Ontological Complexity of Interpolity Orders: The Encounter Between Chosŏn and Tibet in Qing
This article examines the ontological complexity of interpolity orders with a focus on peripheral polities in the Qing order. Existing multiculturalist studies of the Qing order emphasized diverse cultural representations of a single imperial reality, lacking an understanding of multiple realities experienced by peripheral participants. Our analysis reveals the ontological complexity—rather than cultural diversity—of the Qing order, in which multiple ontological agents experienced different lived worlds, from the encounter between Chosŏn Korean envoys and the Tibetan Panchen Lama at Emperor Qianlong’s birthday ceremony. By analyzing the Chosŏn envoy member Pak Chiwŏn’s travelog and Tibetan records, we argue that the Chosŏn envoys with Confucian ontology experienced the Panchen Lama as a subhuman, while the Lama experienced the envoys as ignorant lay beings. Observing this ontological dissonance, Pak Chiwŏn criticized the Qing court’s appropriation of peripheral ontologies and proposed experiencing other ontologies to foreground the presence of the pluriverse in the interpolity order. Beyond the Qing, an ontological approach will help reveal heterogeneous lived worlds of interpolity orders and reconceptualize interpolity order under the condition of ontological complexity
Virtue Rules: The Evolution of the Virtue of State in East Asian International Orders
My dissertation argues the virtue of state is a crucial form of the state’s power and, at the same time, constitutes the international order. The virtue of state confers power upon the state by making it a leader in cultivating collective attunement among the states. Simultaneously, it constitutes an order among the states by making them finely attuned to various social and natural forces, including the other states. It is particularly advantageous for weak states in a hegemonic international order as they can cultivate virtue even without extensive material power resources. The state cultivates its virtue through the dialectic of performance and evaluation among what I call the evaluative community. For the state to be able to cultivate its virtue reflexively, it needs fictional moral personhood. The moral fiction of state appeared separately in Warring States China and in early modern Europe before the two separate traditions merged in 19th-century East Asia. Three major fictions of monadic, sovereign, and liberal state defined the virtues of state in East Asian international orders and provided the ethical motivation for cultivating them.
I substantiate my argument by investigating the virtues of state defined by these three fictions. First, I analyze the virtue of the early modern East Asian states with its evaluative community of the shi and the monadic fiction. They used the rites and literary texts to incorporate the rhythms of imperial politics within the emotional calibration of their rulers and elites. Second, I trace how the international lawyers and East Asian scholars translated the legal conception of sovereignty into a state’s virtue in 19th-century East Asia. They cultivated sovereignty as a virtue to cope with the imperialist expansion. Third, I reconceptualize liberal internationalism as a state fiction, which has enabled the South Korean public and liberal internationalist networks to cultivate the liberal virtue. The theoretical and historical investigations of this dissertation offer an alternative conception of the state’s agency. Instead of the inefficacious pursuit of sovereignty, the virtue of state offers a flexible range of agencies that can suit each state’s material and normative conditions
Biochemical and immunological parameters as indicators of osteoarthritis subjects: role of OH-collagen in auto-antibodies generation
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by inflammation of the knee joint, which is caused by accumulation of cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the extracellular matrix as an early immune response to infection. The articular cartilage destruction is discernible by elevated tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a). In this study, blood samples of knee osteoarthritis patients were analyzed for biochemical and physiological parameters based on the lipid profile, uric acid, total leukocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin percentage (Hb%) and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC). Furthermore, immunological parameters including TNF-a, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and CRP were analyzed. The presence of antibodies against hydroxyl radical modified collagen-II (•OH-collagen-II) was also investigated in arthritis patients using direct binding ELISA. The uric acid and lipid profiles changed extensively. Specifically, increased uric acid levels were associated with OA in both genders, as were enhanced immunological parameters. The TNF-a level also increased in both genders suffering from OA. Finally, auto-antibodies against OH-collagen II antigen were found in the sera of arthritis patients. These results indicated that immunological parameters are better predictors or indexes for diagnosis of OA than biochemical parameters
Recent trends of biotechnological production of polyhydroxyalkanoates from C1 carbon sources
Growing concerns over the use of limited fossil fuels and their negative impacts on the ecological niches have facilitated the exploration of alternative routes. The use of conventional plastic material also negatively impacts the environment. One such green alternative is polyhydroxyalkanoates, which are biodegradable, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly. Recently, researchers have focused on the utilization of waste gases particularly those belonging to C1 sources derived directly from industries and anthropogenic activities, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and methanol as the substrate for polyhydroxyalkanoates production. Consequently, several microorganisms have been exploited to utilize waste gases for their growth and biopolymer accumulation. Methylotrophs such as Methylobacterium organophilum produced highest amount of PHA up to 88% using CH4 as the sole carbon source and 52–56% with CH3OH. On the other hand Cupriavidus necator, produced 71–81% of PHA by utilizing CO and CO2 as a substrate. The present review shows the potential of waste gas valorization as a promising solution for the sustainable production of polyhydroxyalkanoates. Key bottlenecks towards the usage of gaseous substrates obstructing their realization on a large scale and the possible technological solutions were also highlighted. Several strategies for PHA production using C1 gases through fermentation and metabolic engineering approaches are discussed. Microbes such as autotrophs, acetogens, and methanotrophs can produce PHA from CO2, CO, and CH4. Therefore, this article presents a vision of C1 gas into bioplastics are prospective strategies with promising potential application, and aspects related to the sustainability of the system
Prospective evaluation of clinical symptoms of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in adult patients with acute leukemia: A preliminary study
Objective The objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical features of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIOM) in adult patients with acute leukemia and the aggravating factors for such symptoms. Subjects Thirty-seven prospective patients aged >= 19 years with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy were enrolled. Oral and clinical investigations were performed at baseline and on Day 14 after starting chemotherapy. The presence and severity of cancer-induced oral mucositis were demonstrated using the World Health Organization (WHO) scoring system. Results On Day 14, we found that oral mucositis had developed in eight patients (21.6%). Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients was a predictor of increased WHO scores (beta = 1.937, p < .001). Regarding oral sites, ventral tongue (beta = 1.670), soft palate (beta = 1.242), and buccal mucosa (beta = 0.593) were predictors for increased scores. In addition, the increase in WHO scores was positively correlated with the number of oral lesions (r = .521), the difficulty in eating (r = .250), and the overall oral health (r = .534; all p < .05). Conclusion The main factors affecting the severity of CIOM symptoms were the treatment with HSCT and the location of oral lesions. The incidence of CIOM and WHO scores were not significantly different between the subgroups of disease. Our findings will help clinicians investigate the oral findings after chemotherapy in adult patients with acute leukemia.Y
Gender-dependent difference in serum paraoxonase 1 levels of Hanwoo, Korean native cattle, and a positive association with meat quality
Objective Paraoxonase 1 (PON1), a calcium-dependent serum enzyme, has been shown to be involved in lipid metabolism. In this study, we examined the putative correlation of the serum PON1 level of Hanwoo, Korean native cattle, with gender and meat quality grade. Methods PON1 levels were estimated by determining the arylesterase and paraoxonase activities (AE and PO, respectively) in serum samples from Hanwoo individuals (n = 56). Serum PON1 levels were analyzed in different gender groups (female [n = 21], castrated male [n = 17], and male [n = 18]), and meat quality grades (≥1 [n = 23], 2 [n = 21], and 3 [n = 12]). Results Serum PON1 levels were similar in female (AE = 120±55 U/mL, PO = 84±43 mU/mL) and castrated male (123±44 U/mL, PO = 89±30 mU/mL), while male showed a significantly lower level (AE = 65±43 U/mL, PO = 44±34 mU/mL). Furthermore, analysis of serum PON1 levels in three different grades of meat quality showed similar levels in the grades ≥1 (AE = 118±49 U/mL, PO = 84±37 mU/mL) and 2 (AE = 116±54 U/mL, PO = 82±43 mU/mL), while the level was significantly lower in the grade 3 (AE = 58±35 U/mL, PO = 39±27 mU/mL) of lower meat quality. Conclusion We discovered the gender-dependent differences in serum PON1 levels of Hanwoo and a positive association of the serum PON1 level with meat quality. Results in this study suggest that PON1 would be a useful serum marker for preliminary screening of Hanwoo individuals with high-quality meat and applicable for genetic improvement
Effect of Cblin and celastrol on muscle atrophy
Two novel reagents, N-myristoylated Cbl-b inhibitory peptide (C14-Cblin) and celastrol, a quinone methide triterpene, are reported to be effective in preventing myotube atrophy. The combined effects of C14-Cblin and celastrol on rat L6 myotubes atrophy induced by 3D-clinorotation, a simulated microgravity model, was investigated in the present study. We first examined their effects on expression in atrogenes. Increase in MAFbx1/atrogin-1 and MuRF-1 by 3D-clinorotation was significantly suppressed by treatment with C14-Cblin or celastrol, but there was no additive effect of simultaneous treatment. However, celastrol significantly suppressed the upregulation of Cbl-b and HSP70 by 3D-clinorotation. Whereas 3D-clinorotation decreased the protein level of IRS-1 in L6 myotubes, C14-Cblin and celastrol inhibited the degradation of IRS-1. C14-Cblin and celastrol promoted the phosphorylation of FOXO3a even in microgravity condition. Simultaneous administration of C14-Cblin and celastrol had shown little additive effect in reversing the impairment of IGF-1 signaling by 3D-clinorotation. While 3D-clinorotation-induced marked oxidative stress in L6 myotubes, celastrol suppressed 3D-clinorotation-induced ROS production. Finally, the C14-Cblin and celastrol-treated groups were inhibited decrease in L6 myotube diameter and increased the protein content of slow-twitch MyHC cultured under 3D-clinorotation. The simultaneous treatment of C14-Cblin and celastrol additively prevented 3D-clinorotation-induced myotube atrophy than single treatment
