The Distribution and Habitat Selection of Introduced Eastern Grey Squirrels, Sciurus carolinensis, in British Columbia

Eastern Grey Squirrels were first introduced to Vancouver in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia in 1909. A separate introduction to Metchosin in the Victoria region occurred in 1966. I surveyed the distribution and habitat selection of Eastern Grey Squirrels in both locales. Eastern Grey Squirrels spread throughout both regions over a period of 30 years and were found predominantly in residential land types. Some natural features and habitats, such as mountains, large bodies of water, and coniferous forests, have acted as barriers to expansion for Eastern Grey Squirrels. Given that urbanization is replacing conifer forests throughout southern British Columbia, it is predicted that Eastern Grey Squirrels will continue to spread as habitat barriers are removed

Space and surface power for the space exploration initiative: Results from project outreach

The analysis and evaluations of the Space and Surface Power panel, one of eight panels created by RAND to screen and analyze submissions to the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) Outreach Program, is documented. In addition to managing and evaluating the responses, or submissions, to this public outreach program, RAND conducted its own analysis and evaluation relevent to SEI mission concepts, systems, and technologies. The Power panel screened and analyzed submissions for which a substantial portion of the concepts involved power generation sources, transmission, distribution, thermal management, and handling of power (including conditioning, conversion, packaging, and enhancements in system components). A background discussion of the areas the Power panel covered and the issues the reviewers considered pertinent to the analysis of power submissions are presented. An overview of each of the highest-ranked submissions and then a discussion of these submissions is presented. The results of the analysis is presented

Mass production of Penaeus monodon Fabricius juveniles in earthen nursery ponds

Different culture techniques were tried for rearing larvae of Penaeus monodon, in order to obtain preliminary data on stocking density, water management, fertilization versus feeding and effect of different types of vertical substrate. The results of the experiments showed that: (1) older fry have greater chances of survival; (2) the traditional nursery pond designs and practices used for milkfish in the Philippines are applicable to prawn only at very low densities and give acceptable high survival rates only when used with the older postlarval stage

A Right to Choose: A Multi-Modal Approach to Improve Advance Directive Completion Rates

ABSTRACT Purpose: Advance Directives (AD) ensure that patients receive care consistent with their individual values, while also minimizing the decisional burden often placed on families when a patient’s wishes are not documented at the end of their life. This quality improvement (QI) project was intended to improve patients’ overall understanding of Advance directives (AD) and improve completion rates in a primary care setting for patients eighty years and above using a multimodal system. Methods: This QI project occurred in a primary care setting from March 2016 through March 2017. The multi-modal approach used included contacting patients by telephone, mailing AD informational packets prior to scheduled visit, in office AD discussions and follow-up phone calls. Collected data included patients’ age, provider, status of AD completion, multi-modal approach used and patients’ availability for discussion. Patients included were eighty and above and did not have a documented AD. Results: Pre-implementation, two participating providers had a 23.81% & 20.0% AD completion rate for patients eighty and above. Post-implementation, participating providers increased to 60.71% and 38.71% respectively. Conclusions: A multi-modal approach with structured education on the topic of ADs and providers’ recognition of patients in need of ADs, resulted in improved rates of AD completion, while also facilitating patient centered care.
