    Viroid infection and rootstocks affect productivity and fruit quality of the Tunisian citrus cultivar Maltaise demi sanguine

    In Tunisia, sweet orange citrus cultivars are usually grafted on sour orange rootstock. However, this rootstock is susceptible to Citrus tristeza virus (CTV). A trial was established in 2005 to evaluate the performance of newly introduced rootstocks compared to sour orange, using the sweet orange cultivar ‘Maltaise demi sanguine’ as the grafted scion. The effect of single or mixed viroid infections were monitored over 12 years. Once established, tree growth, cumulative yield, tree performance and fruit quality of ‘Maltaise sweet orange’ were assessed from 2008. Mixed viroid infections caused significant decreases (39 to 60%) in the canopy volume of ‘Maltaise’ grafted on Carrizo citrange, Swingle citrumelo, Cleopatra mandarin, Rangpur lime, Volkamer lemon and Trifoliate orange. The cumulative yield of trees grafted on’Alemow’ (Citrus macrophylla) and inoculated with Hop stunt viroid (HSVd) was 76% less than the healthy control. Mixed infections caused production decreases of 56% from trees grafted on Swingle citrumelo and 69% from those grafeted on Trifoliate orange. When quality parameters of fruit from trees infected with each viroid, and combinations of viroids were compared, no significant differences were recorded.

    Peripherally crowded cationic phthalocyanines as efficient photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy

    Photodynamic therapy is a treatment modality of cancer based on the production of cytotoxic species upon the light activation of photosensitizers. Zinc phthalocyanine photosensitizers bearing four or eight bulky 2,6-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenoxy substituents were synthesized, and pyridyl moieties were methylated. The quaternized derivatives did not aggregate at all in water and retained their good photophysical properties. High photodynamic activity of these phthalocyanines was demonstrated on HeLa, MCF-7, and EA.hy926 cells with a very low EC50 of 50 nM (for the MCF-7 cell line) upon light activation while maintaining low toxicity in the dark (TC50 ≈ 600 μM), giving thus good phototherapeutic indexes (TC50/EC50) above 1400. The compounds localized primarily in the lysosomes, leading to their rupture after light activation. This induced an apoptotic cell death pathway with secondary necrosis because of extensive and swift damage to the cells.     Assessment of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contamination of the Red Sea with Endemic Fish from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) as Bioindicator of Aquatic Environmental Pollution

    The aim of this study was to determine whether endemic coral fish commonly consumed by Jeddah residents could serve as bioindicators of oil contamination. In addition, we planned to investigate the relationship between amino acid changes and hydrocarbon concentrations in fish tissue. The composition of amino acids was analyzed using high-pressure liquid chromatography with precolumn derivatization. An analytical study of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and total petroleum hydrocarbons was conducted by combining gas chromatography with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Multivariate statistical analysis was applied using Statgraphics software to determine the impact of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and total petroleum hydrocarbons on the amino acid profile of three species of fish. In addition, the bioconcentration factor was estimated in the studied species and was used to validate the results obtained from the multivariate analysis. Based on the results of the study, the sum of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with two cycles, and with five to six cycles, is in reverse order in Plectropomus pessuliferus with respect to Epinephelus tauvina and Cephalopholis argus. The factor analysis showed high factor scores for aspartic acid, glutamic acid, tyrosine, chrysene, and total petroleum hydrocarbons, and for lipids and benzo(g,h,i)perylene, which could be explained by bioaccumulation. It was concluded that the high proportions of glutamic acid (8.32–11.10%) and aspartic acid (6.06–8.27%) in the muscles of the studied species are a sign of contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons. The incremental lifetime cancer risk values for the three endemic fish exceeded the limit value (>10−5), indicating a high potential cancer risk for the Saudi population

    The Development of a Life-Cycle-Based Sustainability Index That Incorporates Patient-Centredness for Assessing and Reporting the Sustainability of Healthcare Buildings in Saudi Arabia

    This study aims to develop and test a life-cycle-based sustainability index that incorporates patient-centredness for assessing and reporting the sustainability of healthcare buildings in Saudi Arabia. The research strategy follows a triangulation method approach to meet the objective of this research. Semi-structured interviews were initially employed in developing sustainable healthcare building indicators based on a previously conducted literature review that explored sustainable building in Saudi Arabia. Then, a scoping review protocol including the Delphi technique was used to develop patient-centredness care, PCC, indicators. Questionnaire surveys were also employed in data collection for industry investigation and patient involvement. Lastly, case study practice tests were conducted involving a specialised hospital and a pre-occupant hospital for indicator verification. A set of sustainability indicators were developed to assess and report the sustainability performance of healthcare buildings. Patient-centredness indicators were also developed and incorporated into the resulting index. A case study practice test was conducted to confirm the feasibility of all final resulting indicators. The research study contributes towards a holistic approach to assess and report sustainability in healthcare buildings incorporating patient-centredness. The objectives of the research include (1) the development of sustainable healthcare indicators (primary indicators); (2) the development of patient-centredness indicators (secondary indicators); and (3) indicator practice tests for validation. The resulting index could be implemented to assess and report sustainability in healthcare buildings, and it could be a pivotal step to shift to sustainable patient-centred healthcare buildings in Saudi Arabia
