    Korean Transnational Students’ School Adjustment: An Ecological Perspective

    This research explored Korean early study abroad students’ school adjustment in the U.S., as well as how their microsystems (family, peer, school) affect their experiences. To understand their experience, we posed two research questions: 1) What are Korean early study abroad students’ experience like in adjusting to American middle schools? and 2) How do these students’ microsystems (family, peer, and school) affect their experiences in the process of adjustment? Four Korean early study abroad students participated in a collective case study. Each student was interviewed three times and observed in both their content area and ESL classes. All students described tremendous challenges in adjusting to their new school in the U.S. Specifically, their challenges were pertaining to different aspects of learning experiences as well as school belonging. While their limited English proficiency was a primary factor in these challenges, a lack of support from their peers, parents, teachers and school also seemed to affect their school adjustment. Moreover, findings indicated disconnections among their microsystems, contributing to a lack of support in their school adjustment

    Impact of Features and Display Ads on the Demand for Orange Juice: An Extension of the Rotterdam Demand Model

    Florida’s citrus industry has a long history of using generic advertising as a primary instrument for shifting demand for various forms of citrus juices. Consumption behavior and consumer responses to these advertising are expected to substantially differ with each type of citrus juice These juices are classified into several groups defined as: frozen concentrated orange juice (FCOJ); refrigerated ready to- service not form concentrate (NFC); and refrigerated ready-to-service from concentrated orange juice (RECON). RECON comes from the fact that bulk concentrate has to be reconstituted into the ready-to-service form. While these juices may be substitutable, they fundamentally differ in both form and perception about the product attributes. Furthermore, the expectation is that demand for each juice type differs geographically because of the climate, economics, and demographics. Geographically, four U.S. regions are defined to be Northeast, West, South and North Central. Given the cost and marketing strategies needed, it is paramount that the industry understand any differences in demand across product forms and geographical market. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the demand and then measure the impacts of feature and display advertisements on the demand orange juice by form and market location. Feature and display ads are common methods for promoting orange juice as it is for many commodities. Specifically for the citrus industry, feature ads include best-food-day ads, store flyers, circulars, and other printed materials. Display ads include the display of the products in secondary locations, cut cases placed next to regular shelf location, and those displays in primary locations which give visual interest of the product in the store. With each media, the primary question is how much impact do these programs have on the overall demand for orange juice? Turning to established consumer demand models, these impacts are measured in this paper. A system of orange juice demand equations are estimated using the absolute price version of the Rotterdam model by Barten. The exact model is not specified at this point. The demand model is estimated with restrictions Engel aggregation, linear homogeneity,and symmetric assumptons imposed. Imposing advertising variables in a demand system, only adding up restriction involves the impact of advertising must be offset by demand decreases for other products to satisfy the budget condition as a result of demand increase for some products. Demand model is transposed to the differentiated terms based on the average values of the expenditures, prices, and quantities to simulate the impact of prices and advertising change on demand.     Korean and American Teachers’ Praising Styles and Teaching Practices

    Praising is a crucial part of teaching performance that greatly impacts student performance and self-esteem. South Korean teachers are traditionally known to possess authoritarian attributes, whereas U.S. teachers have contradictory beliefs in terms of why and how to use praise. We used Q methodology among 16 American and 22 Korean teachers to understand their subjective views on their teaching and praising practices, intentions and orientations of praising in teaching. Five praising types were obtained. Most American teachers, dubbed as Proud Hedonistic Praisers, showed strong confidence in their teaching and a higher preference of praising. In contrast, most Korean teachers had diverse praising intentions and orientations, dubbed as Humanistic (avoid praising), Authoritarian Behaviorist (use of criticism for controlling students’ behaviors and learning), Hedonistic Behaviorist (praise for maintaining good relations with students), or Student-centered Hedonistic Praisers (praise to help students)

    Discomfort luminance level of head-mounted displays depending on the adapting luminance

    The Images in an immersive head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual reality provide the sole source for visual adaptation. Thus, significant, near-instantaneous increases in luminance while viewing an HMD can result in visual discomfort. Therefore, the current study investigated the luminance change necessary to induce this discomfort. Based on the psychophysical experiment data collected from 10 subjects, a prediction model was derived using four complex images and one neutral image, with four to six levels of average scene luminance. Result showed that maximum area luminance has a significant correlation with the discomfort luminance level than average, median, or maximum pixel luminance. According to the prediction model, the discomfort luminance level of a head-mounted display was represented as a positive linear function in log(10) units using the previous adaptation luminance when luminance is calculated as maximum area luminance

    Residential Segregation and Social Integration: Do Blacks and Whites Differ?

    While it is well known that racial residential segregation affects social behaviors and various outcomes of individuals, research about the relationship between residential segregation and social integration is limited. We examine how residential segregation is associated with three types of social integration: formal, informal, and advisory integration, and whether the associations differ for Blacks and Whites using data from the Americans’ Changing Lives survey. Our results show that residential segregation is negatively associated with advisory integration for both Blacks and Whites. It also predicts lower levels of formal integration for Blacks, but not for Whites. We did not find significant relationships between residential segregation and informal integration. Interestingly, the sizable associations between residential segregation and formal and advisory integration remain significant even after controlling for the prevalence of Blacks and poverty in counties. It suggests that the racial distribution is a substantial determinant of social relationships especially for Blacks

The aim of this study was to explore subgroups among Korean suicide attempters in terms of details of the suicide attempt. Methods: We analyzed a sample of 900 suicide attempters who were treated in the emergency room due to the suicide attempt. Rating variables concerned demographic characteristics, clinical information, and details of the suicide attempt including suicidal intent and lethality assessed by Suicide Intent Scale (SIS) and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). A cluster analysis was performed using the Ward method. Results: Two subgroups were identified. A majority of our sample fell into a subgroup characterized by less planning, methods of low lethality and ambivalence towards death (unplanned). The other subgroup made more severe and well-planned attempt, using high lethal methods and taking more precautions to avoid being interrupted (planned). We also examined differences in demographic and clinical variables between two subgroups: the unplanned subgroup was predominantly females and more likely to be under psychiatric treatment while the planned subgroup was associated with more males, older age, and physical illness. Conclusions: Cluster analysis extracted two distinct subgroups of Korean suicide attempters. The understanding that a significant portion of suicide attempts in South Korea occur impulsively calls for the development of new prevention strategies tailored to different profiles of subgroups.Introduction 1 Methods 5 Results 10 Discussion 16 References 21 Abstract in Korean 42Maste
