EAM Modulated DBR Laser Array for TWDM-PON Applications
4 Channel DBR laser arrays are fabricated for use in optical line terminals of TWDM-PON systems. These combine 1.4Q InGaAsP material in the DBR with EAMs using the identical active layer design. A tuning range ~10 nm and extinction ratio of >27 dB are measured
Head and Neck Mesenchymal Tumors with Kinase Fusions:A Report of 15 Cases with Emphasis on Wide Anatomic Distribution and Diverse Histologic Appearance
Mesenchymal tumors harboring various kinase fusions were recently recognized as emerging entities mainly in the soft tissues. We herein investigate the clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics of head and neck mesenchymal tumors harboring kinase fusions. The study cohort included 15 patients with a median age of 13 years (ranging from congenital to 63 y). The kinase genes involved in descending order were NTRK1 (n=6), NTRK3 (n=5), BRAF (n=2), and 1 each with MET, and RET. The anatomic locations were broad involving all tissue planes, including skin (n=4), intraosseous (n=4), major salivary glands (n=2), sinonasal tract (n=2), soft tissue of face or neck (n=2), and oral cavity (n=1). The histologic spectrum ranged from benign to high grade, in descending order including tumors resembling malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST)-like, fibrosarcoma (infantile or adult-type), lipofibromatosis-like neural tumor (LPFNT), inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor-like, and a novel phenotype resembling myxoma. Perivascular hyalinization/stromal keloid-like collagen bands and staghorn vasculature were common features in MPNST-like and LPFNT-like tumors. Two tumors (1 each with NTRK1 or BRAF rearrangement) were classified as high grade. By immunohistochemistry, S100 and CD34 positivity was noted in 71% and 60%, frequently in MPNST-like and LPFNT-like phenotypes. Pan-TRK was a sensitive marker for NTRK-translocated tumors but was negative in tumor with other kinase fusions. One patient with a high-grade tumor developed distant metastasis. Molecular testing for various kinase fusions should be considered for S100+/CD34+ spindle cell neoplasms with perivascular hyalinization and staghorn vessels, as pan-TRK positivity is seen only in NTRK fusions.</p
Semi-supervised Learning based on Distributionally Robust Optimization
We propose a novel method for semi-supervised learning (SSL) based on
data-driven distributionally robust optimization (DRO) using optimal transport
metrics. Our proposed method enhances generalization error by using the
unlabeled data to restrict the support of the worst case distribution in our
DRO formulation. We enable the implementation of our DRO formulation by
proposing a stochastic gradient descent algorithm which allows to easily
implement the training procedure. We demonstrate that our Semi-supervised DRO
method is able to improve the generalization error over natural supervised
procedures and state-of-the-art SSL estimators. Finally, we include a
discussion on the large sample behavior of the optimal uncertainty region in
the DRO formulation. Our discussion exposes important aspects such as the role
of dimension reduction in SSL
Diffuse interstitial and multiple cavitary lung lesions due to Talaromyces marneffei infection in a non-HIV patient
AbstractA 57-year-old man presented with unproductive cough and dyspnea for 6 months in Fujian Province, China. His misuse of a large amount of steroids (accumulated dose equivalent to 3530 mg prednisolone) resulted in Talaromyces marneffei infection. Chest computed tomographic scan revealed diffuse interstitial and multiple cavitary lung lesions. Treatment with amphotericin B combined with itraconazole resulted in total recovery, with marked regression of lung lesions
Periodic alternating -junction structures as realization of -Josephson junctions
We consider the properties of a periodic structure consisting of small
alternating 0- and pi- Josephson junctions. We show that depending on the
relation between the lengths of the individual junctions, this system can be
either in the homogeneous or in the phase-modulated state. The modulated phase
appears via a second order phase transition when the mismatch between the
lengths of the individual junctions exceeds the critical value. The screening
length diverges at the transition point. In the modulated state, the
equilibrium phase difference in the structure can take any value from -pi to pi
(phi-junction). The current-phase relation in this structure has very unusual
shape with two maxima. As a consequence, the field dependence of the critical
current in a small structure is very different from the standard Fraunhofer
dependence. The Josephson vortex in a long structure carries partial magnetic
flux, which is determined by the equilibrium phase.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figues, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Supporting Interoperability of Virtual Factories
The manufacturing industry is entering a new era. This emerging era starts with the integration of new ICT technologies and collaboration applications into traditional manufacturing practices and processes, such as manufacturing 2.0. Manufacturing 2.0 has been conceptualised as a system that goes beyond the factory floor, and paradigms of “manufacturing as an ecosystem” have emerged. The virtual factory is one of the important concepts and foundations central to the realization of future manufacturing. In this paper, we take a look into the current research on virtual factories and propose a new approach to improve interoperability through the integration of different proprietary, legacy and existing solutions
Heat to Electricity Conversion by a Graphene Stripe with Heavy Chiral Fermions
A conversion of thermal energy into electricity is considered in the
electrically polarized graphene stripes with zigzag edges where the heavy
chiral fermion (HCF) states are formed. The stripes are characterized by a high
electric conductance Ge and by a significant Seebeck coefficient S. The
electric current in the stripes is induced due to a non-equilibrium thermal
injection of "hot" electrons. This thermoelectric generation process might be
utilized for building of thermoelectric generators with an exceptionally high
figure of merit Z{\delta}T \simeq 100 >> 1 and with an appreciable electric
power densities \sim 1 MW/cm2.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Vortex structure in chiral p-wave superconductors
We investigate the vortex structure in chiral p-wave superconductors by the
Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on a tight-binding model. We calculate the spatial
structure of the pair potential and electronic state around a vortex, including
the anisotropy of the Fermi surface and superconducting gap structure. The
differences of the vortex structure between -wave
and -wave superconductors are clarified in the
vortex lattice state. We also discuss the winding case of the
-wave superconductivity.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Effect of Sun and Planet-Bound Dark Matter on Planet and Satellite Dynamics in the Solar System
We apply our recent results on orbital dynamics around a mass-varying central
body to the phenomenon of accretion of Dark Matter-assumed not
self-annihilating-on the Sun and the major bodies of the solar system due to
its motion throughout the Milky Way halo. We inspect its consequences on the
orbits of the planets and their satellites over timescales of the order of the
age of the solar system. It turns out that a solar Dark Matter accretion rate
of \approx 10^-12 yr^-1, inferred from the upper limit \Delta M/M= 0.02-0.05 on
the Sun's Dark Matter content, assumed somehow accumulated during last 4.5 Gyr,
would have displaced the planets faraway by about 10^-2-10^1 au 4.5 Gyr ago.
Another consequence is that the semimajor axis of the Earth's orbit,
approximately equal to the Astronomical Unit, would undergo a secular increase
of 0.02-0.05 m yr^-1, in agreement with the latest observational determinations
of the Astronomical Unit secular increase of 0.07 +/- 0.02 m yr^-1 and 0.05 m
yr^-1. By assuming that the Sun will continue to accrete Dark Matter in the
next billions year at the same rate as in the past, the orbits of its planets
will shrink by about 10^-1-10^1 au (\approx 0.2-0.5 au for the Earth), with
consequences for their fate, especially of the inner planets. On the other
hand, lunar and planetary ephemerides set upper bounds on the secular variation
of the Sun's gravitational parameter GM which are one one order of magnitude
smaller than 10^-12 yr^-1. Dark Matter accretion on planets has, instead, less
relevant consequences for their satellites. Indeed, 4.5 Gyr ago their orbits
would have been just 10^-2-10^1 km wider than now. (Abridged)Comment: LaTex2e, 17 pages, no figures, 7 tables, 61 references. Small problem

Magnetic-interference patterns in Josephson junctions with d+is symmetry
The magnetic interference pattern and the spontaneous flux in unconventional
Josephson junctions of superconductors with d+is symmetry are calculated for
different reduced junction lengths and the relative factor of the d and s wave
components. This is a time reversal broken symmetry state. We study the
stability of the fractional vortex and antivortex which are spontaneously
formed and examine their evolution as we change the length and the relative
factor of d and s wave components. The asymmetry in the field modulated
diffraction pattern exists for lengths as long as L=10\lambda_J.Comment: 8 pages, 6 eps files, submitted to PR
