    From an axiological standpoint

    Get PDF
I maintain that intrinsic value is the fundamental concept of axiology. Many contemporary philosophers disagree; they say the proper object of value theory is final value. I examine three accounts of the nature of final value: the first claims that final value is non‐instrumental value; the second claims that final value is the value a thing has as an end; the third claims that final value is ultimate or non‐derivative value. In each case, I argue that the concept of final value described is either identical with the classical notion of intrinsic value or is not a plausible candidate for the primary concept of axiology

Allelic forms of the knob associated histidine-rich protein gene of Plasmodium falciparum

AbstractThe knob associated histidine-rich protein (KAHRP) gene was cloned and sequenced from two Indian isolates of Plasmodium falciparum, Pf3-92 and Pf29-92. These isolates showed major sequence differences in the C-terminal repeat domain of KAHRP. However, the biologically important domains such as spectrin-actin binding region remained highly conserved. The PCR amplification of a variable C-terminal repeat domain from the clinical isolates of P. falciparum, from Rajasthan epidemic, showed the presence of multiple alleles of KAHRP gene. The presence of multiple alleles indicates the existence of several P. falciparum strains in India. This should be taken into account for future malaria control strategies such as molecular therapy and vaccines

Dimensional Reduction applied to QCD at three loops

    Get PDF
Dimensional Reduction is applied to \qcd{} in order to compute various renormalization constants in the \drbar{} scheme at higher orders in perturbation theory. In particular, the ÎČ\beta function and the anomalous dimension of the quark masses are derived to three-loop order. Special emphasis is put on the proper treatment of the so-called Ï”\epsilon-scalars and the additional couplings which have to be considered.Comment: 13 pages, minor changes, references adde

Ultra Wideband Channel Characterization and Ranging in Data Centers

    Get PDF
This paper presents a detailed measurement based characterization of the Ultra Wideband (UWB) channels in a data center environment and examines the accuracy of direct ranging using Time of Arrival (ToA) measurements. Modern data centers present a unique indoor environment that to our knowledge has not yet been characterized. Our ranging experiments indicate that it is possible to achieve an accuracy of fraction of a meter via direct ranging and point to the feasibility of locating individual servers using more sophisticated cooperative ranging

Optical phonons, spin correlations, and spin-phonon coupling in the frustrated pyrochlore magnets CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4

We report on infrared, Raman, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 single crystals. We estimate the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor exchange constants from the magnetic susceptibility and extract the spin-spin correlation functions obtained from the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat. By comparing with the frequency shift of the infrared optical phonons above TN , we derive estimates for the spin-phonon coupling constants in these systems. The observation of phonon modes which are both Raman and infrared active suggest the loss of inversion symmetry below the Neel temperature in CdCr2O4 in agreement with theoretical predictions by Chern and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 74, 060405 (2006)]. In ZnCr2O4 several new modes appear below TN, but no phonon modes could be detected which are both Raman and infrared active indicating the conservation of inversion symmetry in the low temperature phase.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure

We describe and present detailed performance characterizations for an enhanced version of our MEMS-Based Phase-Shifting Interferometer (MBPSI) that achieves 13 times denser motion reconstruction than our original system. We measure the noise level to be ≀±6 nm λ for a 660 nm laser), and the frequency-resolution to be ≀ 0.03Hz for 31Hz motion captured at 300Hz. We have successfully tracked a piezo-based actuator, driven with an arbitrary waveform composed of transients ≀10Hz

Spectral origin of the colossal magnetodielectric effect in multiferroic DyMn2O5

The origin of the colossal magnetodielectric effect in DyMn2O5 [1] has been an outstanding question in multiferroics. Here, we report the activation of the electric dipole mode at 4-5 cm-1 in an applied magnetic field which fully accounts for the CMD effect. We examine two alternative explanations of this mode: an electromagnon and transitions between f-electron levels of Dy3+ ions. The experimental and theoretical evidence supports the electromagnon origin of the CMD effect.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
