Neo-Hookean fiber composites undergoing finite out-of-plane shear deformations
The response of a neo-Hookean fiber composite undergoing finite out-of-plane
shear deformation is examined. To this end an explicit close form solution for
the out-of-plane shear response of a cylindrical composite element is
introduced. We find that the overall response of the cylindrical composite
element can be characterized by a fictitious homogeneous neo-Hookean material.
Accordingly, this macroscopic response is identical to the response of a
composite cylinder assemblage. The expression for the effective shear modulus
of the composite cylinder assemblage is identical to the corresponding
expression in the limit of small deformation elasticity, and hence also to the
expression for the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds on the out-of-plane shear modulus
Supersymmetric version of a Gaussian irrotational compressible fluid flow
The Lie point symmetries and corresponding invariant solutions are obtained
for a Gaussian, irrotational, compressible fluid flow. A supersymmetric
extension of this model is then formulated through the use of a superspace and
superfield formalism. The Lie superalgebra of this extended model is determined
and a classification of its subalgebras is performed. The method of symmetry
reduction is systematically applied in order to derive special classes of
invariant solutions of the supersymmetric model. Several new types of
algebraic, hyperbolic, multi-solitonic and doubly periodic solutions are
obtained in explicit form.Comment: Expanded introduction and added new section on classical Gaussian
fluid flow. Included several additional reference
Supersymmetric version of a hydrodynamic system in Riemann invariants and its solutions
In this paper, a supersymmetric extension of a system of hydrodynamic type
equations involving Riemann invariants is formulated in terms of a superspace
and superfield formalism. The symmetry properties of both the classical and
supersymmetric versions of this hydrodynamical model are analyzed through the
use of group-theoretical methods applied to partial differential equations
involving both bosonic and fermionic variables. More specifically, we compute
the Lie superalgebras of both models and perform classifications of their
respective subalgebras. A systematic use of the subalgebra structures allow us
to construct several classes of invariant solutions, including travelling
waves, centered waves and solutions involving monomials, exponentials and
radicals.Comment: 30 page
Analytical and numerical analyses of the micromechanics of soft fibrous connective tissues
State of the art research and treatment of biological tissues require
accurate and efficient methods for describing their mechanical properties.
Indeed, micromechanics motivated approaches provide a systematic method for
elevating relevant data from the microscopic level to the macroscopic one. In
this work the mechanical responses of hyperelastic tissues with one and two
families of collagen fibers are analyzed by application of a new variational
estimate accounting for their histology and the behaviors of their
constituents. The resulting, close form expressions, are used to determine the
overall response of the wall of a healthy human coronary artery. To demonstrate
the accuracy of the proposed method these predictions are compared with
corresponding 3-D finite element simulations of a periodic unit cell of the
tissue with two families of fibers. Throughout, the analytical predictions for
the highly nonlinear and anisotropic tissue are in agreement with the numerical
simulations

A Functional Proteomic Method for Biomarker Discovery
The sequencing of the human genome holds out the hope for personalized medicine, but it is clear that analysis of DNA or RNA content alone is not sufficient to understand most disease processes. Proteomic strategies that allow unbiased identification of proteins and their post-transcriptional and -translation modifications are an essential complement to genomic strategies. However, the enormity of the proteome and limitations in proteomic methods make it difficult to determine the targets that are particularly relevant to human disease. Methods are therefore needed that allow rational identification of targets based on function and relevance to disease. Screening methodologies such as phage display, SELEX, and small-molecule combinatorial chemistry have been widely used to discover specific ligands for cells or tissues of interest, such as tumors. Those ligands can be used in turn as affinity probes to identify their cognate molecular targets when they are not known in advance. Here we report an easy, robust and generally applicable approach in which phage particles bearing cell- or tissue-specific peptides serve directly as the affinity probes for their molecular targets. For proof of principle, the method successfully identified molecular binding partners, three of them novel, for 15 peptides specific for pancreatic cancer
