    Effect of Wheelchair Running on Recovery of Blood Lactate and Physical Performance after High-Intensity Intermittent Exercise – An Experimental Trial

    Background and Purpose: Repetitive sprint sport players perform high intensity exercise only for a small percentage of a total game and such periods are often instrumental in determining the eventual outcome. Recovery is a key factor for performance, and constant lack of recovery or insufficient recovery turns into overtraining which is detrimental in achieving peak performance. The purpose was to find out the effect of wheelchair running on the physical performance recovery after high-intensity intermittent exercise. Method: Ten sportsmen having the age range from 20 to 29, VO2max Ranges from 60.51 to 64.29 were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. After filling pre-participation questionnaire and 30-min of supine rest, Blood lactate and the field tests for the measurement of static balance, power, speed and agility were applied. The subjects were made to run in the treadmill and to increase the intensity to reach the Target Heart Rate (THR). After 1-min the subjects were given rest for 15-s and after that they started exercise again and thus the subjects completed several bouts of such exercises until exhaustion followed by either Passive rest or wheelchair running for the duration of 10 minutes. Parameters were measures after completed the exercise bout and after the recovery. Results: After the recovery in experimental group significant improvement found only in blood lactate (p<0.01) and no significant changes found in other parameters while in control group no significant changes found in all parameters. There was no significant difference found in all the parameters including blood lactate between the groups. Conclusion: Both wheelchair running and passive recovery are same in the efficiency of blood lactate removal and restoration of physical performance following intense intermittent exercise

    Local Graph Coloring and Index Coding

    We present a novel upper bound for the optimal index coding rate. Our bound uses a graph theoretic quantity called the local chromatic number. We show how a good local coloring can be used to create a good index code. The local coloring is used as an alignment guide to assign index coding vectors from a general position MDS code. We further show that a natural LP relaxation yields an even stronger index code.     Graph Theory versus Minimum Rank for Index Coding

    We obtain novel index coding schemes and show that they provably outperform all previously known graph theoretic bounds proposed so far. Further, we establish a rather strong negative result: all known graph theoretic bounds are within a logarithmic factor from the chromatic number. This is in striking contrast to minrank since prior work has shown that it can outperform the chromatic number by a polynomial factor in some cases.     On Approximating the Sum-Rate for Multiple-Unicasts

    We study upper bounds on the sum-rate of multiple-unicasts. We approximate the Generalized Network Sharing Bound (GNS cut) of the multiple-unicasts network coding problem with kk independent sources. Our approximation algorithm runs in polynomial time and yields an upper bound on the joint source entropy rate, which is within an O(log⁑2k)O(\log^2 k) factor from the GNS cut. It further yields a vector-linear network code that achieves joint source entropy rate within an O(log⁑2k)O(\log^2 k) factor from the GNS cut, but \emph{not} with independent sources: the code induces a correlation pattern among the sources. Our second contribution is establishing a separation result for vector-linear network codes: for any given field F\mathbb{F} there exist networks for which the optimum sum-rate supported by vector-linear codes over F\mathbb{F} for independent sources can be multiplicatively separated by a factor of k1βˆ’Ξ΄k^{1-\delta}, for any constant Ξ΄>0{\delta>0}, from the optimum joint entropy rate supported by a code that allows correlation between sources. Finally, we establish a similar separation result for the asymmetric optimum vector-linear sum-rates achieved over two distinct fields Fp\mathbb{F}_{p} and Fq\mathbb{F}_{q} for independent sources, revealing that the choice of field can heavily impact the performance of a linear network code.Comment: 10 pages; Shorter version appeared at ISIT (International Symposium on Information Theory) 2015; some typos correcte

    Fisheries Stakeholders and Their Livelihoods in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

    Fisheries Management for Sustainable Livelihoods (FIMSUL), is a project implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the Government of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in India under the World Bank Trust Fund. The project aims at establishing frameworks, processes and building capacities of various stakeholders especially the Government, to facilitate the planning, design and implementation of appropriate fisheries development and management policies. The project includes a series of stakeholder consultations and consensus building apart from detailed review and analysis in the areas of stakeholders, livelihoods, policy, legal and institutional frame work and fisheries management. Based on this, the project comes up with various options. Stakeholder and livelihoods analysis is an essential part of the project. Hence, the team developed a detailed methodology for stakeholder consultations which includes district level stake holder consultation, focus group discussions, household interviews and validation meetings. The stakeholder and livelihoods analysis following the above steps were done through six NGO partners working along the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry who were initially trained on the methodology. The NGO partners : PLANT, GUIDE, FERAL, SIFFS, DHAN Foundation and TMSSS, especially a team of dedicated staff engaged by them had done an excellent work in completing comprehensive field exercises and bringing out 12 district/regional reports. These are published separately. This report is a compilation, and complete analysis of the stakeholders and livelihoods based on all the field level consultations.This report is expected to be an important reference to primary stakeholders' perspective of the important stakeholders in the sector, the livelihoods and livelihoods changes, the adaptive and coping mechanism, the relationships between the stakeholders and their hopes and aspirations. For any development intervention for any sector or stakeholder group, region-wise in marine fisheries in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the information from this report could be an important starting point
