MovieMaker: A Parallel Movie-Making Software for Large Scale Simulations

We have developed a parallel rendering software for scientific visualization of large-scale, three-dimensional, time development simulations. The goal of this software, MovieMaker, is to generate a movie, or a series of visualization images from totally one TB-scale data within one night (or less than 12 hours). The isocontouring, volume rendering, and streamlines are implemented. MovieMaker is a parallel program for the shared memory architecture with dynamic load balancing and overlapped disk I/O.Comment: 3pages, 5figures, submitted to J. Spreading of Antarctic Bottom Water examined using the CFC-11 distribution simulated by an eddy-resolving OGCM

We have investigated the spreading and pathway of Antarctic Bottom Water(AABW) using the simulated distribution of chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) in a global eddy-resolving(1/10°) OGCM. Our goal is understanding of the processes and pathways determining the distribution of CFCs in the Southern Ocean, where much of this tracer is entrained by formation of deep and bottom water. The simu- lated high CFC-11 water reveals the newly formed AABW around the Antarctic Continent. The main source regions of AABW in the model are in the Weddell Sea(60°- 30°W ), offshore of Wilkes Land(120°- 160°E ) and in the Ross Sea(170°E -160°W ). In our model, spreading of simulated CFC-11 in the deep Southern Ocean from the newly formed AABW regions is more similar to the observed distribution than in coarse-resolution models. In the Weddell Sea, the high CFC-11 water spreads eastward with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(ACC) and flows northward to the Argentine Basin. The high CFC-11 water from Wilkes Land joins with the high CFC-11 water from the Ross Sea. Some of the high CFC-11 water from Wilkes Land flows northward toward New Zealand. The high CFC-11 water from the Ross Sea flows eastward with the ACC along the Mid Ocean Ridge and northward to the Southeast Pacific Basin

Improvement in Frailty in a Patient With Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease After Ninjin'yoeito Therapy: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Frailty is a poor prognostic factor in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although various studies have assessed the effects of conventional treatment with bronchodilators, nutritional support, and pulmonary rehabilitation for frailty in patients with COPD, none have addressed the effects of traditional Japanese medicine (Kampo medicine). Herein, we report the successful management of frailty using Ninjin'yoeito therapy in a 76-year-old patient with COPD. Despite being prescribed multiple bronchodilators, nutritional supplement therapy, patient education, and pulmonary rehabilitation, the patient exhibited unintentional weight loss, low energy, and low physical activity. Ninjin'yoeito was prescribed and these subjective symptoms began to improve 1 month after treatment initiation. In 6 months, the patient reported no frailty, had increased muscle mass, and had achieved an almost normal healthy state. Ninjin'yoeito has been associated with both physical effects, such as improvement in overall physical strength and appetite, and reduction in fatigue, and psychological effects, such as greater motivation and reduction of depression and anxiety symptoms. Physicians have usually treated COPD primarily with organ-specific treatments, such as bronchodilators; however, addressing both the physiological and psychological vulnerability has been difficult. This case report illustrates the potential usefulness of Ninjin'yoeito treatment for frailty in patients with COPD

ObjectiveTP53, a well-known tumor-suppressor gene in bladder carcinogenesis, has a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism on codon 72. The aim of this study was to elucidate the association between TP53 codon 72 polymorphism and somatic mutations in bladder cancer.Material and methodsGermline TP53 codon 72 polymorphism and somatic mutations of 50 cancer-associated genes were analyzed in 103 bladder cancer patients (59 non-muscle-invasive and 44 muscle-invasive), using Taqman genotyping assay and target sequencing, respectively. The expression of FGF-FGFR signaling pathway genes was analyzed by RNA sequencing of frozen tissue.ResultsThe allele frequency of TP53 codon 72 in our cohort was 37, 42, and 21% for Arg/Arg, Arg/Pro, and Pro/Pro, respectively. Interestingly, the prevalence of FGFR3 mutation was higher in patients with the Arg allele, whereas that of the RAS mutation was higher in patients without the Arg allele. The same association was seen in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) patients and no differences were observed in muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients. In NMIBC, FGFR1 expression was higher in patients without the Arg allele and FGFR3 expression was higher in patients with the Arg allele.ConclusionThe germline TP53 codon 72 polymorphism was associated with mutations of FGFR3 or RAS and expression of FGFR1 and FGFR3 in NMIBC. These findings provide new insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the influence of the genetic background on carcinogenesis in bladder cancer

Relationship between barrier discharge characteristics and ozone generation under ac voltage application has been investigated for triple needles-plane configuration with two different needle-tip radii (r=l5, 80μm) in dry air. Characteristics of barrier discharge and ozone generation depend on the needle-tip radius. Especially, ozone concentration and ozone generation efficiency for the triple needles with r=80μm were higher than those for the needles with r=l5μm. These results can be interpreted by the effect of the space charges and accumulated charges induced by corona discharge and barrier discharge on the space for ozone generation

A relation of barrier discharge characteristics to ozone generation under ac voltage application has been investigated for various distances between three needle-tips (d=0mm~7.0mm) at constant distance between needle tip and plane (g=3.0mm) in dry air. Characteristics of the barrier discharge and ozone generation are changed by the needle-tips distance. Those changes have been caused by the influence of tip needle each other and distance between three needle-tips. It is considered that the influence is caused by space charge and accumulated charge suggested from discharge image by still camera and CCD camera. And ozone generation efficiency was estimated by power consumption and ozone concentration. As a result, when the distance between three needle-tips is narrow, the above-mentioned influence is strengthened. And in this case, ozone generation efficiency improves
