    Reflectivities of uniform and broken stratiform clouds: An update

    The reflectivities of uniform and broken stratiform clouds obtained from the NOAA-9 and NOAA-10 overpasses collected during the FIRE Marine Stratocumulus Intensive Field Observations (IFO) were compared, and these reflectivities were compared with those obtained through radiative transfer calculation performed for plane-parallel cloud models. The objective was to determine the extent to which plane-parallel radiative transfer calculations could reproduce the reflectivities observed for uniform clouds and to determine the extent to which finite cloud effects cause broken clouds to reflect differently than uniform clouds. The latter study is to provide guidance in the parameterization of finite cloud effects in general circulation climate models as well as to assess the ability of plane-parallel theory, which is used by ISCCP to retrieve cloud properties, to treat the reflectivities of broken clouds. Some results from this study were reported at the last FIRE Science Team meeting and some were reported elsewhere (Coakley and Briegleb, 1989). Improvements since the previous reports include: (1) the analysis of additional satellite passes, and (2) a modification to the analysis which helps to show the significance of the differences in reflectivities for uniform and broken clouds

    Type Ia supernova diversity: Standardizing the candles

    Future use of type Ia supernovae for cosmology aims not only to determine the equation of state of dark energy, but also to constrain possible variations in its value. To achieve this goal, supernovae need to become better calibrated standard candles - not only to improve the precision of the measurement, but more importantly to gain better control over systematic uncertainties in order to ensure the accuracy of the result. Here we report on a project to quantify the diversity in type Ia supernovae, and to look for trends and/or sub-types that can be used to improve their calibration as standard candles. We implement a version of principal component analysis on type Ia supernova spectra. Although the quantity of data is not sufficient to draw any firm conclusions we show that this method holds promise for, at the very least, effectively separating peculiar supernovae. Whether it can be further used to improve the calibration of normal type Ia's remains a project for future study.Comment: Conference Proceedings.     Roughening and inclination of competition interfaces

    The competition interface between two growing ``Young clusters'' (diagrams), in a two-dimensional random cone, is mapped to the path of a second-class particle in the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. Using the asymptotics of the second class particle and hydrodynamic limits for the exclusion process (Burgers equation), we show that the behavior of the competition interface depends on the angle of the cone: for angles in [180^o, 270^o) the competition interface has a deterministic inclination, while for angles in [90^o,180^o) the inclination is random. We relate the competition model to a model of random directed polymers, and obtain some partial results for the fluctuations of the competition interface.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Inflating with the QCD Axion

    We show that the QCD axion can drive inflation via a series of tunneling events. For axion models with a softly broken ZNZ_N symmetry, the axion potential has a series of NN local minima and may be modeled by a tilted cosine. Chain inflation results along this tilted cosine: the field tunnels from an initial minimum near the top of the potential through a series of ever lower minima to the bottom. This results in sufficient inflation and reheating. QCD axions, potentially detectable in current searches, may thus simultaneously solve problems in particle physics and provide inflation.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, revised for submission to PR

    Exploring a cardio-thoracic hospital ward soundscape in relation to restoration

    Hospitals can provide stressful experiences for both patients and medical staff. A well-designed hospital soundscape should avoid adding to negative emotional states (e.g. stress), limit any detrimental cognitive effects (e.g. attentional fatigue), and enable restoration. Experiences of the cardio-thoracic ward soundscape, in a UK public University hospital, were explored via semi-structured interviews with 11 patients and 16 nurses. Thematic coding analysis resulted in 11 key themes including notions of restoration and emotional responses. The themes were used to develop a conceptual model to describe the processes involved in the perception and evaluation of the soundscape. The language used by patients and nurses indicated the emotional response to the soundscape was at times stressful and at others potentially restorative. Coping methods of accepting and habituating to individual sounds were noted. The impact of the patients' and nurses' ability to maintain these coping strategies are discussed in relation to restoration and the temporal variation of the soundscape. A period of 'quiet time' was in operation at the hospital and the importance of this was noted through various responses relating to emotion and restoration. The results suggest the soundscape has potentially, a beneficial role in facilitating restoration thus helping patients' recovery and medical staff's ability to remain productive. This research supports the need to study hospital soundscapes further so that design implications can be considered for the production of a more restorative environment, possibly through the masking/removal of unwanted sounds and optimising positive sounds

    Cosmological constraints from CMB distortion

    We examine bounds on adiabatic and isocurvature density fluctuations from μ\mu-type spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Studies of such distortion are complementary to CMB measurements of the spectral index and its running, and will help to constrain these parameters on significantly smaller scales. We show that a detection on the order of μ∼10−7\mu \sim 10^{-7} would strongly be at odds with the standard cosmological model of a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of adiabatic perturbations. Further, we find that given the current CMB constraints on the isocurvature mode amplitude, a nearly scale-invariant isocurvature mode (common in many curvaton models) cannot produce significant μ\mu-distortion.
