Nonlinear optical response of wave packets on quantized potential energy surfaces
We calculated the dynamics of nuclear wave packets in coupled
electron-vibration systems and their nonlinear optical responses. We found that
the quantized nature of the vibrational modes is observed in pump-probe spectra
particularly in weakly interacting electron-vibration systems such as cyanine
dye molecules. Calculated results based on a harmonic potential model and
molecular orbital calculations are compared with experimental results, and we
also found that the materials parameters regarding with the geometrical
structure of potential energy surfaces are directly determined by accurate
measurement of time-resolved spectra.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Thickness optimization of the output power and effective thermoelectric figure of merit of thin thermoelectric generator
The conventional thermoelectric figure of merit and the power factor are not
sufficient as a measure of thin film quality of thermoelectric materials, where
the power conversion efficiency depends on the film dimensions. By considering
the film size, the effective thermoelectric figure of merit and effective
Seebeck coefficient are introduced to guarantee that the maximum energy
conversion efficiency increases as the effective thermoelectric figure of merit
increases. Similarly, the effective power factor is defined. By introducing
typical material properties for BiTe and PEDOT, we study the thickness
dependence of the effective figure of merit and the effective power factor.Comment: 4 figure
Diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma invading subarachnoid space
We report herein an unusual case of diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma involving the brain, which caused a patient’s death 27 months after enucleation. An eight-year-old boy complained of blurred vision in his right eye (OD) in October 2006. Funduscopic examination showed optic disc swelling, dense whitish vitreous opacity, and an orange-colored subretinal elevated lesion adjacent to the optic disc. Fluorescein angiography revealed hyperfluorescence in the peripapillary region at an early-phase OD. Because the size of the subretinal lesion and vitreous opacity gradually increased, he was referred to us. His visual acuity was 20/1000 OD on June 20, 2007. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy showed a dense anterior vitreous opacity. Ophthalmoscopically, the subretinal orange-colored area spread out until reaching the mid peripheral region. A B-mode sonogram and computed tomography showed a thick homogeneous lesion without calcification. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed a markedly enhanced appearance of the underlying posterior retina. Enucleation of the right eye was performed nine months after the initial presentation. Histopathology demonstrated retinal detachment and a huge choroidal mass invading the optic nerve head. The tumor was consistent with diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma. The patient died due to brain involvement 27 months after enucleation. Ophthalmologists should be aware that diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma may show an unfavorable course if its diagnosis is delayed
A crib-shaped triplet pairing gap function for an orthogonal pair of quasi-one dimensional Fermi surfaces in SrRuO
The competition between spin-triplet and singlet pairings is studied
theoretically for the tight-binding - bands in SrRuO,
which arise from two sets of quasi-one dimensional Fermi surfaces. Using
multiband FLEX approximation, where we incorporate an anisotropy in the spin
fluctuations as suggested from experiments, we show that (i) the triplet can
dominate over the singlet (which turns out to be extended s), and (ii) the
triplet gap function optimized in the Eliashberg equation has an unusual, very
non-sinusoidal form, whose time-reversal-broken combination exhibits a
crib-shaped amplitude with dips.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, to appear in Phys.Rev.B (Rapid Communications
Integrin Inhibitor Suppresses Bevacizumab-Induced Glioma Invasion
Glioblastoma is known to secrete high levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and clinical studies with bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody to VEGF, have demonstrated convincing therapeutic benefits in glioblastoma patients. However, its induction of invasive proliferation has also been reported. We examined the effects of treatment with cilengitide, an integrin inhibitor, on bevacizumab-induced invasive changes in glioma. U87 Delta EGFR cells were stereotactically injected into the brain of nude mice or rats. Five days after tumor implantation, cilengitide and bevacizumab were administered intraperitoneally three times a week. At 18 days after tumor implantation, the brains were removed and observed histopathologically. Next, the bevacizumab and cilengitide combination group was compared to the bevacizumab monotherapy group using microarray analysis. Bevacizumab treatment led to increased cell invasion in spite of decreased angiogenesis. When the rats were treated with a combination of bevacizumab and cilengitide, the depth of tumor invasion was significantly less than with only bevacizumab. Pathway analysis demonstrated the inhibition of invasion-associated genes such as the integrin-mediated cell adhesion pathway in the combination group. This study showed that the combination of bevacizumab with cilengitide exerted its anti-invasive effect. The elucidation of this mechanism might contribute to the treatment of bevacizumab-refractory glioma
