We examined dietary habits, food intakes, health status, and school and community life of meal skipping children, and investigated factors predicting meal skipping of children. A sample was composed of 944 children in low-income families who were provided with public meal service. The sample was obtained from the Survey of Meal Service for Poor Children conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2007. Meal skipping was significantly associated with a lower nutrition and health status, and poor school performance of children, as hypothesized. The school age of child, family structure, region, job of caretaker, concern about diet, and the child's visit to welfare center significantly predicted frequency of meal skipping. We suggested a few implications for community practice to reduce meal skipping of children

    Race, gender and retirement income

Drawing on both individualistic (human capital and status attainment) and structural (dual economy and class analysis) theoretical orientations, this study compares employment and retirement income determination for a national sample of Social Security Recipients. There is a substantial amount of income variation not only when respondents were in the paid labor force, but also in retirement. Income determination processes are similar for whites and nonwhites, and for men and women. Human capital in terms of formal education is lower for nonwhites, but higher for women. It directly, positively affects income from all four sources examined, and also serves as an important intervening variable, reducing the income disadvantage of nonwhites but not of women. Even after controlling for individualistic factors, structural factors affect income. Core sector employment, which is less likely for nonwhites and women, increases employment income and pension income. Self-employment, which is less highly for women, decreases pension income, but increases asset income. From the findings are drawn policy implications for promoting greater equality throughout the life cycle among race and gender groups in the U.S

Complex Verb Constructions in Child Korean: Overt Markers of Covert Functional Structure

this paper we will apply to Korean the standard techniques which have been used to show that young children represent functional projections mainly for European languages. And what we find is the following: First, we suggest that the over-use of the default mood-inflection '-e' in the earliest speech of one Korean two-year old parallels root infinitive forms observed in other languages. Second, the absence of inflectional morphemes and the absence of correlations between specific verb forms and null-subjects, or tense markers, seem to be consistent with the view that children initially have only lexical categories. Despite this apparently strong evidence for a prefunctional analysis of child Korean syntax, we argue that the systematic presence of the linking morpheme '-ko-' in truncated auxiliary verb constructions implies that at least some level of functional structure is represented, even when it is never produced

Learning a verb’s meaning and its associated syntactic structures pose a number of difficult problems for a learner. However, it is widely assumed that there are consistent correspondences between verb meanings and verb syntax, and that knowledge of these correspondences may provide important help to th
