Ride quality evaluation 1: Questionnaire studies of airline passenger comfort
As part of a larger effort to assess passenger comfort in aircraft, two questionnaires were administered: one to ground-based respondents; the other to passengers in flight. Respondents indicated the importance of various factors influencing their satisfaction with a trip, the perceived importance of various physical factors in determining their level of comfort, and the ease of time spent performing activities in flight. The in-flight sample also provided a rating of their level of comfort and of their willingness to fly again. Comfort ratings were examined in relation to (1) type of respondent, (2) type of aircraft, (3) characteristics of the passengers, (4) ease of performing activities, and (5) willingness to fly again
Minimum noise impact aircraft trajectories
Numerical optimization is used to compute the optimum flight paths, based upon a parametric form that implicitly includes some of the problem restrictions. The other constraints are formulated as penalties in the cost function. Various aircraft on multiple trajectores (landing and takeoff) can be considered. The modular design employed allows for the substitution of alternate models of the population distribution, aircraft noise, flight paths, and annoyance, or for the addition of other features (e.g., fuel consumption) in the cost function. A reduction in the required amount of searching over local minima was achieved through use of the presence of statistical lateral dispersion in the flight paths
Passenger ride quality determined from commercial airline flights
The University of Virginia ride-quality research program is reviewed. Data from two flight programs, involving seven types of aircraft, are considered in detail. An apparatus for measuring physical variations in the flight environment and recording the subjective reactions of test subjects is described. Models are presented for predicting the comfort response of test subjects from the physical data, and predicting the overall comfort reaction of test subjects from their moment by moment responses. The correspondence of mean passenger comfort judgments and test subject response is shown. Finally, the models of comfort response based on data from the 5-point and 7-point comfort scales are shown to correspond
Application of ride quality technology to predict ride satisfaction for commuter-type aircraft
A method was developed to predict passenger satisfaction with the ride environment of a transportation vehicle. This method, a general approach, was applied to a commuter-type aircraft for illustrative purposes. The effect of terrain, altitude and seat location were examined. The method predicts the variation in passengers satisfied for any set of flight conditions. In addition several noncommuter aircraft were analyzed for comparison and other uses of the model described. The method has advantages for design, evaluation, and operating decisions
Destroying black holes with test bodies
If a black hole can accrete a body whose spin or charge would send the black
hole parameters over the extremal limit, then a naked singularity would
presumably form, in violation of the cosmic censorship conjecture. We review
some previous results on testing cosmic censorship in this way using the test
body approximation, focusing mostly on the case of neutral black holes. Under
certain conditions a black hole can indeed be over-spun or over-charged in this
approximation, hence radiative and self-force effects must be taken into

A rapidly expanding Bose-Einstein condensate: an expanding universe in the lab
We study the dynamics of a supersonically expanding ring-shaped Bose-Einstein
condensate both experimentally and theoretically. The expansion redshifts
long-wavelength excitations, as in an expanding universe. After expansion,
energy in the radial mode leads to the production of bulk topological
excitations -- solitons and vortices -- driving the production of a large
number of azimuthal phonons and, at late times, causing stochastic persistent
currents. These complex nonlinear dynamics, fueled by the energy stored
coherently in one mode, are reminiscent of a type of "preheating" that may have
taken place at the end of inflation.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Complete controllability of finite-level quantum systems
Complete controllability is a fundamental issue in the field of control of
quantum systems, not least because of its implications for dynamical
realizability of the kinematical bounds on the optimization of observables. In
this paper we investigate the question of complete controllability for
finite-level quantum systems subject to a single control field, for which the
interaction is of dipole form. Sufficient criteria for complete controllability
of a wide range of finite-level quantum systems are established and the
question of limits of complete controllability is addressed. Finally, the
results are applied to give a classification of complete controllability for

Deployable antenna phase A study
Applications for large deployable antennas were re-examined, flight demonstration objectives were defined, the flight article (antenna) was preliminarily designed, and the flight program and ground development program, including the support equipment, were defined for a proposed space transportation system flight experiment to demonstrate a large (50 to 200 meter) deployable antenna system. Tasks described include: (1) performance requirements analysis; (2) system design and definition; (3) orbital operations analysis; and (4) programmatic analysis
Modelling Planck-scale Lorentz violation via analogue models
Astrophysical tests of Planck-suppressed Lorentz violations had been
extensively studied in recent years and very stringent constraints have been
obtained within the framework of effective field theory. There are however
still some unresolved theoretical issues, in particular regarding the so called
"naturalness problem" - which arises when postulating that Planck-suppressed
Lorentz violations arise only from operators with mass dimension greater than
four in the Lagrangian. In the work presented here we shall try to address this
problem by looking at a condensed-matter analogue of the Lorentz violations
considered in quantum gravity phenomenology. Specifically, we investigate the
class of two-component BECs subject to laser-induced transitions between the
two components, and we show that this model is an example for Lorentz
invariance violation due to ultraviolet physics. We shall show that such a
model can be considered to be an explicit example high-energy Lorentz

Computing the spectrum of black hole radiation in the presence of high frequency dispersion: an analytical approach
We present a method for computing the spectrum of black hole radiation of a
scalar field satisfying a wave equation with high frequency dispersion. The
method involves a combination of Laplace transform and WKB techniques for
finding approximate solutions to ordinary differential equations. The modified
wave equation is obtained by adding a higher order derivative term suppressed
by powers of a fundamental momentum scale to the ordinary wave equation.
Depending on the sign of this new term, high frequency modes propagate either
superluminally or subluminally. We show that the resulting spectrum of created
particles is thermal at the Hawking temperature, and further that the out-state
is a thermal state at the Hawking temperature, to leading order in , for
