The Nichols Wing Cutting Equipment
Described here is wing cutting equipment for the economical production of metal wings for wind tunnel models. The machine will make any size of constant-section wing or strut up to one-sixth inch chord by 36-inch span and up to a thickness of one and one-quarter inches. It cuts a smooth, true model that is accurate to within two-thousandths of an inch on any ordinate. The holding jaws are so designed as to leave the model free of chip marks, and the only hand finishing necessary after the cutting is a rub with amunite to remove burrs. The actual change on ordinate in this finishing rub is less than .0002 inches
Land of My Fathers? Economic Development, Ethnic Division and Ethnic National Identity in 32 Countries
We investigate the reasons why some people, and some countries, place greater or lesser emphasis on the idea that membership of a nation is tied to ancestry. We test the influence of two key factors - economic development and ethnic division. Economic development is strongly associated with support for the ancestry criterion of national membership. Those who are more economically secure, who grew up in wealthier nations, or live in a wealthier nation currently, are less likely to emphasise ancestry as an important factor in national identity. Those who have grown up since mass immigration to a country begun are also less likely to emphasise ancestry. However, we find no evidence that historical conditions are correlated with current national identity beliefs.National Identity, Comparative, Survey, Generational Change
Resilience of Hierarchical Critical Infrastructure Networks
Concern over the resilience of critical infrastructure networks has increased dramatically over the last decade due to a
number of well documented failures and the significant disruption associated with these. This has led to a large body of
research that has adopted graph-theoretic based analysis in order to try and improve our understanding of infrastructure
network resilience. Many studies have asserted that infrastructure networks possess a scale-free topology which is
robust to random failures but sensitive to targeted attacks at highly connected hubs. However, many studies have
ignored that many networks in addition to their topological connectivity may be organised either logically or spatially
in a hierarchical system which may significantly change their response to perturbations. In this paper we explore if
hierarchical network models exhibit significantly different higher-order topological characteristics compared to other
network structures and how this impacts on their resilience to a number of different failure types. This is achieved by
investigating a suite of synthetic networks as well as a suite of ‘real world’ spatial infrastructure networks

Below Horizon Aircraft Detection Using Deep Learning for Vision-Based Sense and Avoid
Commercial operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) would benefit from an
onboard ability to sense and avoid (SAA) potential mid-air collision threats.
In this paper we present a new approach for detection of aircraft below the
horizon. We address some of the challenges faced by existing vision-based SAA
methods such as detecting stationary aircraft (that have no relative motion to
the background), rejecting moving ground vehicles, and simultaneous detection
of multiple aircraft. We propose a multi-stage, vision-based aircraft detection
system which utilises deep learning to produce candidate aircraft that we track
over time. We evaluate the performance of our proposed system on real flight
data where we demonstrate detection ranges comparable to the state of the art
with the additional capability of detecting stationary aircraft, rejecting
moving ground vehicles, and tracking multiple aircraft
