Transboundary groundwater and international law: past practices and current implications
Despite their significance, physical interactions between surface and
groundwater have largely been ignored in international water law. While surface water
has been given considerable attention as a transboundary natural resource, groundwater
has not received the same recognition. International legal doctrines regarding water, such
as the 1997 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of
International Watercourses, only recognized one aspect of groundwater, excluding
confined aquifers. This study discusses how international freshwater treaties have
addressed groundwater resources in the past, and considers current trends. While the
issue of transboundary groundwater in international treaties is becoming increasingly
relevant as disputes over groundwater resources come to the fore, it is usually only
indirectly mentioned in treaties. Groundwater and surface water should be considered
together as part of the hydrological cycle and reflected as such in the legal realm. The
uncertainty of physical properties is not an excuse for the delay of a concrete framework.
The "precautionary principle" should play a role as a guiding factor. An Interactive
Coordinated Approach (ICA) is recommended as a guideline for future implementation
of transboundary groundwater management. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate
the need to develop comprehensive transboundary groundwater management schemes
Application of EQ bond coat to EB-PVD TBC systems
To prevent the formation of SRZ in the log-time high-temperature exposure of the turbine blades, thermodynamically equilibrium phase such as gamma-prime phase of the substrate is use as an oxidation-resistant bond coat. The previous study clarified that this EQ coating shows excellent interface stability and it does not degrade mechanical strength due to the SRZ formation. In this study, TBC life test of EB-PVD ceramics coated EQ coating is investigated with other conventional MCrAlY coatings. The 4th and 5th generation superalloys are used for substrates. About 150 μm thick of EQ coating, conventional NiCoCrAlY and CoNiCrAlY coating are deposited by LPPS and HVOF on the substrates. After polishing the surface of deposited bond coat, specimens are pre-oxidized in the EB-PVD chamber in 0.2 Pa of oxygen partial pressure. 150 μm thick of YSZ is deposited by EB-PVD on the pre-oxidized bond coat, following the pre-oxidation. Samples are heat treated cyclically in an electric furnace at 1135 °C with 1 h cycles. Fast cooling rate is obtained by air blow with each cooling cycle. As a result, it is found that TBC life of LPPS EQ-coated TMS-138A showed over twice of other conventional bond coats. Interrupted and failed samples are observed by SEM and EPMA. The differences of bond coats and its deposition processes in the microstructure, TGO growth and TBC life are discussed. On the other hand, oxidation characteristics of YSZ-TBC and EQ bond coated substrate using burner rig developed by NIMS are discussed. And also the recycling of TBC with EQ bond coat is discussed
An Activation Method of Topic Dictionary to Expand Training Data for Trend Rule Discovery
This paper improves a method which predicts whether evaluation objects such as companies and products are to be attractive in near future. The attractiveness is evaluated by trend rules. The trend rules represent relationships among evaluation objects, keywords, and numerical changes related to the evaluation objects. They are inductively acquired from text sequential data and numerical sequential data. The method assigns evaluation objects to the text sequential data by activating a topic dictionary. The dictionary describes keywords representing the numerical change. It can expand the amount of the training data. It is anticipated that the expansion leads to the acquisition of more valid trend rules. This paper applies the method to a task which predicts attractive stock brands based on both news headlines and stock price sequences. It shows that the method can improve the detection performance of evaluation objects through numerical experiments
Lifelong persistent infection of hamster brain by human adenovirus type 6.
To establish an experimental persistent infection of the brain with human adenoviruses, adenovirus type 6 (ad 6) was inoculated intracerebrally into young adult hamsters. Hamsters appeared languid for a few days after inoculation, but recovered rapidly. By cocultivation of tissue fragments with HeLa cells, ad 6 was always recovered from the brains of hamsters throughout their lives, as long as 29 months, indicating the establishment of a lifelong persistent infection. Except for the first few days after inoculation, however, attempts to recover virus by inoculation of tissue extracts onto HeLa cells or by cultivation of tissue fragments alone were unsuccessful.</p
Potential Role of the Intratumoral Microbiota in Prognosis of Head and Neck Cancer
The tumor microbiome, a relatively new research field, affects tumor progression through several mechanisms. The Cancer Microbiome Atlas (TCMA) database was recently published. In the present study, we used TCMA and The Cancer Genome Atlas and examined microbiome profiling in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the role of the intratumoral microbiota in the prognosis of HNSCC patients, and differentially expressed genes in tumor cells in relation to specific bacterial infections. We investigated 18 microbes at the genus level that differed between solid normal tissue (n = 22) and primary tumors (n = 154). The tissue microbiome profiles of Actinomyces, Fusobacterium, and Rothia at the genus level differed between the solid normal tissue and primary tumors of HNSCC patients. When the prognosis of groups with rates over and under the median for each microbe at the genus level was examined, rates for Leptotrichia which were over the median correlated with significantly higher overall survival rates. We then extracted 35 differentially expressed genes between the over- and under-the-median-for-Leptotrichia groups based on the criteria of >1.5 fold and p < 0.05 in the Mann–Whitney U-test. A pathway analysis showed that these Leptotrichia-related genes were associated with the pathways of Alzheimer disease, neurodegeneration-multiple diseases, prion disease, MAPK signaling, and PI3K-Akt signaling, while protein–protein interaction analysis revealed that these genes formed a dense network. In conclusion, probiotics and specific antimicrobial therapy targeting Leptotrichia may have an impact on the prognosis of HNSCC.Hamada M., Inaba H., Nishiyama K., et al.
