ratio and peak power ratio. The use of AUROC to assess power output from the performance tests of the VJ and the SLJ to determine injury risk poorly predicts the possibility of a previous knee or a thigh injury

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE RELEASE FACTOR EFFECTS OF HAMMER THROW

    Get PDF
This study aimed to determine the relationship of release factors on the final hammer throw distance of American throwers as well to determine where differences in release factors between the years and throw distance groups (TDG). The video from 94 hammer throws (52 female throws and 42 male throws) were analyzed using 2-D to 3-D coordinates via DLT procedures. Analysis of the release factors of a throw revealed correlations with release velocity but not height and angle. Further analysis revealed that release height has decreased while vertical velocity and release angle have increased since 2016

ABSTRACT SURVEY OF ASSESSING PAIN IN CLINICAL PRACTICE AND APPLICABILITY OF A NEW ASSESSMENT by Michelle Konz The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor Joyce Engel, PhD Aims The purpose of this study is to identify pain assessments that are being used to measure an individual’s pain experience and to discover how occupational therapists are currently assessing pain in youths who have complex communication needs with a developmental disability (DD). Methods Phase 1: A literature review was conducted through the use of electronic databases to research 17 different methods of pain assessment to create descriptive charts to aide in pain assessment. Phase 2: A 13-question survey was completed by 19 occupational therapists selected through a convenience sample, to determine how pain is currently being assessed for youths who have complex communication needs. Results Phase 1: Three charts were compiled of pain assessments. Each pain assessment has different aspects, but no one measure covers all pain domains and are not accessible. Phase 2: The results indicated that 12 out of 19 respondents do not assess pain. Conclusion In Phase 1, it was determined current pain assessments do not gather a holistic report of pain experiences and are not fully accessible. Survey results suggest that pain is not assessed by more than half of the OTs in this study. Creation of a new pain assessment should be completed in order to fulfill the need of an accessible self-report assessment for youths who have complex communication needs with a DD.
