    Positive for youth work? Contested terrains of professional youth work in austerity England

It reflects on youth work's persistently anomalous position in the division of labour. Since their achievement of a contested professional status in the 1960s and 1970s, youth workers have pursued an occupational ideology that draws principally on a romantic humanism. Until recently, this provided a relatively stable basis to their practices. Under a dominant contemporary neo-liberalism, influential in different ways across Europe, youth work has been subjected to a range of managerialist practices that have further exposed its ambiguity as a profession. Austerity policy, enacted under the Coalition government, has further weakened professional youth work's position in the welfare division of labour. The article points to resistance to austerity on the part of some youth workers and speculates on the possible future of professional youth work in a policy regime that has little sympathy for the public professions

    Behavioural Response Thresholds in New Zealand Crab Megalopae to Ambient Underwater Sound

    A small number of studies have demonstrated that settlement stage decapod crustaceans are able to detect and exhibit swimming, settlement and metamorphosis responses to ambient underwater sound emanating from coastal reefs. However, the intensity of the acoustic cue required to initiate the settlement and metamorphosis response, and therefore the potential range over which this acoustic cue may operate, is not known. The current study determined the behavioural response thresholds of four species of New Zealand brachyuran crab megalopae by exposing them to different intensity levels of broadcast reef sound recorded from their preferred settlement habitat and from an unfavourable settlement habitat. Megalopae of the rocky-reef crab, Leptograpsus variegatus, exhibited the lowest behavioural response threshold (highest sensitivity), with a significant reduction in time to metamorphosis (TTM) when exposed to underwater reef sound with an intensity of 90 dB re 1 µPa and greater (100, 126 and 135 dB re 1 µPa). Megalopae of the mud crab, Austrohelice crassa, which settle in soft sediment habitats, exhibited no response to any of the underwater reef sound levels. All reef associated species exposed to sound levels from an unfavourable settlement habitat showed no significant change in TTM, even at intensities that were similar to their preferred reef sound for which reductions in TTM were observed. These results indicated that megalopae were able to discern and respond selectively to habitat-specific acoustic cues. The settlement and metamorphosis behavioural response thresholds to levels of underwater reef sound determined in the current study of four species of crabs, enables preliminary estimation of the spatial range at which an acoustic settlement cue may be operating, from 5 m to 40 km depending on the species. Overall, these results indicate that underwater sound is likely to play a major role in influencing the spatial patterns of settlement of coastal crab species

    The influence of risk factors associated with captive rearing on post-release survival in translocated cirl buntings Emberiza cirlus in the UK

    Population decline resulting from agricultural intensification led to contraction of the range of the cirl bunting Emberiza cirlus in the UK to a small area of south Devon. As part of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for the species, a project to re-establish a population in suitable habitat in Cornwall was undertaken during 2006–2011, in which chicks were removed from the nest in Devon, hand-reared and then delayed-released. The survival of the birds to four time points in the year after release was analysed in relation to the effect of rearing factors, using a multivariable logistic regression model. Individuals with higher body weight at capture were more likely to survive to 1 January and 1 May in the year following release, and individuals released in June and July were more likely to survive than those released in August. Individuals released in 2006 and 2011 had a higher survival rate than those released during 2007–2010. Timing of capture, time spent at each stage in captivity, medication and the detection of parasites in the brood had no significant effect. Immunosuppressive disease, weather factors and predator activity may have led to some of the observed differences in survival. This analysis provides evidence with which to plan future translocation projects for cirl buntings and other passerine birds

    Mental health service acceptability for the armed forces veteran community

Adapting a Step 2 mental health service based on low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions to represent a familiar context and meet the needs of the armed forces veteran community may serve to enhance acceptability and reduce help-seeking barriers. Aims To examine acceptability of a Step 2 low-intensity CBT mental health service adapted for armed forces veterans and family members provided by a UK Armed Forces charity. Methods Qualitative study using individual semi-structured interviews with armed forces veterans and family members of those injured or becoming unwell while serving in the British Armed Forces. Data analysis was undertaken using thematic alongside disconfirming case analysis. Results Adapting a Step 2 mental health service for armed forces veterans and family members enhanced acceptability and promoted help-seeking. Wider delivery characteristics associated with Step 2 mental health services within the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme also contributed to service acceptability. However, limitations of Step 2 mental health service provision were also identified. Conclusion A Step 2 mental health service adapted for armed forces veterans and family members enhances acceptability and may potentially overcome help-seeking barriers. However, concerns remain regarding ways to accommodate the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and provide support for family members.Help for Heroe

    In 2005, a Marburg haemorrhagic fever (MHF) outbreak occurred in Uíge province, Angola, which had its epicentre in Uíge municipality. Concurrently, a health facility located a considerable distance from the outbreak's epicentre reported a drastic reduction in attendance, possibly due to a remote effect of the ongoing MHF outbreak. Health officials should devise strategies to ensure that communities far from a filovirus haemorrhagic fever epicentre are not adversely affected by interventions at the epicentre and, to the greatest extent possible, ensure that these peripheral communities receive essential medical care during an epidemic

    Optimal Scheduling of Trains on a Single Line Track

    This paper describes the development and use of a model designed to optimise train schedules on single line rail corridors. The model has been developed with two major applications in mind, namely: as a decision support tool for train dispatchers to schedule trains in real time in an optimal way; and as a planning tool to evaluate the impact of timetable changes, as well as railroad infrastructure changes. The mathematical programming model described here schedules trains over a single line track. The priority of each train in a conflict depends on an estimate of the remaining crossing and overtaking delay, as well as the current delay. This priority is used in a branch and bound procedure to allow and optimal solution to reasonable size train scheduling problems to be determined efficiently. The use of the model in an application to a 'real life' problem is discussed. The impacts of changing demand by increasing the number of trains, and reducing the number of sidings for a 150 kilometre section of single line track are discussed. It is concluded that the model is able to produce useful results in terms of optimal schedules in a reasonable time for the test applications shown here

    Low pressure drop respirator gas filters using adsorbent hollow fibres as an alternative to granular adsorbents

    Respirator users experience a physiological burden, one aspect of which is associated with breathing resistance from the filter. The current best practice of gas filters is to provide protection using 3adsorbent granule filled filters which, as the particle size decreases, have better adsorption kinetics, and hence longerbreakthrough times. However this comes at the price of an increasing pressure drop and hence greater breathing resistance. In this paper, adsorbent hollow fibres for use in respirator filters are presented as a potential alternative to the conventional granular cartridges. A comparison of hollow fibre and granular filter modules was carried out using scanning electron microscopy and dynamic ammonia challenge (800 ppm, 1 L/min). In addition the pressure drop was measured at flow rates between 0.5-5 L/min, and using these data,pressure drops at higher flow rates were predicted. The hollow fibres were demonstrated to compare favourably to a granular module of equal volume in terms of pressure drop, adsorption kinetics and breakthrough loading,although improvements still need to be made to hollow fibre breakthrough time, which is slightly lower than an equal volume pellet module as a result of the lower density of the hollow fibre filters. The qualities of hollow fibres will provide several options for novel filter design

    Computational study of structural and elastic properties of random AlGaInN alloys

    In this work we present a detailed computational study of structural and elastic properties of cubic AlGaInN alloys in the framework of Keating valence force field model, for which we perform accurate parametrization based on state of the art DFT calculations. When analyzing structural properties, we focus on concentration dependence of lattice constant, as well as on the distribution of the nearest and the next nearest neighbour distances. Where possible, we compare our results with experiment and calculations performed within other computational schemes. We also present a detailed study of elastic constants for AlGaInN alloy over the whole concentration range. Moreover, we include there accurate quadratic parametrization for the dependence of the alloy elastic constants on the composition. Finally, we examine the sensitivity of obtained results to computational procedures commonly employed in the Keating model for studies of alloys
