Quantum correlation in degenerate optical parametric oscillators with mutual injections

    Get PDF
We theoretically and numerically study the quantum dynamics of two degenerate optical parametric oscillators with mutual injections. The cavity mode in the optical coupling path between the two oscillator facets is explicitly considered. Stochastic equations for the oscillators and mutual injection path based on the positive PP representation are derived. The system of two gradually pumped oscillators with out-of-phase mutual injections is simulated, and its quantum state is investigated. When the incoherent loss of the oscillators other than the mutual injections is small, the squeezed quadratic amplitudes p^\hat{p} in the oscillators are positively correlated near the oscillation threshold. It indicates finite quantum correlation, estimated via Gaussian quantum discord, and the entanglement between the intracavity subharmonic fields. When the loss in the injection path is low, each oscillator around the phase transition point forms macroscopic superposition even under a small pump noise. It suggests that the squeezed field stored in the low-loss injection path weakens the decoherence in the oscillators.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; v3: author added, minor updat

Boltzmann approach to the large-angle cosmic X-ray background fluctuations

    Get PDF
Large-angle fluctuations in the cosmic X-ray background are investigated by a new formalism with a simple model of the X-ray sources. Our method is formulated from the Boltzmann equation and a simple extension of the work by Lahav et al. to be applicable to a hyperbolic (open) universe. The low multipole fluctuations due to the source clustering are analyzed in various cosmological models in both numerical and analytic way. The fluctuations strongly depend on the X-ray sources evolution model, as pointed out previously. It turns out that the nearby (z0.1z \lesssim 0.1) sources are the dominant contributors to the large-angle fluctuations. If these nearby sources are removed in an observed X-ray map, the dipole (low multipole) moment of the fluctuation drastically decreases. In this case the Compton-Getting effect of an observer's motion can be a dominant contribution to the dipole fluctuation. This feature of fluctuation, relating to the matter power spectrum, is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS in pres

Network of Time-Multiplexed Optical Parametric Oscillators as a Coherent Ising Machine

Finding the ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [1] maps to various combinatorial optimization problems in biology, medicine, wireless communications, artificial intelligence, and social network. So far no efficient classical and quantum algorithm is known for these problems, and intensive research is focused on creating physical systems - Ising machines - capable of finding the absolute or approximate ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [2-6]. Here we report a novel Ising machine using a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). Spins are represented with above-threshold binary phases of the OPOs and the Ising couplings are realized by mutual injections [7]. The network is implemented in a single OPO ring cavity with multiple trains of femtosecond pulses and configurable mutual couplings, and operates at room temperature. We programed the smallest non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)- hard Ising problem on the machine, and in 1000 runs of the machine no computational error was detected

Potential climate effects on Japanese rice productivity

Adaptation to climate change has become an important policy question in recent years. Agriculture is the economic activity most sensitive to climate change. We evaluate the dynamic effects of productivity change and individual efforts to adapt to climate change. Adaptation actions in agriculture are evaluated to determine how the climate affects production efficiency. In this paper, we use the bi-directional distance function method to measure Japanese rice production loss due to climate. We find that 1) accumulated precipitation has the greatest effect on rice production efficiency and 2) the climate effect on rice production efficiency decreases over time. Our results empirically support the benefit of an adaptation approach.Climate change, productivity analysis, agriculture

Character expression for spoken dialogue systems with semi-supervised learning using Variational Auto-Encoder

Character of spoken dialogue systems is important not only for giving a positive impression of the system but also for gaining rapport from users. We have proposed a character expression model for spoken dialogue systems. The model expresses three character traits (extroversion, emotional instability, and politeness) of spoken dialogue systems by controlling spoken dialogue behaviors: utterance amount, backchannel, filler, and switching pause length. One major problem in training this model is that it is costly and time-consuming to collect many pair data of character traits and behaviors. To address this problem, semi-supervised learning is proposed based on a variational auto-encoder that exploits both the limited amount of labeled pair data and unlabeled corpus data. It was confirmed that the proposed model can express given characters more accurately than a baseline model with only supervised learning. We also implemented the character expression model in a spoken dialogue system for an autonomous android robot, and then conducted a subjective experiment with 75 university students to confirm the effectiveness of the character expression for specific dialogue scenarios. The results showed that expressing a character in accordance with the dialogue task by the proposed model improves the user’s impression of the appropriateness in formal dialogue such as job interview
