Other Oriented Perfectionism in Tennis Coaching
Other oriented perfectionism describes a pre-occupation with the expectation that others will achieve excessively high standards of performance. Projecting unrealistic expectations on to each other in a player-coach dyad may disrupt the working relationship and impact on the athlete’s experience within the sport. This study uses Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis to explore, from the coach’s viewpoint, the effects of other oriented perfectionism in tennis coaching. After conducting semi-structured interviews with high level coaches from the United Kingdom, two superordinate themes emerged. ‘Negative effects of coaches’ other-oriented perfectionism’ and ‘Redefining perfectionism’. The findings of this study assist in highlighting areas for possible intervention as well as identifying avenues for future research
The value of the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) in predicting ischaemia in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy — a prospective study
BACKGROUND: Functional capacity assessment may be
a useful tool to stratify patients according to risk of coronary
artery disease (CAD). The Duke Activity Status Index (DASI)
is a functional assessment based on activities of daily living
and cardiovascular fitness, assessed using a self-administered
questionnaire.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We assessed the relationship
between established clinical risk factors for CAD and the DASI
with results of myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS). The
MPS results used in the analysis were the presence of reversible
ischaemia and the resting left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
A DASI self-administered questionnaire was completed by 117
consecutive participants, and a patient history was taken to
ascertain established risk factors. All participants underwent
a stress test, and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy was performed. Statistical analysis consisted of logistic and linear
regression using a statistical software package.
RESULTS: The DASI was the only factor that correlated significantly
with reversible ischaemia on MPS. None of the previously
established risk factors had a significant association with reversible
ischaemia within the model. Our study found a potential
relationship between the DASI score and the left ventricular ejection
fraction (LVEF) although this was not statistically significant.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study findings suggest that the DASI may
represent a powerful tool for risk stratification prior to investigation
of CAD. A further study with a larger sample size will be
required to investigate the predictive value of the DASI and the
association with LVEF.

Studying the Pulsation of Mira Variables in the Ultraviolet
We present results from an empirical study of the Mg II h & k emission lines
of selected Mira variable stars, using spectra from the International
Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The stars all exhibit similar Mg II behavior during
the course of their pulsation cycles. The Mg II flux always peaks after optical
maximum near pulsation phase 0.2-0.5, although the Mg II flux can vary greatly
from one cycle to the next. The lines are highly blueshifted, with the
magnitude of the blueshift decreasing with phase. The widths of the Mg II lines
are also phase-dependent, decreasing from about 70 km/s to 40 km/s between
phase 0.2 and 0.6. We also study other UV emission lines apparent in the IUE
spectra, most of them Fe II lines. These lines are much narrower and not nearly
as blueshifted as the Mg II lines. They exhibit the same phase-dependent flux

The placebo and nocebo effects on peak minute power during incremental arm crank ergometry

Twelve healthy, non-specifically trained individuals volunteered to take part. A single-blind randomised controlled trial with repeated measures was used to assess for differences in PMP;W, oxygen uptake, heart rate (HR), minute ventilation, respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and subjective reports of local ratings of perceived exertion (LRPE) and central ratings of perceived exertion (CRPE), between three separate, but identical ACE tests. Participants were required to drink either 500 ml of a 'sports performance' drink (placebo), a 'fatigue-inducing' drink (nocebo) or water prior to exercise. The placebo caused a significant increase in PMP;W, and a significant decrease in LRPE compared to the nocebo (p=0.01; p=0.001) and water trials (p=0.01). No significant differences in PMP;W between the nocebo and water were found. However, the nocebo drink did cause a significant increase in LRPE (p=0.01). These results suggest that the time has come to broaden our understanding of the placebo and nocebo effects and their potential to impact sports performance.Peer reviewe
An Analysis of the Shapes of Interstellar Extinction Curves. V. The IR-Through-UV Curve Morphology
We study the IR-through-UV interstellar extinction curves towards 328
Galactic B and late-O stars. We use a new technique which employs stellar
atmosphere models in lieu of unreddened "standard" stars. This technique is
capable of virtually eliminating spectral mismatch errors in the curves. It
also allows a quantitative assessment of the errors and enables a rigorous
testing of the significance of relationships between various curve parameters,
regardless of whether their uncertainties are correlated. Analysis of the
curves gives the following results: (1) In accord with our previous findings,
the central position of the 2175 A extinction bump is mildly variable, its
width is highly variable, and the two variations are unrelated. (2) Strong
correlations are found among some extinction properties within the UV region,
and within the IR region. (3) With the exception of a few curves with extreme
(i.e., large) values of R(V), the UV and IR portions of Galactic extinction
curves are not correlated with each other. (4) The large sightline-to-sightline
variation seen in our sample implies that any average Galactic extinction curve
will always reflect the biases of its parent sample. (5) The use of an average
curve to deredden a spectral energy distribution (SED) will result in
significant errors, and a realistic error budget for the dereddened SED must
include the observed variance of Galactic curves. While the observed large
sightline-to-sightline variations, and the lack of correlation among the
various features of the curves, make it difficult to meaningfully characterize
average extinction properties, they demonstrate that extinction curves respond
sensitively to local conditions. Thus, each curve contains potentially unique

Risk Factors and Incidence of Macular Edema after Cataract Surgery:A Database Study of 81984 Eyes
PurposeTo define the incidence of pseudophakic macular edema (PME) after cataract surgery and to identify contributory risk factors.DesignRetrospective database study of electronic medical records (EMRs).ParticipantsA total of 81984 eyes undergoing cataract surgery between December 2010 and December 2014 from 8 independent United Kingdom clinical sites.MethodsStructured clinical data mandated by the EMR were anonymized and extracted for each eye undergoing cataract surgery including: perioperative visual acuity, copathologic features, simultaneous surgical procedures, and the presence or absence of a specified list of intraoperative complications. Diabetic status with matched Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grading also was mandated by the EMR. Eyes receiving prophylactic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were excluded.Main Outcome MeasureDiagnosis of cystoid macular edema or new-onset macular edema in patients with diabetes, recorded by a healthcare professional within 90 days of surgery.ResultsBaseline incidence of PME in eyes without operative complications, diabetes, or risk factors was 1.17%. Eyes in which PME developed were more likely to be male, older, and to demonstrate risk factors. The relative risk (RR) was increased in eyes with capsule rupture with or without vitreous loss (RR, 2.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.57–4.34), a previous diagnosis of epiretinal membrane (RR, 5.60; 95% CI, 3.45–9.07), uveitis (RR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.50–5.51), retinal vein occlusion (RR, 4.47; 95% CI, 2.56–5.92), or retinal detachment repair (RR, 3.93; 95% CI, 2.60–5.92). High myopia, age-related macular degeneration, or prostaglandin analog use were not shown to increase risk. Eyes with PME on average had poorer postoperative visual acuity, which persisted to the latest time point assessed, up to 24 weeks. Eyes from patients with diabetes, even in the absence of retinopathy, had an increased RR (RR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.36–2.36) of new macular edema after surgery. The risk was higher in the presence of any diabetic retinopathy (DR; RR, 6.23; 95% CI, 5.12–7.58) and rose proportionately with increasing severity of DR.ConclusionsPseudophakic macular edema occurs commonly after phacoemulsification cataract surgery, even in the absence of complications and risk factors. This large retrospective study using structured EMR data quantified the RRs of PME and the risk with increasing ETDRS severity of DR. It highlights the need for prophylactic therapy, especially in those groups of eyes with the highest RRs
Standardisation of a mental skills scale in South Africa and the United Kingdom
The contemporary science of sport and exercise psychology requires the standardisation of mental skills questionnaires to facilitate accurate assessment of and intervention for individuals and groups in various health and sport related contexts. The study presents international research findings regarding the standardisation of a Mental Skills Scale with a sample of university students (N=420) from South Africa (n=211) and the United Kingdom (n=209) respectively. Although further international and national standardisation in both English and other languages is recommended, factor and reliability analyses indicated satisfactory validity and reliability of the current English version of the scale
