Magnetic field dependence of charge stripe order in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8)
We have carried out a detailed investigation of the magnetic field dependence
of charge ordering in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8) utilizing high-resolution x-ray
scattering. We find that the charge order correlation length increases as the
magnetic field greater than ~5T is applied in the superconducting phase (T=2K).
The observed unusual field dependence of the charge order correlation length
suggests that the static charge stripe order competes with the superconducting
ground state in this sample.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetic properties of the overdoped superconductor LaSrCuO with and without Zn impurities
The magnetic properties of the Zn-substituted overdoped high-
superconductor LaSrCuZnO have been studied by
magnetization measurements and neutron scattering. Magnetization measurements
reveal that for Zn-free samples with a Curie term is induced in
the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility implying the
existence of local paramagnetic moments. The induced Curie constant corresponds
to a moment of 0.5 per additional Sr ion that exceeds .
Zn-substitution in the overdoped \lsco also induces a Curie term that
corresponds to 1.2 per Zn ion, simultaneously suppressing .
The relationship between and the magnitude of the Curie term for Zn-free
\lsco with and for Zn-substituted \lsco with are
closely similar. This signifies a general competitive relationship between the
superconductivity and the induced paramagnetic moment. Neutron scattering
measurements show that Zn-substitution in overdoped \lsco anomalously enhances
the inelastic magnetic scattering spectra around the position,
peaking at meV. These facts are discussed on the basis of a
"swiss-cheese" model of Zn-substituted systems as well as a microscopic phase
separation scenario in the overdoped region indicated by muon-spin-relaxation
measurements.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

Selective and Genetic Constraints on Pneumococcal Serotype Switching
Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates typically express one of over 90 immunologically distinguishable polysaccharide capsules (serotypes), which can be classified into “serogroups” based on cross-reactivity with certain antibodies. Pneumococci can alter their serotype through recombinations affecting the capsule polysaccharide synthesis (cps) locus. Twenty such “serotype switching” events were fully characterised using a collection of 616 whole genome sequences from systematic surveys of pneumococcal carriage. Eleven of these were within-serogroup switches, representing a highly significant (p < 0.0001) enrichment based on the observed serotype distribution. Whereas the recombinations resulting in between-serogroup switches all spanned the entire cps locus, some of those that caused within-serogroup switches did not. However, higher rates of within-serogroup switching could not be fully explained by either more frequent, shorter recombinations, nor by genetic linkage to genes involved in β–lactam resistance. This suggested the observed pattern was a consequence of selection for preserving serogroup. Phenotyping of strains constructed to express different serotypes in common genetic backgrounds was used to test whether genotypes were physiologically adapted to particular serogroups. These data were consistent with epistatic interactions between the cps locus and the rest of the genome that were specific to serotype, but not serogroup, meaning they were unlikely to account for the observed distribution of capsule types. Exclusion of these genetic and physiological hypotheses suggested future work should focus on alternative mechanisms, such as host immunity spanning multiple serotypes within the same serogroup, which might explain the observed pattern

Survival, Treatment Patterns, and Identifying Predictors of Receipt of Adjuvant Therapy and Survival for Curative-intent Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: A Population-based Analysis
Introduction: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in North America.
Methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective observational cohort trial of patients undergoing resection of PC in the province of Ontario, Canada between 2005-2010. The study involved linkage of administrative datasets, and abstraction of resection specimen pathology reports. Overall survival (OS) and receipt of adjuvant treatment were the primary outcomes in this study. Adjuvant treatment was classified as chemotherapy (CT) or chemoradiation therapy (CRT).
Results: While adjuvant CT or CRT were not associated with improved OS, those with node-negative disease benefited from adjuvant CT. Histopathologic factors were the strongest prognostic factors. Substantial variation in the likelihood of receiving adjuvant treatment between different institutions treating PC was identified. Residential instability, material deprivation, rurality, and median income were associated with receipt of surgery among PC patients.
Conclusions: Outcomes following resection are primarily determined by tumour biology.M.Sc.2018-06-21 00:00:0
