    YourMOOC4all: a recommender system for MOOCs based on collaborative filtering implementing UDL

    YourMOOC4all is a pilot research project to collect feedback requests regarding accessible design for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). In this online application, a specific website offers the possibility for any learner to freely judge if a particular MOOC complies Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. User feedback is of great value for the future development of MOOC platforms and MOOC educational resources, as it will help to follow De-sign for All guidelines. YourMOOC4all is a recommender system which gathers valuable information directly from learners to improve aspects such as the quality, accessibility and usability of this online learning environment. The final objective of collecting user’s feedback is to advice MOOC providers about the missing means for meeting learner needs. This paper describes the pedagogical and technological background of YourMOOC4all and its use cases

    Correlative electrochemical acoustic time-of-flight spectroscopy and X-ray imaging to monitor the performance of single-crystal and polycrystalline NMC811/Gr lithium-ion batteries

    LiNixMnyCozO2 (NMC) electrodes typically consist of anisotropic single-crystal primary particles aggregated to form polycrystalline secondary particles. Electrodes composed of polycrystalline NMC particles have a comparatively high gravimetric capacity and good rate capabilities but do not perform as well as single crystal equivalents in terms of volumetric energy density and cycling stability. This has prompted research into well-dispersed single-crystalline NMC products as an alternative solution for high-energy-density batteries. Here, for the first time known to the authors, electrochemical acoustic time-of-flight (EA-ToF) spectroscopy has been shown to be effective in distinguishing between Li-ion batteries composed of either single-crystal NMC811 (SC-NMC811) or polycrystalline NMC811 (PC-NMC811) electrodes. Cells composed of PC-NMC811 electrodes had a higher degree of gas evolution compared to cells containing SC-NMC811 electrodes. Cells composed of PC-NMC811 electrodes also underwent larger changes in the acoustic signal's time-of-flight (ToF) during constant current cycling at a range of C-rates indicating expansion, fracture or dislocation of the reflective interfaces inside the cell. In addition, X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) has been used to confirm significant morphological differences between SC-NMC811 electrodes and PC-NMC811 electrodes including the electrode's particle size distribution (PSD) that is suggested to have an effect on acoustic signal interaction with these electrode interfaces

    The yield of long-term electrocardiographic recordings in refractory focal epilepsy

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of clinically relevant arrhythmias in refractory focal epilepsy and to assess the potential of postictal arrhythmias as risk markers for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). METHODS: We recruited people with refractory focal epilepsy without signs of ictal asystole and who had at least one focal seizure per month and implanted a loop recorder with 2-year follow-up. The devices automatically record arrhythmias. Subjects and caregivers were instructed to make additional peri-ictal recordings. Clinically relevant arrhythmias were defined as asystole ≥ 6 seconds; atrial fibrillation 200 bpm and duration > 30 seconds; persistent sinus bradycardia < 40 bpm while awake; and second- or third-degree atrioventricular block and ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation. We performed 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) and tilt table testing to identify non-seizure-related causes of asystole. RESULTS: We included 49 people and accumulated 1060 months of monitoring. A total of 16 474 seizures were reported, of which 4679 were captured on ECG. No clinically relevant arrhythmias were identified. Three people had a total of 18 short-lasting (<6 seconds) periods of asystole, resulting in an incidence of 2.91 events per 1000 patient-months. None of these coincided with a reported seizure; one was explained by micturition syncope. Other non-clinically relevant arrhythmias included paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (n = 2), supraventricular tachycardia (n = 1), and sinus tachycardia with a right bundle branch block configuration (n = 1). SIGNIFICANCE: We found no clinically relevant arrhythmias in people with refractory focal epilepsy during long-term follow-up. The absence of postictal arrhythmias does not support the use of loop recorders in people at high SUDEP risk

    In the context of the triple burden of malnutrition: A systematic review of gene-diet interactions and nutritional status

    Genetic background interacts with dietary components to modulate nutritional health status. This study aimed to review the evidence for gene-diet interactions in all forms of malnutrition. A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted through April 2021 to identify observational and intervention studies reporting the effects of gene-diet interactions in over-nutrition, under-nutrition and micronutrient status. Risk of publication bias was assessed using the Quality Criteria Checklist and a tool specifically designed for gene-diet interaction research. 167 studies from 27 populations were included. The majority of studies investigated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in overnutrition (n = 158). Diets rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and low in total and saturated fats, such as Mediterranean and DASH diets, showed promising effects for reducing obesity risk among individuals who had higher genetic risk scores for obesity, particularly the risk alleles carriers of FTO rs9939609, rs1121980 and rs1421085. Other SNPs in MC4R, PPARG and APOA5 genes were also commonly studied for interaction with diet on overnutrition though findings were inconclusive. Only limited data were found related to undernutrition (n = 1) and micronutrient status (n = 9). The findings on gene-diet interactions in this review highlight the importance of personalized nutrition, and more research on undernutrition and micronutrient status is warranted

    How will transitioning from cytology to HPV testing change the balance between the benefits and harms of cervical cancer screening? Estimates of the impact on cervical cancer, treatment rates and adverse obstetric outcomes in Australia, a high vaccination coverage country

    Primary HPV screening enables earlier diagnosis of cervical lesions compared to cytology, however, its effect on the risk of treatment and adverse obstetric outcomes has not been extensively investigated. We estimated the cumulative lifetime risk (CLR) of cervical cancer and excisional treatment, and change in adverse obstetric outcomes in HPV unvaccinated women and cohorts offered vaccination (>70% coverage in 12-13 years) for the Australian cervical screening program. Two-yearly cytology screening (ages 18-69 years) was compared to 5-yearly primary HPV screening with partial genotyping for HPV16/18 (ages 25-74 years). A dynamic model of HPV transmission, vaccination, cervical screening and treatment for precancerous lesions was coupled with an individual-based simulation of obstetric complications. For cytology screening, the CLR of cervical cancer diagnosis, death and treatment was estimated to be 0.649%, 0.198% and 13.4% without vaccination and 0.182%, 0.056% and 6.8%, in vaccinated women, respectively. For HPV screening, relative reductions of 33% and 22% in cancer risk for unvaccinated and vaccinated women are predicted, respectively, compared to cytology. Without the implementation of vaccination, a 4% increase in treatment risk for HPV versus cytology screening would have been expected, implying a possible increase in pre-term delivery (PTD) and low birth weight (LBW) events of 19 to 35 and 14 to 37, respectively, per 100,000 unvaccinated women. However, in vaccinated women, treatment risk will decrease by 13%, potentially leading to 4 to 41 fewer PTD events and from 2 more to 52 fewer LBW events per 100,000 vaccinated women. In unvaccinated women in cohorts offered vaccination as 12-13 year olds, no change to lifetime treatment risk is expected with HPV screening. In unvaccinated women in cohorts offered vaccination as 12-13 year olds, no change to lifetime treatment risk is expected with HPV screening. HPV screening starting at age 25 in populations with high vaccination coverage, is therefore expected to both improve the benefits (further decrease risk of cervical cancer) and reduce the harms (reduce treatments and possible obstetric complications) associated with cervical cancer screening

    Towards a framework for the evaluation of mobile payments integration

    This paper derives a theoretical framework for consideration of both the technologically driven dimensions of mobile payment solutions, and the associated value proposition for customers. Banks promote traditional payment instruments whose value proposition is the management of risk for both consumers and merchants. These instruments are centralised, costly and lack decision support functionality. The ubiquity of the mobile phone has provided a decentralised platform for managing payment processes in a new way, but the value proposition for customers has yet to be elaborated clearly. This inertia has stalled the design of sustainable revenue models for a mobile payments ecosystem. Merchants and consumers in the meantime are being seduced by the convenience of online and mobile payment solutions. Adopting the purchase and payment process as the unit of analysis, the current mobile payment landscape is reviewed with respect to the creation and consumption of customer value. From this analysis, a framework is derived juxtaposing customer value, related to what is being paid for, with payment integration, related to how payments are being made. The framework provides a theoretical and practical basis for considering the contribution of mobile technologies to the payments industry

    Interface Coupling in Twisted Multilayer Graphene by Resonant Raman Spectroscopy of Layer Breathing Modes.

    Raman spectroscopy is the prime nondestructive characterization tool for graphene and related layered materials. The shear (C) and layer breathing modes (LBMs) are due to relative motions of the planes, either perpendicular or parallel to their normal. This allows one to directly probe the interlayer interactions in multilayer samples. Graphene and other two-dimensional (2d) crystals can be combined to form various hybrids and heterostructures, creating materials on demand with properties determined by the interlayer interaction. This is the case even for a single material, where multilayer stacks with different relative orientations have different optical and electronic properties. In twisted multilayer graphene there is a significant enhancement of the C modes due to resonance with new optically allowed electronic transitions, determined by the relative orientation of the layers. Here we show that this applies also to the LBMs, which can be now directly measured at room temperature. We find that twisting has a small effect on LBMs, quite different from the case of the C modes. This implies that the periodicity mismatch between two twisted layers mostly affects shear interactions. Our work shows that ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy is an ideal tool to uncover the interface coupling of 2d hybrids and heterostructures
