High resolution infrared measurements
Sample ground based cloud radiance data from a high resolution infrared sensor are shown and the sensor characteristics are presented in detail. The purpose of the Infrared Analysis Measurement and Modeling Program (IRAMMP) is to establish a deterministic radiometric data base of cloud, sea, and littoral terrain clutter to be used to advance the design and development of Infrared Search and Track (IRST) systems as well as other infrared devices. The sensor is a dual band radiometric sensor and its description, together with that of the Data Acquisition System (DAS), are given. A schematic diagram of the sensor optics is shown
The Effects of Malpractice Pressure and Liability Reforms on Physicians’ Perceptions of Medical Care
Considerable evidence suggests that the medical malpractice liability system neither provides compensation to patients who suffer negligent medical injury nor seeks to penalize physicians whose negligence causes patient injury. The relationship between liability reforms, malpractice pressure and physician perceptions of medical care is examined
Scattering Calculations with Wavelets
We show that the use of wavelet bases for solving the momentum-space
scattering integral equation leads to sparse matrices which can simplify the
solution. Wavelet bases are applied to calculate the K-matrix for
nucleon-nucleon scattering with the s-wave Malfliet-Tjon V potential. We
introduce a new method, which uses special properties of the wavelets, for
evaluating the singular part of the integral. Analysis of this test problem
indicates that a significant reduction in computational size can be achieved
for realistic few-body scattering problems.Comment: 26 pages, Latex, 6 eps figure
Learning to play by nature\u27s rules
Many countries are applying new, ecosystem-based approaches in management of lands and natural resources. In the United States, policies and practices of ecosystems management are significantly changing management of public forests and rangelands. The changes originate from public dissatisfaction with land-management planning and practices, and from growing concern for the health, diversity, and sustainability of forest and rangeland ecosystems. Ecosystem management emphasizes ecological processes and strives to work with, rather than against, the natural dynamics that shape and sustain ecological systems. It takes a big-picture perspective on land and resources management, and furthers understanding of ecological systems and management effects through an adaptive-management approach. Ecosystem management recognizes people who have a stake in the outcomes of management. Ecosystem management calls for better understanding of how ecosystems work, innovative management approaches, and a generous dose of humility
An Empirical Study of Six and Twelve-Member Jury Decision-Making Processes
This article employs the techniques of the social sciences in testing a legal proposition. After setting forth the hypotheses and methodology utilized by the experiment discussed herein, it presents the results obtained by examining the deliberations of different-sized juries concerning the same civil litigation. This article does not purport to be definitive; it does, however, attempt to indicate one methodology of interdisciplinary research which can be undertaken and the utility of this research to both the social sciences and the legal profession
The Lawyer\u27s Intercultural Communication Problems with Clients from Diverse Cultures
The role of the lawyer is currently in a state of flux. Former Chief Justice Warren Burger has repeatedly called upon the legal community to increase the study of communication skills in law schools. Other legal and communication scholars have recently discussed the importance of communication skills for the lawyer. More and more lawyers are becoming aware of the importance of understanding the research tools and theories used in communication research. The goal of this Perspective is to unify some of the empirical studies in the social sciences and law and to develop a theoretical model of intercultural interviewing and counseling that can be applied in the legal setting. Intercultural communication problems have been widely studied in doctor-patient and psychologist-client settings. However, few articles have been written on the subject in the lawyer-client context. A second goal of this Perspective is to encourage further empirical research geared specifically toward intercultural communication in the legal setting
