    Multisensorial dynamics : encountering and capturing the intangible heritage of the Art School in Britain

    Art Schools are key sites for the formation of material culture, yet have resisted narrativisation of their own materiality. This article examines the heritage of art schools and suggests strategies for assessing the material and immaterial practices it produces. It surveys a number of counter-hegemonic practices historically within the twentieth-century art school, before considering material encounters in the art school and the spatial-temporal qualities of the art school site. The article argues for a model of temporal uncertainty and fluidity that can be experienced as Art School Time where flexible, cross-disciplinary spaces for as yet unknown material and immaterial encounters enable students to develop new tactics to address societal challenges within the multi-layered and multisensorial spaces of the art school

    La musique, la mémoire et l’objet absent dans les archives numériques

    Cet article traite des conséquences mémorielles de la patrimonialisation des musiques populaires (entendues au sens anglo-saxon du terme) dans des archives numériques. Par l’examen détaillé de deux sites internet d’archives en ligne déposées par les internautes eux-mêmes (Manchester District Music Archive et Home of Metal), il interroge sur les représentations mémorielles collectives se fixant sur les artefacts musicaux présents sur l’internet. La patrimonialisation contemporaine des musiques par ces sites conduisant simultanément à la présence et à l’absence de l’objet, cette posture est comparée à celles des archives et des musées traditionnels, puis il est montré que de tels sites internet constituent des médiateurs de mémoire permettant deux lectures de celle-ci, l’une personnelle, l’autre communautaire. Enfin, l’article envisage le rôle futur des archives numériques au côté d’autres formes de patrimonialisation de la musique.This article addresses the memorial consequences of placing popular music in digital archives. Focusing on two online archives of user-generated artefacts (Manchester District Music Archive and Home of Metal) it examines the collective memory associations that attach to music objects on the web. Contemporary collecting of music by websites results in the simultaneous absence and presence of the object. This position is compared to traditional archives and museums, with consideration given to the website as a mediator of memory that permits both personal and community readings of memory. Finally, the article envisages the role of digital archives in the future alongside other formats of music heritage

    ArchiveKSA : creating a digital archive for Kingston School of Art

    Traditional archives of historic artefacts were not systematically acquired by Kingston School of Art during its formative years. To address the significant discrepancy between the historic practice of the art school and its material representation within holdings, ArchiveKSA emerged as a digital archiving platform. As researcher on ArchiveKSA, I am at the nexus of several alumni, student and staff communities. Collecting for ArchiveKSA involves nurturing these nascent online communities to connect personal narratives and virtual artefacts in Webs of social relations. Using ArchiveKSA as a case study, this article examines theories of online community-fostered archives and compares their functioning to traditional archives. The positioning of digital archives within memory frameworks and the possibilities of multivocality in online and physical display are areas considered, with the similarities and differences between the digital and physical versions of the archive thrown into relief. </jats:p

    Climate change : design teaching for a new reality

    n October 2015 students from [University] designed and delivered ‘Climate Customs’, an open pop-up studio during London’s Inside Out festival. Conceived and developed in association with Helen Storey Foundation, the studio aimed to test ways of capturing public responses to climate change and sustainability. Tasked with developing methods of public engagement, students devised a journey of participation to highlight the global implications of climate change – how it is likely to affect each and every one of us, albeit in different ways and at different rates in different parts of the world. Drawing on the results and outputs from the pop-up studio – including visitor, student, project initiator, and tutor perspectives – our paper considers questions of design for sustainability, design for engagement, and studio culture. It presents and reflects on the format and programme that the students devised, and considers implications of incorporating such approaches into wider design teaching practice

    Life on the Outskirts is a digital archiving project being undertaken in collaboration between the Helen Storey Foundation and Kingston University. Helen Storey studied Foundation and Fashion at Kingston Polytechnic before her varied career as a fashion designer in Italy and London and as a social artist collaborating with scientists on projects including Primitive Streak, Catalytic Clothing and Wonderland. Robert Knifton uses his work with the Helen Storey Foundation to discuss key issues around digital archiving such as ‘born digital’ artefacts, digital barriers to materiality and ritualized material encounters in the archive, multivocality of digital archival artefacts, and the educational uses of the digital archive, and the great potential of the performative digital archive space.</jats:p
