Astrometry of HO Masers in Nearby Star-Forming Regions with VERA --- IV. L1448C
We have carried out multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration
of Radio Astrometry) of the 22~GHz HO masers associated with a Class 0
protostar L1448C in the Perseus molecular cloud. The maser features trace the
base of collimated bipolar jet driven by one of the infrared counter parts of
L1448C named as L1448C(N) or L1448-mm A. We detected possible evidences for
apparent acceleration and precession of the jet according to the
three-dimensional velocity structure. Based on the phase-referencing VLBI
astrometry, we have successfully detected an annual parallax of the HO
maser in L1448C to be 4.310.33~milliarcseconds (mas) which corresponds to
a distance of 23218~pc from the Sun. The present result is in good
agreement with that of another HO maser source NGC~1333 SVS13A in the
Perseus molecular cloud, 235~pc. It is also consistent with the photometric
distance, 220~pc. Thus, the distance to the western part of the Perseus
molecular cloud complex would be constrained to be about 235~pc rather than the
larger value, 300~pc, previously reported.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Pseudogap Phase Boundary in Overdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 Studied by Measuring Out-of-plane Resistivity under the Magnetic Fields
The characteristic pseudogap temperature T* in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 system has been
systematically evaluated as a function of doping, especially focusing on its
overdoped region, by measuring the out-of-plane resistivity under the magnetic
fields. Overdoped samples have been prepared by annealing TSFZ-grown
Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals under the high oxygen pressures (990 kgf/cm2). At
a zero field, the out-of-plane resistivity showed a metallic behavior down to
Tc (= 62 K), while under the magnetic fields of over 3 T,it showed typical
upturn behavior from around 65 K upon decreasing temperature. This result
suggests that the pseudogap and superconductivity are different phenomena.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. Final version accepted for the Proceedings of the

Helianthus tuberosus (Jerusalem artichoke) tubers improve glucose tolerance and hepatic lipid profile in rats fed a high-fat diet
Objectives: To analyze the effects of feeding Helianthus tuberosus (HT) tubers on glucose tolerance and lipid profile in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD).
Methods: A normal HFD or HFD including 10 w/w% HT tubers (HFD + HT) was fed to F334/Jcl rats. After 10 weeks, organ weights, glucose tolerance, and lipid profile were analyzed.
Results: The body weight, liver weight, and epidermal fat content in the HFD group were higher than those of the normal group, and similar to those of the HFD + HT group. The oral glucose tolerance test at 10 weeks revealed that the blood glucose level 30 min after beginning the test in the HFD + HT group was significantly lower than that in the HFD group. Liver triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in the HFD + HT group were significantly lower than those in the HFD group. Fecal triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in the HFD + HT group were higher than those in the HFD group. Histological analyses revealed that fat and glycogen accumulation increased in the HFD group, but decreased in the HFD + HT group.
Conclusions: These results indicate that HT tubers have anti-fatty liver effects based on improvements in glucose tolerance and the hepatic lipid profile
Magnetic field effect on Fe-induced short-range magnetic correlation and electrical conductivity in BiPbSrCuFeO
We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies
under magnetic fields of
BiPbSrCuFeO, in which hole
carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic
correlation with incommensurability , whereas a Fe-free compound
shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature
in the form of and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction
of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive
effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation.
Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate
magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two
different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic
alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. The latter picture appears to be more
relevant to the present results.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
The Behavioral Role of Males of Platypus Quercivorus Murayama in Their Subsocial Colonies
The behavioral role of male ambrosia beetles, Platypus quercivorus, in subsocial colonies both field and laboratory has been investigated. The entrance tunnels, where the male beetles are staying, are short, with a mean 4 cm long and mostly incline upwards from outside to inside at an angle of around 20º. To examine the role of males, another male or female (as the invader) was placed into a tunnel. When inhabitant males stayed in the tunnel they quickly expelled the invaders, regardless of their sex of the invaders. However, when an inhabitant male was removed an introduced male or female could freely enter the tunnel and was accepted by the inhabitant female. Upon replacing an inhabitant male with an invader male or female and then putting another invader male or female into the tunnel, no rejection occurred, suggesting that invader males and females play no role in guarding the tunnel. Based on the results an inhabitant male seems to have three responsibilities; protection of the gallery from invaders, protection of progeny (larva) from falling down and also keeping the gallery clean from frass. The 20º angle of the entrance tunnel tends to aid both in gallery protection and in frass clearing
