Relationships between remotely sensed fisheries distribution information and selected oceanographic parameters in the Mississippi Sound

    Get PDF
A feasibility study to demonstrate the potential of satellites for providing fisheries significant information was conducted in the Mississippi Sound and adjacent offshore waters. Attempts were made to relate satellite acquired imagery to selected oceanographic parameters and then to relate these parameters to aircraft remotely sensed distribution patterns of resident surface schooling fishes. Initial results suggest that this approach is valid and that the satellite acquired imagery may have important fisheries resource assessment implications

The author has identified the following significant results. The most significant achievement realized is the successful mapping of high probability fishing areas from LANDSAT MSS data for two Mississippi Sound missions

Virus protein transport across the gut epithelium of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

A wide range of proteins move via vesicular transport across insect gut epithelial cells for release into the hemocoel. The utility of such transcytosed proteins for delivery of insect-specific neurotoxins from the gut into the hemocoel of aphids has recently been demonstrated for the plant lectin, Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) and for an aphid-transmitted, plant virus coat protein. Proteins that transcytose across the insect gut epithelium allow for appropriate delivery of toxins that are active within the hemocoel, providing a new approach toward development of pest resistant crops. We used an Ussing chamber to examine the efficiencies and transport mechanisms involved with the movement of various proteins across the gut of Spodoptera frugiperda. Test proteins, which included GNA, bovine serum albumin and virus-derived coat proteins, were labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate or eGFP for ease of detection. There was wide variation in the efficacy of transport of different proteins across the epithelial layer. The mechanisms involved with transport were investigated by addition of inhibitors into the Ussing chamber. Results will be discussed in relation to the potential exploitation of these proteins and pathways for insect pest management

Imagine: A Critical Examination of Activist Methods

Activists perpetually seek new methods for confronting, reducing, and ultimately ending animal/anymal exploitation. Powerful industries repeatedly work to shut down every means that activists adopt. Through creative analogy, this piece facilitates critical analysis of one of the contemporary movement’s most popular methods of direct action

Why This Post Now? : Dramaturging Politics and Social Media

    Get PDF
Political events have always been influenced by the media, but social media has provided a much stronger influence than the typical newspaper or radio. Users of social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) have the opportunity to share whatever they want, to whoever they want, whenever they want. While social media has given immense opportunity for artists and creators alike, it has also given way for creators to participate in uninformed performance, whether intended or not, with their content. Are social media consumers considering whether content, specifically political content, is actually true or are they accepting it at face value? Political events are being exacerbated by the influence of uninformed performance. From broadcasted political debates, twitter feuds, and family dinners, “controversial” political topics are causing tears in the fabric which has held this nation together. Social media is, moment to moment, shaping the political agenda and contributing to a society filled with emotionally driven misinformation. I am proposing the application of a dramaturgical perspective for consumers when approaching political social media. Dramaturgy is the theatrical study of how theater text or work contributes to the world we live in and how we can analyze theatre to give integrity to the authenticity of the story. I am curious if using a dramaturgical lens in social media consumption will help promote analysis of information, furthering informed performance, and providing a space for compromise. In my project I will be using my skills as a theatre artist to dramaturgically analyze political content which was clearly influenced by social media. I hope that my project simply showcases how using a dramaturgical mindset can help media users successfully navigate informed and uninformed political content while also giving creators an example of how to devise informed performance
